Piper Morgan to the Rescue {+ Giveaway}

I’m super excited today to be participating in this week’s Cover Reveal Blast for PIPER MORGAN TO THE RESCUE by Stephanie Faris.
PIPER MORGAN TO THE RESCUE is Book #3 in Stephanie’s four-book chapter book series from Simon & Schuster's Aladdin line. As part of the cover reveal, Stephanie is joining us to talk about ‘the importance of reviews to authors’ and is hosting a tour-wide giveaway for one of her books. Please see the end of the post for more giveaway details.

Here’s a brief blurb for PIPER MORGAN TO THE RESCUE:
Piper helps some four-legged friends find the perfect home in the third book of the brand-new Piper Morgan series.
Piper is super excited to help out at Bark Street, a local animal shelter in town. Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by adorable puppies and dogs all day? And when Piper sees Taffy, the cutest dog she has ever seen, Piper is determined to find a way to bring Taffy home. But it won’t be easy—especially when she finds out someone else wants to make Taffy a part of their family, too!
Please join me now in welcoming friend, fellow blogger and author Stephanie Faris to Thoughts as she talks about the importance of reviews. Welcome, Stephanie.
We’ve all seen messages urging readers to leave reviews for authors. It’s the best way to show your support for your favorite novelists, people say. But are reviews really all that important?
Reviews are all about Amazon visibility. None of us really know for sure how Amazon chooses which books it displays in search results or recommendations. Most of these sites don’t publicize this information because if they did, authors would find a way to “work the system.” But one thing is clear: reviews boost your visibility on Amazon.
Some say a certain number of five-star reviews will prompt Amazon to recommend your book more often when customers look at similar items. Items with a large number of reviews will also often show up at the top of search rankings on the site. Although reviews aren’t the only factor for this, it does lend a book a certain amount of authenticity.
With both Goodreads and Amazon, a review does something even more valuable than help new readers find a book. It lets the author know that there are readers actually out there. A fellow author once said that she actually loved her first one-star review because it reminded her that people besides her friends and family were reading the book. I completely understood that. There’s nothing more exciting than realizing that someone you’ve never met picked up your book and read it. Okay—there’s one thing more exciting: someone you’ve never met picking up your book, reading it, and loving it!
So do your favorite authors a favor: leave a review. Even if you just give five stars and write “Loved it!” in the comment box, it could make a big difference, especially to a new author.
Stephanie, thanks for joining us today and sharing this look why reviews matter. Even as a book reviewer, I sometimes take for granted what it means to an author to have a review.
Now for those of you who aren’t familiar with Stephanie, here’s a bit of background on her.
Author Stephanie Faris
Stephanie Faris knew she wanted to be an author from a very young age. In fact, her mother often told her to stop reading so much and go outside and play with the other kids. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism, she somehow found herself working in information technology. But she never stopped writing.
Stephanie is the Simon & Schuster author of 30 Days of No Gossip and 25 Roses, as well as the upcoming Piper Morgan series. When she isn’t crafting fiction, she writes for a variety of online websites on the topics of business, technology, and her favorite subject of all—fashion. She lives in Nashville with her husband, a sales executive.
For more on Stephanie and her writing, visit her website and blog. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Because of Love and More Mormon Origami

Because of Love cover on Thoughts in ProgressIt’s a pleasure to be participating in two blog tours today hosted by Cedar Fort Publishing and Media. Both books are designed for the entire family’s enjoyment and you could say both have a spiritual-related theme.
Keep in mind Christmas is less than two months away and these would make wonderful gifts for someone on your list (or for yourself).

BECAUSE OF LOVE by Shauna Brown

Gifts that come from the heart truly touch us the most and author Shauna Brown portrays that beautifully in her release, BECAUSE OF LOVE.

Children taunting children for the way they look and dress has been around for ages. When Josephine, the youngest of the three Brown sisters, is made fun of because of her skinny legs and large, heavy boots, her mother Phoebe decides it’s time to do something.

The girls’ father Byron had always insisted the family wear sturdy, heavy boots to protect their feet after he had to walk barefooted a great distance in his youth. Without telling her husband, Phoebe decided to surprise each of the girls with a special Christmas gift.

Meanwhile, the girls decided to try to buy their own shoes saving their money. Before Christmas they realized they didn’t have enough for shoes for themselves, but by putting their money together they could get their mother a special present with their father’s help.

Christmas morning the family discovered that they all had learned a great deal from the hardship of wearing heavy boots.

This is an enchanting story that takes readers back to a Christmas of simpler times. The story is a blend of love, caring, faith, understanding, and family. The characters are likable and the story flows quickly.

