Colorful Calendar … Killer Look

Creativity sometimes takes a back seat when it comes to getting organized and keeping track of the events of your day.

That doesn’t have to be the case if you get organized with an UNDATEDCOLORING ACADEMIC AGENDA from Action Publishing Inc. While this calendar is designed for students, it can be easily adapted to work for anyone in all walks of life. They also offer a selection of day planners too.

Having just launched my own book tour service for authors, I’ve been looking for a calendar that would help keep me super organized. I needed a way to look at a month at a glance, as well as have space for day to day activities. When I saw the COLORING ACADEMIC AGENDA, I knew it would work perfectly for me. It also offers me a way to be a bit creative while going over my activities.

With the adult coloring book phase popping up everywhere, the good folks at Action Publishing have incorporated a touch of whimsy into their calendars. There’s a full page to color opposite the month-at-a-glance page, as well as small coloring opportunities throughout the daily pages.

The bonus to me is the huge amount of space you have for the week’s events. There’s also a space to track a task; a goals/notes section; my time space; and a spot you can use to sketch, jot a note or keep a journal. In addition, there’s a vocabulary word of the week, useful tips and tools section, and a weekly activity to help strengthen your life skills. I won’t even go into all the neat information listed in the back of the calendar.

The calendar comes undated so you can begin using it anytime of the year. Spiral bound makes the calendar easy to layout flat to use or fold over as you would a composition book. The 8 ½-inch by 11-inch size makes keeping track of daily events much easier providing lots of writing space.

The pages of the calendar aren’t glossy making it easy to write on. I added sticky notes over the weekdays on my monthly calendar. This allows me to move things around without having to erase if an activity changes. When the activity is done, I then write it on the month page with any extra notes I have.

I’m just getting my calendar set up, but I can see it’s going to be an invaluable tool. Not only can I keep track of my daily schedule and look at what’s set for the month, but I can also dabble with a bit of coloring to help de-stress the day.

MY THOUGHTS:

With a Linda Fairstein novel you not only get a tantalizing murder mystery, but you also get tidbits of history and a tour of interesting spots throughout New York City. Fairstein’s latest mystery combines murder with the glitz and glamour of the New York fashion district.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat does an excellent job giving distinct voices to the various characters. Her unique vocals and manners are spot on when highlighting the ups and downs of the characters’ emotions. Her cadence enhances the story.

Fairstein has created realistic characters that are well-developed and likable. The interaction between the characters adds depth to the story. The secondary characters are colorful and add a bit of drama.

The New York setting adds intrigue and is virtually a character in its self. Through Fairstein’s vivid descriptions the garment district comes to life throughout the novel. With an eye for detail, Fairstein pulls readers/listeners into the story with touches of clothing history and New York’s place in all things fashion.

The story has enough twists and turns to have you changing your mind about the killer’s identity as fast as super models change for the runway. Fairstein combines her protagonist’s anxiety from a previous story with current events to show her development. New readers won’t be left in the dark about the problems causing Alexandra’s condition as Fairstein fills in the blanks enough to make this a stand-alone read.

KILLER LOOK is a fast-pace thriller filled with suspense and a shocking surprise ending you won’t see coming.

The author’s characters are well-developed and realistic. Their interactions are plausible. She shows a vulnerable side to her characters, but also gives them strength and determination in other areas readers/listeners can relate to.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat does a great job of bringing the characters to life through her various vocals. Her mannerisms enhance the story and adds to the emotional elements.

The rugged setting of a national park draws you in as the action of the story unfolds. The author weaves the strips of mystery into an entertaining tale.

The story moves at a good pace as you fit the pieces together.

Narrator Khristine Hvam does a good job of bringing all the emotions to the foreground. Her various vocals gives each character a distinct sound.

The small town atmosphere is charming and inviting. Through detail descriptions and an eye for detail, the author puts you in the middle of the scene. The story moves at a good pace as it draws you in. With a few twists and turns along the way, readers/listeners pull for Grace to find her path.

The story also deals with how a death of a child impacts the entire family for years to come. With a mix of humor and romance, the story will touch your heart and encourage you to recall fond memories of your yesteryears. The tidbits of grammar and how it should be used at the beginning of each chapter is an added bonus.

TERMINAL CITY by Linda Fairstein

A book by author Linda Fairstein is like getting two stories in one. She writes a suspenseful murder mystery in her latest release, TERMINAL CITY, but also includes a fascinating history of Grand Central Terminal in New York City.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat once again brings protagonist Alexander ‘Alex’ Cooper to life, along with a cast of returning regulars and a nice mix of new characters. Rosenblat explores the wide range of emotions of the characters with her mannerism and cadence. Her interruption enhances the already intriguing story.

