Happy New Year!

Here we are at the end of another year. I'm not sure where the time goes anymore. We blink twice and another year has gone by.

This year, like years past, has been filled with loss, sorrow, and heartache. But it's also been filled with love, happiness, and hope. That's what we should focus on.

I wish all of you a safe and happy celebration as you ring in the New Year. May 2017 bring much happiness, love, good health, and good fortune to each of you!

I have a post scheduled for Monday (Jan. 2) and then I'll be back online Tuesday (Jan. 3). Looking forward to visiting with everyone. Until then I leave you with this thought ... put a note on your mirror so you'll see it first thing every morning that says, "Begin the day with a smile." Then remember to share that smile throughout the day with friends and strangers. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how many time it will be returned.

May the start of the New Year tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 1) bring peace, love, and happiness to each of you my friends!!

Happy New Year!!!

Let me tell you about a DVD collection that would be a great addition to your home entertainment selection or make a wonderful gift. WHEN CALLS THE HEAT: Complete Season 3 is a 10 DVD Collectors Edition that will entertain the entire family.

Inspired by the bestselling series by author Janette Oke, WHEN CALLS THE HEART airs on the Hallmark Channel. The series stars Erin Krakow, Daniel Lissing, Jack Wagner, and Lori Loughlin. Season 3 even has a guest appearance by Brooke Shields.

Season 3 continues to follow the lives of teacher Elizabeth Thatcher (Krakow) from the big city and Mountie Jack (Lissing) as their relationship develops in the small frontier town of Hope Valley. The story features the couple’s ups and downs as they interact with the residents of the town (good and bad) and face the elements of the land.

The collection contains 10 discs with all the season 3 episodes, along with bonus features, a slideshow, Hearties Family Reunion, and a Hearties Trivia Game.

This is a series the entire family can watch together as it deals with love and understanding for one’s fellow man, struggles faced in day-to-day living (including modern times), faith, commitment to those you love, and appreciating the beauty of nature. Each episode deals with lessons and family values without being overly preachy.

Fixer-Upper Mystery Series Goes Hollywood

Are you wondering what you’re going to watch on TV now that Christmas is over?

Well, you’re in luck. A new mystery franchise based off of Berkley author Kate Carlisle’s Fixer-Upper Mystery series will soon be released by the Hallmark Channel.

The Hallmark Channel will air the first of the movie series, Framed for Murder, on Jan. 15th starring singer-songwriter, Jewel as the lead. Based off of the second book in Kate’s Fixer-Upper Mystery series, THIS OLD HOMICIDE (Berkley Trade Mass Market Original; January 27, 2015; $7.99), the movie will follow the story of contractor and part-time sleuth Shannon Hughes (Jewel) as she stumbles across clues in her renovations that help her to get to the bottom of the suspicious death of a neighbor.

This past November Berkley also released the latest Fixer-Upper Mystery, DECK THE HALLWAYS (Berkley Mass Market Original; November 1, 2016; $7.99), and has acquired the world English rights for two more books in the series.

Jewel will star in the new mystery franchise on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries network. In the small resort town of Lighthouse Cove, everyone knows that the best man for the job is a woman.  And that woman is Shannon Hughes (Jewel), owner of Hughes Restoration and an expert in Victorian home restoration.  Through her work, she stumbles across clues hidden in the old homes, uncovering past secrets and becoming an unlikely sleuth to crack unsolved mysteries.

Author Kate Carlisle
In “Framed for Murder: A Fixer-Upper Mystery,” the premiere movie in the franchise, Shannon Hughes, gets a partner in crime-solving when her new client offers to help hammer out the details of her friend and neighbor’s untimely death.  The new original movie stars Jewel (“Ride with the Devil,” “Ring of Fire”) and Colin Ferguson (“Eureka”), and premieres Sunday, January 15, (9 p.m. ET/PT) on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

When home renovator extraordinaire Shannon Hughes (Jewel) suspects foul play in the death of her good friend and neighbor, yet is rebuffed by the police who have declared it “accidental,” she sets out to build a case for murder, with the help of her new client, famous crime reporter and author Macintyre “Mac” Sullivan (Ferguson).  Together, they set out to deconstruct what Shannon believes to be a homicide, and nail the perpetrator, but not before further lives are endangered, lifelong friends are suspected, and a bejeweled necklace valued at $10 million is discovered.

Happy Holidays To All!

A gift bag I bought this year
Can you believe it’s already Christmas Eve? I know some places it’s already Christmas. Wow!

