Sunday Salon: Silence of the Wolf and Blindsided

Can you believe we’ve come to the final Sunday Salon of March?

I don’t know about where you are, but for me the weather isn’t feeling much like spring yet. I keep hoping the sun will come out and the temperature will go up at least a few degrees.

This week for Sunday Salon I have an interesting paranormal romance to share with you and a fun women’s fiction audio. One of the things I enjoy about author Terry Spear’s paranormal books is that she makes them so realistic and she always has an intriguing plot to keep you guessing. I enjoy author Fern Michaels women’s fiction series for the well-blended characters and crazy antics she combines.

Top off that latest cup of coffee, find a comfortable chair, prop your feet up and relax. It’s time to discuss the books we’ve read or listened to lately.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF by Terry Spear

Silence of the Wolf coverAnyone who skips over author Terry Spear’s Heart of the Wolf series because it’s listed as a paranormal romance is missing out on stories packed with depth and intrigue, fascinating characters, stirring surroundings, and heartwarming relationships.

In the latest installment in the series, SILENCE OF THE WOLF, Spear tackles issues of sibling rivalry, family outcast, and finding acceptance. She shows how some families pull together giving love and support, while others turn on each other thinking only of themselves.

Since the death of her parents, Elizabeth Wildwood has been on her own. Her half-brother and uncle want nothing to do with her because of her ‘mixed’ half-wolf, half-coyote blood. She is willing to risk everything, including her life, to get the evidence of who killed her parents.

Elizabeth ventures into gray wolf territory for the evidence and to write an article on the Silver Town Ski Resort. She finds the town is wolf-run by the Silver brothers and their pack. Her encounter with sub-leader Tom Silver is life changing.

The last thing Tom Silver is interested in is finding a mate and settling down like his brothers. When he has to escort Elizabeth to the slopes for her article, he discovers her scent and memory linger with him long after she’s gone.

When it appears Elizabeth’s life is in danger, Tom and his family are there to protect and help her. It’s a strange new concept for Elizabeth to have someone in her corner. She has to discover who killed her parents and if she can trust someone loves her for who she really is.

The story is heartwarming and funny. It’s filled with suspense and steamy romance. It’s a mesmerizing story of love, family and friendship that will have you believing in wolf shifters. The characters are likable and realistic. The story moves at a quick pace and is hard to put down. Spear has incorporated her vast research of wolves into this tantalizing tale. Her rich descriptions of the setting brings the town to life.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF is the 13th installment in the Heart of the Wolf series, but can be read on its own. New readers to the series won’t be left in the dark and returning fans will be able to catch up with old friends from past installments.

The romance is sizzling, the characters charismatic, and the plot suspenseful for an entertaining, heart-pounding, page turner that will hold you captive until the very end.

BLINDSIDED by Fern Michaels

Blindsided coverLaughter, excitement, suspense, a bit of danger and a lot of revenge run amuck when the ladies gather at Pinewood.

The ladies of author Fern Michaels’ Sisterhood series aren’t ones to fade quietly into the background. Though it has been awhile since the ladies were called upon to dispense their own brand of justice, they are always ready for a new challenge.

Narrator Laural Merlington does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. Her distinct mannerisms and vocalizations have you believing there’s more than one narrator. She does a great job of switching not only genders, but vast age differences. Merlington adds enjoyable dimensions to the characters and enhances the author’s story.

This go-around only the older members of the Sisterhood are called into action at the request of Maggie Spritzer, an honorary member of the Sisterhood and former editor-in-chief of The Post. Maggie senses something is not right with two Maryland judges. She believes the judges, identical twins Celeste and Eunice Ciprani, have a moneymaking racket going on by sending youthful offenders to ruthless boot camps on charges that deserve far lesser sentences.

Powerful and merciless, the Ciprani twins run their town with an iron fist. Taking them down won’t be easy, but then the Sisterhood has never backed away from a challenge. Maggie, Myra, Annie and the gang come up with a plan that brings justice to the innocent and deals severely with the very guilty judges.