Grand Central Terminal is in the heart of New York City and is the center focus of Fairstein’s latest thriller. From the world’s largest Tiffany clock to hidden underground systems, Grand Central Terminal plays a major character in this action-packed mystery. Fairstein’s extensive research of the more than 100 year old terminal adds history and intrigue to the story. She gives listeners/readers the feel of the area through her vivid descriptions and eye for details.

A young woman’s naked body is found in the tower suite of the prestigious Waldorf Astoria. Sunday Salon: Stink and the Shark Sleepover, and Ice Dogs

Welcome to the first Sunday Salon of April. I hope the weather is

treating you well and acting more like spring than the icy fingers of winter.


For today’s Sunday Salon I’m talking about books for the youth. Since I don’t have children, I’ve never been one to check out children’s books – until the last few years. I have several young cousins who enjoy reading and I want to encourage that so I now look at children’s books.

What I’ve found has surprised me. I made the mistake of thinking children’s books could only appeal to a child. Boy, was I wrong. I’ve discovered that the children’s books are both interesting and entertaining for adults too. While some are geared to youngsters in their use of language, they still tell wonderful stories adults can enjoy.

One of the books I want to share today is geared toward youngsters in the third and fourth grade level, and the other is geared toward fourth grade and up. I must say, I learned a great deal from both books and would highly recommend them.

Now, refill your coffee cup, sit back and relax. It’s time to talk BOOKS!!!

STINK AND THE SHARK SLEEPOVER by Megan McDonald

Spending a night at an aquarium leads to an exciting adventure of fun, knowledge, and scary moments in the latest installment in the Stink Books.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat does a great job of bringing this children’s tale to life. Her mannerisms and cadence captures the energy of this rowdy group of youngsters, along with the calm adults on hand.

Stink Moody’s family won tickets to a sleepover at the local aquarium. Mom, Dad, Stink and sister Judy are joined by Stink’s friends, Sophie and Webster, for the overnight exploit.

At the aquarium the youngsters explore a number of exhibits as they participate in a scavenger hunt. Afterwards, the group hears the tale of the Bloody Mary Vampire Squid around an artificial campfire. Later the kids do a little exploring on their own coming face to face with Bloody Mary.

This is a delightful tale that explores not only the fun aspects of friends ‘camping out’ together, but learning about the exhibits at the aquarium. There is some playful interaction between the youngsters, along with a bit of sibling teasing.

Author Megan McDonald does a wonderful job detailing the various exhibits in such a way youngsters will learn right along with Stink. She combines facts with the characters’ antics for a smooth flowing story that is loaded with knowledge and laughter.

STINK AND THE SHARK SLEEPOVER is geared toward third and fourth graders, but can be enjoyed by youngsters of all ages as well as adults. Interesting facts about the aquarium life are woven throughout the story making it easy for youngsters to learn as they have fun.

ICE DOGS by Terry Lynn Johnson

Be sure to have a nice warm throw handy when you read author Terry Lynn Johnson’s ICE DOGS no matter the season.

The author’s vivid descriptions of the Alaskan countryside will send chills down your spine with the authentic details. Johnson brings the snowy landscape to life as she takes readers on an incredible journey of survival with 14-year-old Victoria Secord, an Alaskan dogsled racers. 

Johnson paints a breathtaking setting for her young adult adventure. Her eye for details and her extensive knowledge of mushers will have you experiencing the challenges Victoria faces. Johnson’s easy flowing story pulls you in and makes you feel a part of the drama.

Victoria follows in her late father’s footsteps, continuing to compete in dogsled races. On a routine outing to visit a neighboring musher, Victoria encounters Chris, a city boy who has been injured in a snowmobile wreck. Chris says he lives nearby so Victoria decides to take him home on her dog sled.

A short time later the pair become lost in the forest after Chris directs Victoria down an unfamiliar path only to discover he doesn’t remember his way home. When a blizzard strikes it’s up to Victoria to use all of the survival skills her father taught her to keep herself, her dogs and Chris alive and find their way home.

Johnson combines her knowledge of dog sledding with a touching story to keep readers quickly turning the pages to find out what happens next. The story flows at a steady pace and is filled with suspense. Johnson does an excellent job showing the deep and meaningful bond between a musher and their magnificent dogs.

The characters are realistic and well-developed. While geared for readers in grades four and up, ICE DOGS is an enthralling read for all ages. This awe-inspiring story will capture your heart. It’s a must read for dog lovers and non-dog lovers alike.

The Whole Enchilada and The Renegades

Today I have two amazing audios to share with you that are complete opposites, but both outstanding in their own field.

Both authors are favorites of mine. I’ve followed the work of the first author for quite so time and always get a laugh out of her stories. The second author I began following just a few years ago and eagerly look forward to his books as the intensity holds me spellbound. First up is from the cozy mystery series by Diane Mott Davidson, followed by the adventure, adrenaline-propelled series by Tom Young.