Where did the time go? It seems like it was only yesterday that it was spring. Then I blinked and summer was a memory and here we are celebrating the holidays. For as long as I can remember I’ve heard that time flies when you get older. Boy is that ever true!

Today for many will be filled with a lot of last minute shopping, spending time with family and friends, enjoying tasty dishes, and the opening of presents. Whatever your day holds – maybe just some quiet time by yourself – I hope it’s a safe and joyous time.

I am thankful every day for the wonderful friendship and fellowship I’ve found through this blog. I can’t express how much I’ve learned and grown from knowing each of you. Thank you!

Happy Holidays!
I’m off today to spend time with family so I’m afraid I won’t make it by your sites to wish you a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays. But please know I wish each of you a very Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart. For those celebrating Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, I send wishes of good well, love, and peace. For my Canadian friends, I wish you a joyous Boxing Day on Monday.

I plan to be offline (but still checking emails) until Jan. 2nd or 3rd even though I may have a few posts going up between now and then. I hope y’all will return in the New Year to celebrate new books, fun authors, and life in general with me here at Thoughts in Progress.

A sleeping Traveler waiting on Santa
I want to leave you now with a video I found on YouTube featuring some beautiful Christmas music. I know there's Christmas music at the top of the blog but this video features three hours of some of what I consider classic Christmas music. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. If you click on the YouTube logo and go to that link and then click on 'show more' it will list the songs and singers. I also found a video that features 12 hours of Christmas music. Here’s the link to that one in case you’d like to listen to something else. In addition, I’m sharing a photo of my cat, Traveler, who was sleeping soundly this week reminding me of Clement Clarke Moore’s The Night Before Christmas story.

Wishing you joy, love, peace, prosperity, happiness, and friendship.

Seasons Within {+ Giveaway}

With Christmas only a few hours away I’m excited to be participating in the SEASONS WITHIN by Lele Iturrioz Blitz with Xpresso Book Tours.

As part of the blitz I have a prepared interview with Lele and she is offering an awesome blitz-wide giveaway. The giveaway (open to residents of the U.S. and Canada) is for a signed copy of SEASONS WITHIN plus a character’s handmade necklace. Please see the end of the post for more details on the giveaway.

◊Seasons Within
◊by Lele Iturrioz
◊Acorn Publishing
◊Publication date: December 15th, 2016
◊Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult

Most teenage girls know their name, where they came from, who they are. Not G, a beautiful redhead with unusual markings on her wrist. She gets her name from a silver locket she keeps around her neck, unaware the engraved letter “G” on its front holds the secret to her past.
G’s life before the age of six has been a mystery to her. Each night for the last twelve years she’s been haunted by the same nightmare—a war. Horrendous beasts, warriors able to wield the four elements, and a boy who saves her by means of blue fire taunt her memory. But on her eighteenth birthday, G’s life begins to unravel. When she meets her new Chemistry professor, a man with an uncanny resemblance to the boy who saves her, she knows there must be more to her dreams.
It’s dangerous not knowing who you are, what you’re capable of, and what future awaits you. Especially when the darkness that slaughtered your entire world, just found you.

SEASONS WITHIN is available at these sites: Goodreads and Amazon.

Please join me in giving Lele a warm welcome as she graciously answers some questions. Welcome, Lele.

How did you come up with the idea?
Lele:
One day I was walking around with my headphones while listening to Breath of Life by Florence and the Machine (Awesome song!). The street was covered with hundreds of leaves and when the wind came, it made all the leaves fly. In my perspective and with the headphones it looked as if they were dancing, so I lifted my arms and danced among the flying leaves. Besides the fact that I looked like a crazy person swinging my arms to the sky, for a moment I felt like I was the one moving them.

And that’s how G, my main character was born, a girl who had the power to move Nature in a world that was possible.

How did you come up with the title?

Lele:
The title is based on two things, the first one is that G has the power to wield all elements, she has the four seasons within herself and the second one is that the seasons represent the year she has before her Resurgence.

How old are your characters?

Lele:
G turns 18 at the beginning of the book. The rest are between 15 to 24 years old.

SKUGGO
Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Lele:
G is an extraordinary girl hidden in plain sight. She is a teenage girl who just learned her real name and that she comes from a place where people can wield one of the four elements making her the only one who can wield, destroy or create all four of them.

G is supposed to learn her gifts in order to defeat a man that almost destroyed her world.