BECAUSE OF LOVE is a heart-warming story to share with the entire family at Christmas or anytime of the year. This is a delightful reminder of the joy caring for one another can bring.

Can You Have Too Many Books?

Do you have too many books? I don’t think you can ever have too many books, maybe just not enough room to house and display them all. But, I do think you can sometimes become overwhelmed by so many wonderful books coming out at the same time that you can’t possible read them all and keep up.

At least that’s where I find myself at times, like now.

Add to that all the amazing authors (from both traditional and non-traditional publishing) that I’d like to introduce you to or the authors we know and love that have another fascinating release out I’d like to tell you about. Here I feel even more like I’m losing ground. And that doesn’t include the book tours, launch day/cover blitz or blogfest, not to mention the popup special feature/giveaways, book news in general and so much more.

I’m not complaining, mind you, and I know fully well that I can’t participate or host everything that’s going on in the book world (even in a single genre of it). It’s a joy to know there’s so many great books out there and so many, many more being added each day. I just wish there was a way to share more of these terrific titles with you. Sometimes I have to group several things together (like reviews) to be able to tell you about them, but I don’t like bombarding you with too much at one time and I like to give author’s own space when possible.

Okay, I know I could have used today’s post to tell you about a couple of amazing audio books I just finished. Those will come a little later in the month. But, let’s face it – it’s a holiday here in the U.S. and I wasn’t sure if Thoughts would have that much traffic. Besides, I don’t get to do much rambling anymore and this seemed like a good day for it.

I am so very thankful to all the authors and publishers who provide me with such remarkable stories to read and listened to. I never want y’all to think otherwise. I’m also equally thankful to y’all for supporting Thoughts and I’m always delighted to hear your thoughts on how I can better provide book-related (or any) information to you.

While I may feel overwhelmed at times, I’ll keep trying to tell you about as many of the new books by favorite authors and new authors and their books as I can. Please always feel free to share any new books and/or authors you know about in the comments. I wish this blog template had the section for allowing the recent blog post link of those commenting like other templates I’ve seen. Maybe I need to change templates. Any suggestions?

Thanks for stopping by today. Hope you’re having a wonderful day whether you’re celebrating the holiday or not.

Now tell us what your TBR stack looks like – a couple of books, a stack higher than your head or so many books you don’t even want to begin to count? Do you collect books or do you give them away after reading them? If you have a large selection of books, how do you manage to store them all?

Happy reading all and be safe! HAPPY LABOR DAY!

The Crew Goes Coconuts coverBullying is a problem facing many youngsters so it’s good to see stories that show how wrong bullying is and that respecting each other is important.

Cowboys, Nurses, Interior Designers, Tennis Pros, Oh My!

It’s always a pleasure to welcome you here and share my thoughts on the latest books I’ve read. Today is no exception as I have two delightful, romance-flavored, feel-good stories to tell you about.

HOW TO MARRY A COWBOY by Carolyn Brown

How to Marry a Cowboy coverAuthor Carolyn Brown creates characters so charming and likable you wish they were real friends and neighbors.

In the latest and last installment in her Cowboys and Brides series, Brown brings the circle to a close by giving the last of the four cowboys his special story. HOW TO MARRY A COWBOY focuses on Mason Harper, his two wholly-terror twin girls, and their wish for a mama.

When the girls, Gabby and Lily, find Annie Rose Boudreaux asleep on their front porch swing, they think their father has given them a mama for their ninth birthday. Well, she was wearing a tattered wedding gown and they had been wishing and asking really hard.

Annie Rose is desperate to stay under the radar as her life could depend on it. When she gets the chance to care for the two adorable little girls, she can’t resist. A former nurse, Annie Rose can handle whatever the twins come up with. As she begins to settle into the role of ‘Mama Nanny,’ the sparks between her and Mason heat up, but her past could blow everything apart.

Mason hasn’t had a serious relationship or even deep feelings for anyone since his wife died eight years ago. As he begins to have feelings for Annie Rose, he also has a load of guilty to deal with. His daughters have to come first, no matter the cost.
The story is a fun mix of romance, humor, a touch of suspense, loyalty, family and friendship. It flows smoothly and at a steady pace. The small town setting creates an atmosphere of fun and family.

Brown once again delivers sexy cowboys and feisty cowgirls in a hot and steamy read you won’t be able to put down. The antics of the twins, blended with the sizzling attraction between Mason and Annie Rose, makes for an excellent feel-good read that will have you smiling when you’re not laughing out loud.