THE WHOLE ENCHILADA by Diane Mott Davidson

All is going well for caterer Goldy Schulz as her son and his friend, Drew, celebrate with a joint birthday party, but then Drew’s mother, Holly, collapses and dies.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat brings the characters to life in author Diane Mott Davidson’s THE WHOLE ENCHILADA, the 17th installment in her Culinary Mystery Series. Rosenblat draws listeners in as she expresses the vast array of emotions woven throughout the story. Her cadence is crisp and clear holding you spellbound until the end.

At first glance it appears Goldy’s best friend died of a heart attack. Later at Holly’s home, Goldy steps to get a note on the back deck and it collapses sending her into the frigid water below. Shaken, but not badly hurt, Goldy then learns that Holly had been poisoned and the deck sabotaged. 

Days later another caterer, one that was trying to imitate Goldy, is attacked and killed. When Goldy herself is attacked outside her home, she realizes the killer thinks she knows more than she does. Determined to find Holly’s killer, Goldy begins searching for answers

Davidson continues to develop and evolve her main characters in the Culinary Mystery Series so that returning readers/listeners get to know them better with each book. New fans are not lose as there is enough background information to keep you on track. This book can be enjoyed as a standalone. The characters are well-balanced, realistic and likable. The secondary characters always add a flare to the story. 

THE WHOLE ENCHILADA moves at a steady pace with Davidson’s protagonist mulling over the ‘whys’ and ‘who could haves’ in a pragmatic manner. There are twists and surprises along the way. In addition, Davidson includes many of the delicious recipes Goldy and her crew create throughout the story. This is a story that is sure to whet your reading appetite, as well as your taste buds.

THE RENEGADES by Tom Young

Listening to a book by author Tom Young stirs strong emotions. While it is a story of fiction, the author’s extensive military background gives credibility to what he writes. The pain, suffering, torture, loss of life and dedication have elements of truth to them.

Having said that and the fact that I’m not big on war-theme stories, I do highly recommend THE RENEGADES.

Narrator Scott Brick brings the story, people and setting to life. His deep throaty voice gives depth to Young’s words. Brick’s cadence is alluring as he pulls you into the middle of a battle zone and breaks your heart with the tenderness of his soothing voice when emotions involve the young and innocent victims. Then he has you on the edge of your seat as the action gets underway.

Afghan Air Force adviser Lieutenant Colonel Michael Parson and his interpreter, Sergeant Major Sophia Gold, are once again reunited following a devastating earthquake in Afghanistan. They are on hand to assist with aid and rescue efforts. However, a Taliban splinter group Black Crescent, is making life difficult for the workers. They are shooting medical works, downing helicopters, and threatening anyone who takes aid. But worst of all - they’re kidnapping young boys and making them become suicide bombers.

Parson, Gold and Parson’s Afghan aircrew scramble to provide aid, along with the other workers, in everyway they can. Discovering a way to possible locate the leader of the splinter group, Gold goes against Parson’s orders. Following her lead could stops the new group or get her killed.

THE RENEGADES is action-packed from beginning to end. It’s adrenaline-driven with so many twists, turns, highs and lows it feels like a roller coaster ride. The story flows smoothly, but quickly with moments of tenderness and concern woven throughout, as well as snippets of humor.

The characters are engaging, realistic and well-developed. Their interaction with one another is plausible. Young’s eye for authentic detail adds depth to the story and places the reader/listener in the midst of the action. The story will leave you breathless, exhausted and eager for more.

Having read/listened to THE RENEGADES (or any story by Young), you come away not only having finished a fascinating story, but learned a great deal about American servicemen and women, the trials they face overseas and their dedication. Young entertains with his words, but also educates and informs.

This is the third book featuring Parson and Gold, but can be enjoyed as a standalone. But be warned, after an introduction to Parson and Gold you’ll want to know more.

Mac And Cheese and Death Angel

Do I have a couple of amazing books to share with you today. Of course you know they’re going to be completely different genres, but I think you could ‘read them’ together - so to speak. See if you agree.

THE MAC & CHEESE COOKBOOK by Allison Arevalo and Erin Wade

I must admit the cover of THE MAC & CHEESE COOKBOOK captured my attention the moment I saw it. Doesn’t it look yummy? Visions of mouth-watering dishes of mac and cheese sprang to mind and I had to know more.

I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed by the cookbook, quite the opposite. I found this charming cookbook to be packed with delicious recipes, easy instructions, gorgeous color photos, and extremely helpful tips.

Authors (Chefs) Allison Arevalo and Erin Wade have compiled tasty recipes that will have you eager to try all 50 of them. Each recipes is written in simple, easy steps with a bit of information about the dish. In addition, many are accompanied by a beautiful full page color photo of the completed dish. There’s also a section on selecting the right noodles and how to prepare them properly.