She’s not afraid of dying as much as she’s afraid of letting down the people she loves, her new family. She’s intrigued by a man she shouldn’t be talking to and she’s in love with a man who sees her as his job... but most of all, G is a curious teenager who wants to find herself.

Describe your main characters in one word.

Lele:
G – curious                                 Edan – alpha
Priyam – smart-ass                 Veter – childish
Shui – motherly                         Willow – bitchy
Donovan – flirt                          Hunter – lost
Synthia – vapid                         the twins, Pink and Floyd – insane.

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning?

Lele:
Every name has a meaning or a reason why. For example, willow is the name of a tree and my character Willow is the one who can wield plants.
Except for Priyam, that name came straight out of one of my best friends. (Thanks, Priy!)

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

Lele:
Yes, it is going to be a five-book series. The first book is Seasons Within, this is the book where G finds out what she’s capable of and who she’s destined to become, followed by four books about the year G needs to survive before her Resurgence.

Tell us about the cover/s and how it/they came about.

Lele:
The cover for Seasons Within has all the seasons on the First Tree. G is merged with the First Tree as she becomes a part of all the seasons.

Who designed your book cover/s?

Lele:
The illustration was made by a talented artist named Joanna Haber (you can find her on Etsy or Facebook on ABitofWhimsyArt).

And the design was made by an amazing designer named Ibet Sakoda (you can find her on inspiralia.com.mx)

Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers will grasp?

Lele:
Nature can survive without humans but humans can’t survive without nature. We need to take better care of the only planet we have.

When did you decide to become a writer?

Lele:
I was 13 years old when my parents split. That age is already difficult by itself so adding the divorce of my parents made it almost impossible. Consequently, I took books as an escape, instead of getting sad over what was happening I read stories about magic and friends and brave acts. Over the years, all those stories made it easier for me to understand and go through everything, so when I grew up I decided to write books so maybe one day I could return the favor and help a 13-year-old girl (or anyone) who might need a little bit of magic to get by.

Why do you write?

Lele:
It was Victor Hugo who said, “A writer is a world trapped in a person.” And I truly believe it. If I don’t write what’s going on in my head I start going crazy and can’t stop thinking about it until is on paper. Also, because I really love it.

Lele, thanks for joining us today and sharing this insight into your writing. The book cover is amazing.

Here’s an excerpt from IGNITE (Midnight Fire Book One) for your reading pleasure:

Tristan finished reading his lines. “Hey, Juliet, it’s your turn.” He smirked.
“Oh, right.” She looked down at her book. “‘O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though Romeo.'” She tried to copy his apathetic style of reading and was secretly overjoyed when he laughed at her.
“I get it, I sounded like an idiot.” She just continued giving him the same silent treatment he had given her. “Okay, here’s the truth, Kira. We can’t talk here, and we shouldn’t even be talking now, or maybe ever.”
“You told me that already.” She stopped reading.
“Yet, you seem to have trouble understanding it. English is your first language, right?” She rolled her eyes at the joke. “Like I said before, we just can’t ever be.”
“I understand what you’re saying, but I also know you don’t mean it.” She leaned closer to him to prevent from being overheard.
“I do,” he said, forcing the point.
“Oh really?” she tried to push him now. “It didn’t seem that way when you kissed me.”
“Kira, forget that ever happened, okay?”
“Or what? You don’t scare me.”
“I should,” he said and shot Kira a lethal look.
His eyes changed color to the lightest blue she could imagine, and they held her captive. Not in the romantic way, but as though she were a prisoner held paralyzed. His eyes were ice cold, making her shiver as though she had been dropped in an arctic pool, and slowly his pupils began to expand, overtaking his irises.
Kira was scared, but more than that, she felt like he knew it and didn’t care. Try as she might, she couldn’t look away—completely stuck. Slowly, a feeling of warmth spread to her hands, burning hot, a sense of power that fought the fear tightening her stomach in knots.
Whipping her gaze to the floor, Kira breathed heavy as she finally broke his stare. Her fingertips still tingled with the heat that had coursed through her, allowing her to break his gaze. Kira leaned back against her chair, away from him, and touched her fingers to her cheek.
They burned into her skin.
“What the hell was that?” she asked unsteadily, still not looking up. The heat emanating from her hand absorbed all of Kira’s thoughts.
“Me,” he said with the venom gone from his voice. She looked at him again and caught the unbearably sad expression in his eyes before he looked away.
Or me? she thought, feeling the warmth finally ebb.