Once again Michaels has crafted a story of suspense, intrigue and laughter. The main characters are well-developed and likable, while the villains possess all the traits you hate for a well-balanced group. The story flows smoothly and quickly with a few surprises along the way and a good blend of humor woven throughout.

The steadfast band of friends once again continue their renowned brand of dispensing justice for an entertaining and spellbinding story.

BLINDSIDED is the 22nd installment in the Sisterhood series. It can be read/listened to on its own. However, to get a better grasp of the Sisterhood and their actions, a few earlier installments in the series should be read/listened to.

This story will have you laughing, holding your breath and cheering for the underdog. Can’t wait to see what happens next with the Sisterhood.

Blindsided by Fern Michaels, Sisterhood Series Book #22, Performed by Laural Merlington, Brilliance Audio, @2014, ISBN: 978-1480566156, Unabridged, 8 Discs, Listening Time: 10 Hours

The Cowboy’s Christmas Baby and A SEAL Wolf Christmas

Today I’m sharing my thoughts on new releases from two of my favorite authors in series I enjoy following.

Both books have a Christmas theme, but can be enjoyed anytime of the year. What better way to enjoy the holiday season than to give these delightful books as stocking stuffers.

9781402280498Author Carolyn Brown’s books should come with a warning label. It should caution that once you begin reading, you’ll lose all track of time being absorbed into the story so you can’t put it down.

With each new book I have a general idea of how the story will end. However, it’s the fun of getting to the end of the story I enjoy. Plus, Brown has an amusing way of slipping twists and turns in along the way that I didn’t see coming.

Ranch owner Lucas Allen never expected to find a girlfriend while serving as a National Guardsman in Kuwait. But it turns out he did and she is the best friend of his buddy and they met over the internet. Despite the miles apart, Lucas knows there’s something extra special about Natalie Drew.

Lucas is returning home and Natalie is scheduled to visit. But when Lucas arrives home early, he finds Natalie already there and she has a surprise she forgot to mention to him during the year they’ve been dating online – she has a baby. It seems Lucas has a few surprises of his own that might not set too well with Natalie either.

As the two try to work through their problems, they have some help from family and friends. Love discovered online may not be strong enough to withstand the ups and downs of real life.

Brown’s characters are well-developed, likable and so realistic you’d swear some are based on people you know. Brown gives them strength and courage, but also flaws and problems readers can relate to.

The setting has a ‘down home country’ appeal. You feel the warmth of family and friendship through Brown’s words and the actions of her characters. For a well-blended story, Brown spices it up with a tantalizing romance and laugh out-loud humor.

THE COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS BABY is the second installment in Brown’s Cowboys and Brides series, but can be read as a stand-alone. This is a light-hearted, feel-good romance that is a delight to read. Can’t wait to see what Brown has planned for the rest of the series.

A SEAL WOLF CHRISTMAS by Terry Spear

9781402284083I know every time I pick up one of author Terry Spear’s books, I will soon be believing the unbelievable.

Spear has a magical way of weaving a tale of paranormal shape shifting werewolves that seems like the most normal thing. She blends her story with sizzling romance, suspense, military intrigue and touches of humor for a well-balanced read.

Featuring a group of Navy SEALs who can also shift into wolves, Spear adds in holiday cheer for a fun read. Navy SEAL Bjornolf Jorgenson and undercover operative Anna Johnson, both gray wolves, have to pretend to be newlyweds preparing for the holidays while investigating a fellow SEAL’s murder at a Christmas tree farm. Since both dread the holidays, Bjornolf and Anna don’t mind working. Appearing to be a happy couple, however may be more difficult than they anticipated.

While other couples are finding stolen kisses under the mistletoe, Bjornolf and Anna find danger. Their passion heats up and so does their mission.