HOW TO MARRY A COWBOY is the fourth installment in the Cowboys and Brides series, but can be read on its own. References to other couples from the series won’t leave new readers in the dark, but it might just entice them to read the entire collection.

How to Marry a Cowboy by Carolyn Brown, Cowboys and Brides Book #4, Sourcebooks Casablanca, @2014, ISBN: 978-1402280559, Paperback, 352 Pages

FIND MY WAY HOME by Michele Summers

Find My Way Home coverPeople are not always as they seem as the main characters in author Michele Summers’s latest release, FIND MY WAY HOME, discover.

In this first installment in the author’s Harmony Homecomings series, interior designer Bertie Anderson loves her hometown of Harmony, NC, but can’t wait to move to Atlanta and start her dream job for a major design company. Finishing her last job in Harmony, Bertie learns the old Victorian house she loves has been bought.

When Bertie is given the challenge of renovating the old Victorian in three months to receive a huge fee plus bonus, she can’t resist. The bonus will not only keep her out financially, but she can also help one of her only beloved charities.

When Bertie and Keith are thrown together due to the renovation project, sparks and tempers begin to fly. Despite their strong attraction to each other, the pair is determined to go their separate ways. But their family and the residents of Harmony have something to say about that.

FIND MY WAY HOME is a hilarious, feel-good story that will tug on your heart strings, while leaving in you stitches from laughing. The author has created warm and likable characters. The small-town setting pulls you in for a family atmosphere.

Stay With Me and The Fever

Do you remember how life was when you were a teenager? If you have teenagers, think about all they face today that we didn’t.
I have two intriguing books to tell you about today that involve teenagers in different ways.

STAY WITH ME by Alison Gaylin

Stay With Me coverIn author Alison Gaylin’s latest thriller, STAY WITH ME, readers learn remembering is not always a good thing.

The protagonist, Brenna Spector, is a superb private investigator thanks to her ‘hyperthymestic syndrome,’ which enables her to remember any day in time intensely including all aspects of it.

The condition was brought on by her sister’s disappearance many years ago. The condition is also causing a riff between Brenna and her daughter, Maya, who feels she’s second in her mother’s world with her missing Aunt Clea always first.

When Maya suddenly disappears, Brenna’s world is turned upside down. Using her expert skills, Brenna begins to search for Maya and in the process discovers the past and the present could be connected.

The story moves at a steady pace and holds your attention from beginning to end. The characters are well-delve loped and realistic. The author paints a vivid setting with her words that come to life on the pages.

This psychological thriller is well-balanced with emotion and action. It’s a suspenseful read to keep you on the edge of your seat guessing the outcome.

STAY WITH ME is the third installment in the Brenna Spector series, but can be read on its own.

Stay With Me by Alison Gaylin, Brenna Spector Novel Book #3, Harper, @2014, ISBN: 978-0061878268, Paperback, 384 Pages

FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was sent to me as part of the author virtual book tour. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

This next book I had the opportunity to begin reading a print copy and finish by listening to a downloadable audio version.

THE FEVER by Megan Abbott

The Fever coverThe antics of teenagers and a mysterious illness spreading through a high school are at the core of Megan Abbott’s THE FEVER.

Narrators Caitlin Davies, Kirby Heyborne and Joe Barrett do a great job bringing the characters to life. Their interruptions of the characters’ emotions as they story unfolds adds depth to this suspenseful tale. Their mannerisms enhance the story.

The story focuses on Deenie; her friends, Gabby and Lise; Deenie’s brother, Eli; and her father, Tom, a teacher at the high school. When Lise has a seizure in the classroom, rumors begin as to what caused it. Later when Lise is rushed to the hospital in serious condition after another episode, full-blown gossip begins. Fear and speculation mount when other girls in the school begin to have similar seizures.

While Deenie isn’t affected by the seizures, her world is turned upside down as friendships are strained and blame is tossed around. The students’ theories about the epidemic runs rampant with speculation, while the parents are just as baffled.

This is a story told on a number of levels, with listeners/readers being drawn in and held spellbound waiting for an answer to the illness. With all the twists and turns, the story still flows smoothly and at a steady pace.

The characters are realistic and with traits parents of teens can easily relate to. THE FEVER holds listeners/readers in a grip of ‘what if’ as the mysterious illness is uncovered. This tantalizing tale will stay with you long after the closing sentence.

