Sunday Salon: Bundle of Trouble by Diana Orgain

A woman who just gave birth doesn't sound like you typical murder mystery sleuth, but it does make for interesting drama and hilarious antic in "Bundle of Trouble, A Maternal Instincts Mystery."

“A mother’s work is never done,” - Anonymous

For new mom Kate Connelly these words right true as she brings her newborn home, tries to help her husband find his brother; contemplates changing careers; and solves not one, but three murders.

Life was simple for Kate and her husband before their daughter was born. But as she went into labor, they received word that a decomposed body pulled from the bay could be her brother-in-law.

After the birth of Laurie, Kate learns the body from the bay wasn’t her brother-in-law, but the husband of a friend from high school.

Following questions by a private investigator concerning her brother-in-law and the murder victim, Kate decides to do some snooping on her own. In between breastfeeding, worrying about going back to work and trying to sleep, Kate begins asking questions.

Soon a second body turns up, circumstances brings Kate closer to the P.I. and the murder investigation gets as messy as Laurie’s diapers.

With a never ending to-do list and worrying about leaving the baby to return to work, Kate decides to launch her own P.I. business. Oh, and a third body is found adding more twists to the plot.

The roller coaster ride of being a first-time parent is wittingly entwined in the mayhem of murder and mystery by author Diana Orgain. She keeps you guessing who the murderer is while causing you to laugh at the daily tasks of dealing with a newborn.

"Bundle of Trouble" is a laugh out loud mystery you can’t put down.

Kate Connelly is a character mothers can identify with, while those who aren’t will enjoy her introduction to the wacky world of motherhood. Diana Orgain has not only given the readers an insight into the highs and lows of having a newborn, but given us characters that we’ll want to return to time and time again.

“Please mother can we read what’s new on Kate’s to-do list soon?” Can’t wait to see what Kate stumbles into next between diaper changes and 3 a.m. feedings.

  2. Interesting! I'd never have thought of something like this (I felt pretty housebound after having babies), but it's a great idea.

  3. Nice review, Mason. Diana always cracks me up when she Tweets about her toddler. I'm looking forward to reading this one -- a murder mystery combined with the wit and wisdom of motherhoood. Can't beat that!

  4. Jemi, it is a fun book and a little surprise at the end. Didn't expect it to turn out as it did. :)

Elizabeth, I think a new mother (or a mother) will relate to some of the mishaps, while those without children will also get an inside look at the ups and downs of motherhood, while enjoying a mystery.

Cleo, I wasn't sure how entertaining it would be - a new mother being a sleuth - but Diana did a great job showing both sides of the coin and made it really good cozy mystery.

  5. Mason - Thanks for sharing this book. It sounds like a fascinating twist on the "cozy," and I like humor in mysteries when it's done well. I'll look for it ....

In fact, some aspects of this remind me a bit of Melanie Travis, the sleuth of Laurien Berenson's series. I really enjoyed those, so I'll bet I'll enjoy this one.

  6. Margot, I think you'll enjoy it. It does have twist and turns. I'll have to check on the Laurien Berenson's series. Sounds interesting.