The characters are likable and well-developed. The setting draws you in and holds you captivate until the end. This is the 12th installment in Spear’s Heart of the Wolf series, but can be read on its own.

Spear’s extensive research and eye for detail brings this tantalizing tale to life. Readers can escape to a world of amazing characters and intriguing adventure in A SEAL WOLF CHRISTMAS.

A Howl For A Highlander by Terry Spear

Within the first few paragraphs, author Terry Spear has a way of pulling you into her story and making you believe it’s plausible.

Spear not only paints a beautiful setting with her detailed descriptions,9781402258930_p0_v2_s600 she makes you feel you are there. Her eye for detail, along with her extensive research of the location and wolves is an added bonus for readers of her series.

A Howl For A Highlander, Spear’s latest installment in her Heart of the Wolf series, is a fine example of her work. This time around Spear takes readers to the fascinating Grand Cayman Islands and the alluring beauty of the Scottish Highlands. One minute you can feel the ocean breeze on your face, the next you can hear the haunting melody of bagpipes.

Former stockbroker and gray wolf Salisbury ‘Sal’ Silverman has stolen from the wrong family this time. He has taken money from the MacNeills and ran off to the Grand Cayman Islands. It’s up to Duncan MacNeill to find Silverman, recovery the money, and make sure the gray wolf doesn’t bother anyone ever again.

MacNeill, a Highland wolf, rarely leaves his native homeland. He wants to find Silverman, do what he has to do and get back to Argent Castle, his ancestral home, as fast as he can.

What MacNeill nor Silverman planned on was Shelley Campbell, a lone red wolf and beautiful botanist studying plants in the Caribbean. When MacNeill and Campbell are drawn together in their quest to find Silverman, they also find their attraction to one another is as hot as the Caribbean sun.

The characters are well-developed and the story flows at a steady pace. Spear combines steamy romance, adventure, a touch of mystery and suspense with a bit of humor to create a well-rounded story. While her book has a paranormal element, the heart of the story deals with love, family and loyalty. With those elements portrayed as she has, you begin to think anything is possible - even shape-shifting werewolves.

A Howl For A Highlander is the 10th installment in the Heart of the Wolf series, but can be read on its own. New readers won’t be left in the dark and returning fans will enjoy that the series continues.

The romantic Caribbean and the seductive Scottish Highlands mixed with a passionate couple, a dash of intrigue and a splash of humor results in a tantalizing concoction that will hold you spellbound as you turn the pages of A Howl For A Highlander.

A SEAL IN WOLF’S CLOTHING by Terry Spear

Author Terry Spear has a way of making the151034506 paranormal seem everyday ordinary with an intriguing twist that comes off normal.

Her latest release, A SEAL IN WOLF’S CLOTHING, features a feisty female protagonist who puts on a brave front despite her weaknesses. Returning fans of the Heart of the Wolf series will be happy to see Meara Greymore get her own storyline, while new readers will find the character fun, lovable and a bit annoying as only a kid sister can be.

The male protagonist, Finn Emerson, is a hunky Navy SEAL and an alpha wolf. He’s a buddy of Meara’s brother, Hunter. He’s sexy, protective and has a tender side that makes him adorable even with his he-man image.

While Hunter is away on his honeymoon, Meara decides to have a little fun and search for a mate at the same time without her over-protective brother interfering. Meanwhile, Finn decides being the only responsible alpha male around, he’ll keep an eye on Meara for Hunter. He maybe overqualified to baby-sit, but he finds his hands full with Meara and her antics.

The story moves along smoothly and at a good pace. The bantering between Meara and Finn will have you laughing. As the sparks between them begin to fly, you’ll be turning up the AC. While all is not calm and quiet around the compound, there’s underlying trouble brewing and an assassin is on the lose.

In addition to the vast wolf knowledge Spear includes in her story, she gives vivid details of the Oregon coast scenery. With the lush descriptions, readers can almost smell the salty ocean breeze drawing them further into the story.