COMPLETELY YOURS, Book #1
FOREVER MINE, Book #2

You can find out more about the books and add them to your shelf on the Series Page on Goodreads.

Here’s the excerpt for your reading pleasure:

She was still watching the ambulance, and she nodded absently. “Okay.”
He moved in front of her and crouched to get on eye level. “You can go right over and see them at the hospital. Mass General. If you’re not family, they might not be able to tell you much, but if you can get in touch with their families, they can come and sit with you, right?”
She nodded again but Zach wasn’t sure she’d heard him. He really wanted to know that someone was going to be there with her. Shock in survivors wasn’t uncommon. The that-could’ve-been-me thing could kick in at any moment if it hadn’t already. But there was nothing like seeing someone you cared about hurt.
He put his hands on her arms again, this time rubbing up and down and just ignoring how good her skin felt against his rough palms. Mostly. He needed to comfort her more than he needed to worry about how she made him feel.
“Do you know where Mass General is?” He didn’t love the idea of her driving herself over there. She was clearly overwhelmed.
Kiera nodded. “Yes.”
“You can get there?” he asked.
She nodded again.
Okay. So…
“Zach! Let’s go!”
Zach glanced over at Reed. His co-workers needed help so he was going to be here for a while. He couldn’t be messing around, obsessing about a woman who liked to play dress-up. “Kiera, I need to go but…”
“Yeah, of course.” She shook her head and looked around. “You go.”
“But…” But nothing. She was fine, and he was needed by people who weren’t fine. “Okay.”
He had the fleeting thought that he wanted to kiss her goodbye. But that was crazy. They’d just met. In the middle of an emergency. No way should he kiss her.
Finally, he let go of her and stepped back. But not touching her didn’t do a thing to make him not want to touch her. He forced himself to turn away and head toward Reed, trying to clear his mind of green and gold sweet-smelling flowers as he went. But when he got about twenty feet from her, he glanced back.
And she was still standing there. Hugging herself. Looking lost.
Fuck.
“I’ll be right there,” he told Reed.
Reed glanced back. “Dude…”
“I know.” And he did. He needed to not be distracted. But the only way that was going to happen was if he knew for sure that Kiera was taken care of.
He jogged back to her side. “Hey princess, what’s up?”
She looked at him, and her look of confusion cleared. That made him feel stupidly good.
“I don’t have a way…”
She trailed off, and Zach frowned. “You don’t feel up to driving?”
“We brought Sophie’s car, and her fob thingy is with her.”
Ah. A little issue. “You have someone you can call?”
“I didn’t bring my phone.”
“You can use mine.”
“No one’s home. I live with Maya and Sophie,” she said. “Obviously, they’re not… there.”
Her voice wobbled, and Zach worked on not grabbing her and hugging her.
They’d just fucking met. Hugging and kissing wasn’t appropriate. Dammit.
“How about a cab?”
“I don’t have any money.”
He looked her over again, revisiting the curves he realized he’d already memorized. He could give her money for a cab of course. He could get her home. But she’d be home alone. He could get her to the hospital, but they wouldn’t talk to her and she’d be stuck in the waiting room for God knew how long. Alone.
And leaving her alone was simply something he could not do.
“You need to come with me.” He reached out and snagged her hand before he could tell himself that holding her hand was a bad idea.
Because it was. Her hand felt good in his, and the way she curled her fingers around his tightly and followed him without question felt good. And the idea that he was going to get to spend more time with her felt good. And all of that was bad. And yet, he pulled her along with him through the convention hall and into the heart of the chaos.
“What are we doing?” she asked.
“I need to go help with some more injured. And I need you to stick with me.”
“Me? Why?”
He looked over at her. Her cape floated behind her, and for the first time, he noticed the golden sword swinging at her left hip. Damn. That was kind of hot. “Because you’re a gorgeous kick-ass warrior princess, and the people in here are gonna need some gorgeous kick-ass stuff.”
She looked at him with surprise, but as he held her gaze, he saw something that turned him on even more than her smelling like candy—a spark of determination. She pulled up straighter as she walked, and he felt her hand tighten on his.
“Kick ass. Right. I can do that.”
He smiled. “And I could use some help from an interpreter.”
“An interpreter? I speak some Spanish but that’s about it.”
“You don’t speak geek?” He hoped he wasn’t committing a faux pau in calling her, and all of this, geeky.
But she actually gave him a half smile. “Oh, geek. Yes, I’m fluent.”