A highlight of the book for me was the step-by-step instructions and photos on how to prepare the mac sauce - the base of each recipe. The authors also note problems that can be encountered preparing the sauce and the simple solutions to resolve these issues.

Each recipe also includes a beer and wine pairing to enrich the meal. To help even more, the authors have included recipes for fun side dishes and desserts to compliment the mac and cheese.

Some of the recipes are: Trailer Mac, Mac & Blue, Shepherd’s Mac, Winter Citrus Salad, Peanut Butter Pie, and Dessert Mac. I tried the Vermont White Cheddar Mac and was delighted with my results. The recipe was easy to follow, the instructions helpful and the end results delicious. While this dish took a bit longer than opening a box of mac and cheese, it was well worth the effort. Once the simple mac sauce is mastered, the recipes are a breeze.

Mac and cheese, the ultimate comfort food, can be prepared every day of the month with this enticing cookbook and never be the same. If you grew up loving mac and cheese, this is a must have for your kitchen.

Arevalo and Wade are the owners/operators of the wildly popular San Francisco Bay Area macaroni and cheese restaurant known as HOMEROOM. A school theme is sprinkled throughout the restaurant and the entire menu is under ten dollars.

DEATH ANGEL by Linda Fairstein

Combining a grizzly murder, buried secrets and the luscious layout of New York’s Central Park prove to be a good match for author Linda Fairstein’s latest Alex Cooper thriller, DEATH ANGEL.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat does an excellent job giving distinct voices to the returning characters of Fairstein’s series, as well as new ones. Her cadence pulls you in holding you captive as she vocalizes the depth of Fairstein’s words. Rosenblat has you gasping for breath right along with the characters.

When a young woman’s body is pulled from a lake in Central Park, law enforcement is put on alert to find the killer and make the park safe once again. As Assistant District Attorney Alex ‘Coop’ Cooper and Detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace being looking into the case, they discover the trail leads to the famous apartment building, The Dakota, located nearby. Piecing the bits of evidence together, they soon discover it could have connections to a cold case involving a missing child that rivaled the Lindbergh Kidnapping.

Meanwhile, Coop and Chapman have their hands full with a more personal matter. They’re about to be pulled into a scandal involving a judge on the verge of losing it that could cost both of them their jobs. Coop is determined to help Chapman no matter the cost as a few sparks of attraction between the two ignite.

Once again Fairstein places her characters in the middle of a bizarre crime scene and leads readers on a merry chase to find the killer. The well-developed characters continue to evolve with each new installment in the series. They’re realistic and likable.

DEATH ANGEL moves at a steady, but smooth pace. It’s action-driven with twists and surprises along the way to keep you on your toes. Readers new to the series won’t be left in the dark with prior references, while returning fans will enjoy the continuing growth of the lead characters.

Fairstein’s vivid and detailed descriptions of Central Park places the reader/listener in the middle of the beautiful backdrop. Her eye for authentic detail enhances the story and brings the setting to life. Reading/listening to DEATH ANGEL is like taking a virtual trip to Central Park with a side stop for a mysterious murder or two.

Night Watch by Linda Fairstein

What was suppose to be a quiet romantic vacation with her lover in France turned out to be anything but.

Manhattan Prosecutor Alexandra ‘Alex’ Cooper’s week started off well enough with her arrival to see her boyfriend, famed restaurateur Luc Rouget. When a young woman is found murdered, the only piece of evidence leads back to Luc.

As the investigation begins Alex has to return to New York to handle a high profile case. The head of the World Economic Bureau, Mohammed Gil-Daisin, has been charged with raping a hotel maid. Working to shift through a web of lies, Alex learns of a connection between Luc and Mohammed.

Meanwhile, Luc arrives in New York to oversee the opening of a new high-end restaurant. When a second body is found linked to him, Alex realizes she really doesn’t know Luc at all.

The more she works to conclude her case, the more connections and surprises she discovers. There are twists and turns along the way in both cases to keep you guessing.

Author Linda Fairstein has taken national headlines and turned them into a gripping, heart-pounding book. Her characters are well developed. The interaction and camaraderie between Alex and her two co-workers, Mike and Mercer, will have you in stitches at times.

Narrator Barbara Rosenblat does a superb job bringing the story to life with the varied personalities. She captures the accents beautifully and is able to switch genders with ease. Her ability to portray the characters’ emotions enhances the story.

NIGHT WATCH is intriguing with surprises that take listeners in new directions. Great detail is given to the behind-the-scenes of restaurants, as well as the history of Prohibition in New York.

This is the 14th installment in the Alex Cooper crime series, but can be read/listened to on it’s own. Fairstein gives a look at what the headlines would be if Alex was on the case.