A SEAL IN WOLF’S CLOTHING is a delightful and tantalizing read. The characters are spirited and realistic causing you to believe in their unique abilities. Once you start reading, you’ll be captivated. You’ll be transported to a world of sexy werewolves, loyalty, intrigue, a bit of danger, and a lot of fun. This series never fails to entertain and surprise me.

Author Terry Spear: Her Characters’ Library And A Giveaway

It’s always a pleasure for me to welcome awardSpear, Terry-winning, multi-talented author Terry Spear here when she tours blogdom with her latest release in the Heart of the Wolf series.

Terry’s current release is DREAMING OF THE WOLF, another intriguing installment in the series that I reviewed earlier. Thanks to Terry and Danielle at Sourcebooks, I have 2 copies of DREAMING OF THE WOLF to giveaway to 2 lucky readers who comment on this post between now and 8 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, Jan. 7. The giveaway is open to residents of the U.S. and Canada only. Be sure to leave your e-mail address with your comment if it’s not included in your profile.

With the hectic holiday season, Terry has graciously answered some unusual questions about the main characters in DREAMING OF THE WOLF and their likes.

Mason - Would your main 2 characters have a library or a collection of books?

Terry - Alicia has a few books on self-defense techniques, places to hike, and identifying Colorado wildflowers. She also loves to read up on ways to influence people using the powers of persuasion and psychology, particularly in her bounty hunter work.

Jake has s30everal books on photography and enjoys learning more about taking pictures of the subject/object in unusual ways to make them really shine. He can’t wait to take lots of pictures of Alicia, as she’s the wildest flower he’s ever found in Colorado. And he loves to cook. So he’s got a few special recipe books around. He has a friend in Minnesota who just sent him a special treat, Minnesota’s state grain, an annual grass that grows wild in the lakes and rivers known as wild rice. They even grow it commercially in paddies—the only cultivated cereal grain native to North America. So he’s looking forward to fixing corn and wild rice soup with smoked sausage for his mate.

Mason - Tell us one thing about each of the 2 main characters that even their friends don't know.

Terry - First off, no one would have ever suspected Jake would fall head over heels in lust with a human. But it’s more than that. She’s on his mind 24-7 and he thinks he’s fallen in love. Alicia? Ha! No way is she EVER going to get hitched again. Two times were enough. No one would ever suspect she’d fall for another man, ever!

Mason - How did these main 2 characters first come to you?

Terry - I always like to come up with different occupations. I’d seen some bounty hunter shows where the bounty hunters were women. And I watched a program where two women talked about their bounty hunting experience. So that started the idea of her occupation. As to the Mob…my mother’s grandfather was French and he had a half-sister who was married to another Frenchman in Fort Wayne, Indiana, who was bringing liquor illegally into Chicago from Canada and selling it during Prohibition. Al Capone had his brother taken hostage and threatened to kill him, if the Frenchman didn’t cease selling in the Mafia’s Chicago territory. So I was fascinated with the Mob, and thought to include that aspect in the story.

As to Jake, he was already in two stories, DESTINY OF THE WOLF, Book 2, brother to Darien, the pack leader, and WOLF FEVER, Book 6. So his character was already developed, but when a person is introduced to a new situation, they will often act differently than if they are in the same old rut with family and friends. In his case, he’s away from his hometown, away from the pack, away from a town that is run by a werewolf pack, and when he meets a damsel in distress, he’s taking care of her. He never goes on vacation, never stays with a human woman longer than for a quick exchange—so Alicia really does turn his world inside out from the very beginning.

Mason - Do you try to include some type of meaning or message (such as enjoy life) in your story or does it just develop on its own?