The Fever by Megan Abbott; Little, Brown and Company; @2014, ISBN: 978-0316231053, Hardcover, 320 Pages

Audible Audio Edition; Narrators: Caitlin Davies, Kirby Heyborne and Joe Barrett; Hachette Audio; @2014; ASIN: B00K7KTDX8; Unabridged; Listening Time: 9 Hours and 12 Minutes

FTC Full Disclosure – A print and downloadable audio copy of this book were sent to me by the publisher and as part of the author’s virtual book tour in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copies did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope I’ve enticed you a bit with these two enthralling stories. Do you think teenagers have it easier or harder now than when you were growing up?

Sunday Salon: Stink and the Shark Sleepover, and Ice Dogs

Welcome to the first Sunday Salon of April. I hope the weather is
treating you well and acting more like spring than the icy fingers of winter.

For today’s Sunday Salon I’m talking about books for the youth. Since I don’t have children, I’ve never been one to check out children’s books – until the last few years. I have several young cousins who enjoy reading and I want to encourage that so I now look at children’s books.

What I’ve found has surprised me. I made the mistake of thinking children’s books could only appeal to a child. Boy, was I wrong. I’ve discovered that the children’s books are both interesting and entertaining for adults too. While some are geared to youngsters in their use of language, they still tell wonderful stories adults can enjoy.

One of the books I want to share today is geared toward youngsters in the third and fourth grade level, and the other is geared toward fourth grade and up. I must say, I learned a great deal from both books and would highly recommend them.

Now, refill your coffee cup, sit back and relax. It’s time to talk BOOKS!!!

Stink coverSpending a night at an aquarium leads to an exciting adventure of fun, knowledge, and scary moments in the latest installment in the Stink Books.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat does a great job of bringing this children’s tale to life. Her mannerisms and cadence captures the energy of this rowdy group of youngsters, along with the calm adults on hand.

Stink Moody’s family won tickets to a sleepover at the local aquarium. Mom, Dad, Stink and sister Judy are joined by Stink’s friends, Sophie and Webster, for the overnight exploit.

At the aquarium the youngsters explore a number of exhibits as they participate in a scavenger hunt. Afterwards, the group hears the tale of the Bloody Mary Vampire Squid around an artificial campfire. Later the kids do a little exploring on their own coming face to face with Bloody Mary.

This is a delightful tale that explores not only the fun aspects of friends ‘camping out’ together, but learning about the exhibits at the aquarium. There is some playful interaction between the youngsters, along with a bit of sibling teasing.

Author Megan McDonald does a wonderful job detailing the various exhibits in such a way youngsters will learn right along with Stink. She combines facts with the characters’ antics for a smooth flowing story that is loaded with knowledge and laughter.

STINK AND THE SHARK SLEEPOVER is geared toward third and fourth graders, but can be enjoyed by youngsters of all ages as well as adults. Interesting facts about the aquarium life are woven throughout the story making it easy for youngsters to learn as they have fun.

ICE DOGS by Terry Lynn Johnson

Ice Dogs coverBe sure to have a nice warm throw handy when you read author Terry Lynn Johnson’s ICE DOGS no matter the season.

The author’s vivid descriptions of the Alaskan countryside will send chills down your spine with the authentic details. Johnson brings the snowy landscape to life as she takes readers on an incredible journey of survival with 14-year-old Victoria Secord, an Alaskan dogsled racers.

Johnson paints a breathtaking setting for her young adult adventure. Her eye for details and her extensive knowledge of mushers will have you experiencing the challenges Victoria faces. Johnson’s easy flowing story pulls you in and makes you feel a part of the drama.

Victoria follows in her late father’s footsteps, continuing to compete in dogsled races. On a routine outing to visit a neighboring musher, Victoria encounters Chris, a city boy who has been injured in a snowmobile wreck. Chris says he lives nearby so Victoria decides to take him home on her dog sled.

A short time later the pair become lost in the forest after Chris directs Victoria down an unfamiliar path only to discover he doesn’t remember his way home. When a blizzard strikes it’s up to Victoria to use all of the survival skills her father taught her to keep herself, her dogs and Chris alive and find their way home.

Johnson combines her knowledge of dog sledding with a touching story to keep readers quickly turning the pages to find out what happens next. The story flows at a steady pace and is filled with suspense. Johnson does an excellent job showing the deep and meaningful bond between a musher and their magnificent dogs.

The characters are realistic and well-developed. While geared for readers in grades four and up, ICE DOGS is an enthralling read for all ages. This awe-inspiring story will capture your heart. It’s a must read for dog lovers and non-dog lovers alike.

Sunday Salon: Silence of the Wolf and Blindsided

Can you believe we’ve come to the final Sunday Salon of March?