Terry - It always just grows on its own. For instance, when I was writing THE ANCIENT FAE, I was thinking about archeological digs and how some found such finds extraordinary to learn more about the ancient past, and how some would find it just old junk. But what if someone found your “stuff” buried under layers of earth in the far distant future? What would it mean to anyone? To you, some of what you have has a special meaning. How could it mean anything to someone in the future? Certainly not the same as it means to you.

I’ve watched a lot of archeological digs on television, and actually saw them digging woolly mammoth bones out of a site near me, so I find it all fascinating. One day while I was moving some special river stones that I had used in the garden that had been buried with mulch and blowing dirt, I thought about how someone, if I hadn’t moved the smooth stones, might have dug them up and thought a river might have existed here at one time. LOL So how much is transplanted and really not from the existing site?

And that’s what happens when I write. I see snippets of some facts—like in the case of bounty hunters and one of the men saying that he doesn’t use brute force to apprehend, but psychology most of the time. Another had said they tried to have women go in to do the apprehensions when it involved a woman to avoid sexual harassment accusations. In one case, a bounty hunter said he’d had no trouble except when he ran into a meth lab. And then, it was volatile—guns and drugs and money. So research definitely makes a difference in what I write.

Of course some of it is planned, like the fact that I wanted to take Jake out of his comfortable surroundings and…turn his world upside down. Sometimes, that’s what we need. An earth-shattering change in our lives to make us realize that maybe we need to go in a different direction and find the ultimate happiness that way. Or sometimes, that we need to realize just how fortunate we already are when we see others who don’t have half of what we do and not take it for granted. Jake is annoyed with his family’s intrusion into his business with Alicia because she’s human, yet he feels for her because she no longer has any family. So he’s caught in between.

For Alicia, she’s so distraught about her mother’s death, the fact she’s had two failed marriages and she really has no one to turn to any longer, I wanted to show that she has a purpose in life and that she’s not alone. That she is loved and that she is important. Even with the people at the art gallery who are annoyed with her because she’s locked herself in the bathroom and it’s closing time and they want to go home, I wanted to show that when they believe she’s ill, their attitudes change completely.

It’s human nature to want to help in a case like that. That at that moment, they had a new purpose in life—but not just for the moment. Alicia had impacted on their lives in a more profound way. Just as she had on the police force in Breckenridge where her mother was murdered, and at the flower shop where she and her mother would visit.

But what if the art gallery staff really knew why she had locked herself in the bathroom???

Then THEY would have had a life-altering experience, and who knows what would have happened then.

Thanks so much for having me here today, Mason! I loved your thought-provoking questions. Happy Holidays to everyone!

Terry, thanks so much for guest blogging and answering these unusual questions. It’s nice to have a look at the characters outside the book so to speak. It’s also fun learning about the Mob connection. Happy Holidays to you as well.

Now a bit of background on Terry. She has written a dozen paranormal romance novels, with over 60,000 copies sold. She received Publishers Weekly’s Best Book of the Year in 2008 for HEART OF THE WOLF

Here’s a brief synopsis of DREAMING OF THE WOLF: A fierce hunter…
Alicia Greiston is a no-nonsense bounty hunter determined to bring a ring of mobsters to justice. Her dogged pursuit of the crime family has forced her to avoid relationships—any man would only become a target for retribution. Luckily, Jake Silver is more than a man, and his instincts are telling him to stop at nothing to protect her.

An animal passion…
However, the mob isn’t entirely human either, and soon Alicia must flee for her life. When Alicia and Jake’s passion begins to spill over into their dreams, Jake learns he will have to do more than defend her—he’ll have to show his mate the way of the wolf.

Do you enjoy learning background on the characters you read about? Thanks so much for stopping by today. Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of Terry’s DREAMING OF THE WOLF

Books To Enjoy And Give

The books I have to share with you today are from completely different genres, but have a couple of things in common. Both books are enjoyable and would make wonderful Christmas gifts.

First I’ll share a bit of suspense/romance/fantasy and then a look at some amazing items to create.