I don’t know about where you are, but for me the weather isn’t feeling much like spring yet. I keep hoping the sun will come out and the temperature will go up at least a few degrees.

This week for Sunday Salon I have an interesting paranormal romance to share with you and a fun women’s fiction audio. One of the things I enjoy about author Terry Spear’s paranormal books is that she makes them so realistic and she always has an intriguing plot to keep you guessing. I enjoy author Fern Michaels women’s fiction series for the well-blended characters and crazy antics she combines.

Top off that latest cup of coffee, find a comfortable chair, prop your feet up and relax. It’s time to discuss the books we’ve read or listened to lately.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF by Terry Spear

Silence of the Wolf coverAnyone who skips over author Terry Spear’s Heart of the Wolf series because it’s listed as a paranormal romance is missing out on stories packed with depth and intrigue, fascinating characters, stirring surroundings, and heartwarming relationships.

In the latest installment in the series, SILENCE OF THE WOLF, Spear tackles issues of sibling rivalry, family outcast, and finding acceptance. She shows how some families pull together giving love and support, while others turn on each other thinking only of themselves.

Since the death of her parents, Elizabeth Wildwood has been on her own. Her half-brother and uncle want nothing to do with her because of her ‘mixed’ half-wolf, half-coyote blood. She is willing to risk everything, including her life, to get the evidence of who killed her parents.

Elizabeth ventures into gray wolf territory for the evidence and to write an article on the Silver Town Ski Resort. She finds the town is wolf-run by the Silver brothers and their pack. Her encounter with sub-leader Tom Silver is life changing.

The last thing Tom Silver is interested in is finding a mate and settling down like his brothers. When he has to escort Elizabeth to the slopes for her article, he discovers her scent and memory linger with him long after she’s gone.

When it appears Elizabeth’s life is in danger, Tom and his family are there to protect and help her. It’s a strange new concept for Elizabeth to have someone in her corner. She has to discover who killed her parents and if she can trust someone loves her for who she really is.

The story is heartwarming and funny. It’s filled with suspense and steamy romance. It’s a mesmerizing story of love, family and friendship that will have you believing in wolf shifters. The characters are likable and realistic. The story moves at a quick pace and is hard to put down. Spear has incorporated her vast research of wolves into this tantalizing tale. Her rich descriptions of the setting brings the town to life.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF is the 13th installment in the Heart of the Wolf series, but can be read on its own. New readers to the series won’t be left in the dark and returning fans will be able to catch up with old friends from past installments.

The romance is sizzling, the characters charismatic, and the plot suspenseful for an entertaining, heart-pounding, page turner that will hold you captive until the very end.

BLINDSIDED by Fern Michaels

Blindsided coverLaughter, excitement, suspense, a bit of danger and a lot of revenge run amuck when the ladies gather at Pinewood.

The ladies of author Fern Michaels’ Sisterhood series aren’t ones to fade quietly into the background. Though it has been awhile since the ladies were called upon to dispense their own brand of justice, they are always ready for a new challenge.

Narrator Laural Merlington does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. Her distinct mannerisms and vocalizations have you believing there’s more than one narrator. She does a great job of switching not only genders, but vast age differences. Merlington adds enjoyable dimensions to the characters and enhances the author’s story.

This go-around only the older members of the Sisterhood are called into action at the request of Maggie Spritzer, an honorary member of the Sisterhood and former editor-in-chief of The Post. Maggie senses something is not right with two Maryland judges. She believes the judges, identical twins Celeste and Eunice Ciprani, have a moneymaking racket going on by sending youthful offenders to ruthless boot camps on charges that deserve far lesser sentences.

Powerful and merciless, the Ciprani twins run their town with an iron fist. Taking them down won’t be easy, but then the Sisterhood has never backed away from a challenge. Maggie, Myra, Annie and the gang come up with a plan that brings justice to the innocent and deals severely with the very guilty judges.

Once again Michaels has crafted a story of suspense, intrigue and laughter. The main characters are well-developed and likable, while the villains possess all the traits you hate for a well-balanced group. The story flows smoothly and quickly with a few surprises along the way and a good blend of humor woven throughout.

The steadfast band of friends once again continue their renowned brand of dispensing justice for an entertaining and spellbinding story.

BLINDSIDED is the 22nd installment in the Sisterhood series. It can be read/listened to on its own. However, to get a better grasp of the Sisterhood and their actions, a few earlier installments in the series should be read/listened to.

This story will have you laughing, holding your breath and cheering for the underdog. Can’t wait to see what happens next with the Sisterhood.