Dreaming Of The Wolf by Terry Spear
dreamingofwolf-300

Author Terry Spear has a way of making the unbelievable believable creating realistic characters that seem as normal as your next door neighbors, but with a tiny hidden secret.

Alicia Greiston is a bright and beautiful woman. She also happens to be a bounty hunter on the trail of the mobsters who killed her mother. She’s a bit more than she appears to be as well.

Jake Silver is handsome and sexy, and enjoys taking amazing photographs in his spare time. Managing a leather goods factory and running the town and pack as his older brother’s sub-leader is Jake’s main job. You see, Jake is a werewolf.

A chance meeting in town draws Jake and Alicia together. When he sees what she’s up against, Jake is determined to protect her. With their first encounter, sparks begin to fly. Their attraction is hot and intense, even in their dreams.

DREAMING OF THE WOLF is filled with murder, mystery, suspense, family loyalty, humor and lots of passion. Spear not only creates main characters that hold your attention, but supporting secondary characters that enhance the story. The action is fast-pace. The intrigue will keep you on the edge of your seat and the romance sizzles.

While DREAMING OF THE WOLF is the 8th installment in the Heart of the Wolf Series, it is a stand alone read. However, there are a number of characters fans of the series will remember from previous stories. At the same time readers will wonder which of the secondary characters may show up in their own story later.

With a blend of vast wolf knowledge, an intriguing plotline, and great characters, Spear brings the story to life making it seem natural to be a shape-shifting werewolf.

For readers who shy away from paranormal stories, I would recommend giving one of Spear’s werewolf books a try. There is always great depth to the characters, intriguing story lines, action, mystery, suspense and romance along with the fantasy that she makes seem plausible.

Wolf Fever by Terry Spear

Thought it was time to share a review with you. Today’s book is of the paranormal genre, but also contains humor, intrigue and a lot of suspense and romance.
Wolf Fever by Terry Spear

Nurse Carol Wood thought she had enough on her hands trying to
cope with her psychic ability. Little did she know things were about to get a lot crazier.

In a twist of fate, Carol is bitten by a lupus garous. Now she must also come to terms with the fact that she’s a werewolf.

Because of her premonitions, Carol fights the urge to transform into a werewolf. In her visions she’s seen where the werewolves aren’t able to shift back to their human form.

Darien Silver, pack leader of the red werewolves in Silver City, is getting fed up with Carol’s refusal to accept her new werewolf condition. He doesn’t know about her premonitions. He’s decided Carol needs a mate to keep her in line and werewolves mate for life.

Meanwhile, P.I. Ryan McKinley comes snooping around because he can’t get Carol out of his thoughts. Ryan attributes it to Carol helping him with a case using her psychic ability, which he finds hard to believe. This is ironic since Ryan is the pack leader of the gray werewolves in Green Valley.

A kidnapping attempt is made for Carol. Darien suspects it was by relatives of the man who turned Carol and was then killed. Since Ryan is already around, Darien agrees for him to be her body guard. That’s when things really begin to heat up. To add to the mix, the group soon learns there really is a virus affecting the werewolves.

While trying to find a cure, Carol and Ryan fight their attraction to one another. They are strong individuals, but find that they are unstoppable as a team.

This is the sixth installment in the Heart of the Wolf series. Though references are made to prior events and people, this is a stand alone book. While the main characters will fascinate you, the secondary characters all have their own blend of charm as well.

Author Terry Spear has demonstrated once again that she can have you believing in the unbelievable. Her characters draw you in and the fast pace action keeps you enthralled until the end. Along the way she sprinkles in just enough humor with the suspense, while taking your breath away with the romance.

WOLF FEVER is the perfect prescription for warming those cold reading nights (and days). If you’re not a fan of werewolves, you will be by the end. Author Terry Spear creates werewolves that will captivate you with their honesty, love of family, loyalty, fun nature, and charming ways.
