SYNOPSIS:

From the author of the international bestseller The 100-Year-Old-Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, a brilliant satirical novel set in modern Sweden—a story of idealism and fanaticism, gangsters and entrepreneurs, sensationalism and spirituality, that explores the values that matter in contemporary life.
In a former brothel turned low-rent hotel, the lives of three unusual strangers—a former female priest, recently fired from her church; the ruined grandson of an ex-millionaire working as a receptionist; and Killer-Anders, a murderer newly released from prison—accidently collide with darkly hilarious results.
Seeing a lucrative opportunity in Killer-Anders, the unlikely trio form an unusual new business. The Priest and The Receptionist will handle strategy and public relations, and coordinate Killer-Anders’ “missions.” Using the media’s obsessive need for sensational, headline-making stories to advertise their talent’s superb “skill,” they quickly build a clientele of rich Swedish gangsters. Suddenly, they’re making an altogether different kind of killing of their own.
But when Killer-Anders begins asking deeper questions about purpose and meaning, his curiosity leads him to an unexpected discovery: he finds Jesus. Desperate to save the money machine they’ve built, The Priest and The Receptionist devise an audacious plan utilizing Killer-Anders’ newfound and decidedly fervent faith.
Mischievous yet big-hearted, filled with Jonas Jonasson’s trenchant humor and delightful twists, Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All is a delightful comic adventure that reminds us it’s never to late to start over—and to discover what truly matters.

This is one of those zany books that makes you shake your head as you smile at the craziness that falls in place to create a delightful story.

Narrator Peter Kenny does an excellent job giving unique voices to each of the characters. His cadence and timing is spot on. His interruptions of the actions and emotions enhances this entertainment story.

The author has created eccentric characters that draw you in quickly. The characters’ madcap ways will hold you spellbound as you try to guess what’s next.

The story moves quickly with unexpected twists and turns that will keep you laughing. You’ll find yourself cheering for this little group of misfits as they take on the world in their own bizarre way.

This is an amusing story of three unlikely people who come together and create their own unique business and family. Filled with satire, lovable characters, humor, adventure and hope, it’s a story you don’t want to miss. I would highly recommend enjoying both audio and print formats of this fascinating story!

The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son on Life, Love, and Loss

The name Vanderbilt brings to mind wealth and fame and to some that automatically translates to happiness.

However, in THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES Gloria Vanderbilt tells her son, Anderson Cooper, some of the heartaches and sorrows she has faced growing up dubbed ‘the poor, little rich girl.’ Thought emails the mother and son shared over a year period listeners learn money truly does not buy happiness and love. The story is read by Gloria and Anderson giving listeners an added bonus.

After his mother suffered a brief serious illness at age 91, Anderson resolved to get to know her better. They began corresponding through emails which lead them to have more in depth and honest discussions than they had ever had. Anderson questioned his mother about her childhood and the choices she had made along the way.

THE RAINBOW COMES AND GOES cover a year-long discussion between mother and son that brought them to a closer understanding of each other. In their own voices, the two share their sorrows and disappointments, along with fleeting moments of happiness. Gloria talks at length about growing up without a father or father figure in her life, her unresolved feelings toward her mother, and what life was like for a young girl thrown into the spotlight when family members fought in court to control her inheritances.

This is not a story about having it all. It’s a touching, tender story of a young girl searching for love and family, her drive to live, and the life she created. In addition, it’s a story of a grown son’s love and admiration for his mother and the driving spirit that pushes him forward.

Through the telling of triumphs and tragedies, the story stresses the need for parents and children to share more between themselves. The sometimes humorous and often very candid private thoughts reveal a lot remains to be shared if only one will pursue it.

An inspiring memoir that might just change the way you view people, especially those who have it all. This is a lovely reminder to connect with those you love before it’s too late.

Violent Crimes by Phillip Margolin

What starts out as a simple case of defending a client for a bar room brawl leads to fraud, conspiracy and murder in Phillip Margolin’s latest mesmerizing tale, VIOLENT CRIMES.

Narrator Therese Plummer does a superb job highlighting the various characters with their own unique voice. Her cadence and tone matches the highs and lows of the story. Plummer brings the emotions to the surface as she portrays the characters enhancing this fascinating story.

Veteran attorney Amanda Jaffe is asked by her friend Christine Larson to defend a fellow colleague, Tom Beatty, in a bar room brawl case. Tom is ex-military suffering from PTSD. Shortly after Amanda gets Tom released from the charge, Christine is found brutally beaten to death in Tom’s bedroom.

Amanda once again tried to help Tom and discovers Christine was looking into possible fraud involving her boss Dale Masterson at the law firm of Masterson, Hamilton, Rickman and Thomas where she and Tom worked. As the business practices of the law firm come under surveillance, Dale Masterson is found beaten to death in his mansion. Dale’s son, Brandon, is seen fleeing the house and is arrested for the murder. Amanda is hired to represent Brandon even though he confesses to killing his father for dealing with questionable clients that he claims are destroying the earth.

Amanda begins to think there could be a connection between Dale and Christine’s murders. The more she digs deeper, the darker the situation becomes. Amanda puts her life in danger determined to find Christine’s killer and find justice for her two clients as she wonders if one of them really is a killer.

This is a fast-pace story that has several plots going on at the same time before coming together in a surprised ending. The suspense and tension will keep you wondering what will happen next. While you might be able to figure out a few of the main bad guys, the author throws in a few twists to surprise you.

The characters are realistic and well-developed. The protagonist is a strong, determined and feisty female, but shows a vulnerable side as well.

VIOLENT CRIMES is the fifth installment in the Amanda Jaffe series, but can be read/listened to on its own. Filled with intrigue and anticipation, this story has a good blend of action, romance and courtroom procedures for an entertaining tale.

The Perfect Stranger: Kiss and Tell

I have two awesome books to share with you today. Hope you enjoy.

THE PERFECT STRANGER by Wendy Corsi Staub

The Perfect StrangerMany find blogging a great way to relax and connect with others resulting in happy experiences. Author Wendy Corsi Staub takes blogging to a darker level in her latest release, THE PERFECT STRANGER, the second installment in her Cyber Predator series.

Narrator Allyson Ryan does a superb job giving each character their own unique voice. Her mannerisms enhances the emotions of the characters and adds depth to the story. Her cadence heightens the suspense of the story.

A group of women come together online to encourage and support each other in their fight against cancer. They find solace, sharing things about themselves they can’t share with people in their lives. Several of the women draw closer, forming their own little online group.

When one of the bloggers is killed, an apparent victim of a burglary, the others decide to meet for her funeral. It’s the first time Landry, Elena and Kay have seen each other in person. They had hoped that Jaycee would join them, but she doesn’t. Having never seen a photo of Jaycee, the trio doesn’t know she’s also at the funeral but not speaking to anyone.

The trio discusses Meredith’s death and they secretly begin to wonder if the killer could be one of them. As paranoia sets in, the author increases the suspense making it plausible anyone of the group could be the killer. Add to that Jaycee’s mysterious actions and shocking background, the suspect list grows. In addition, Meredith’s daughter begins to suspect her father’s recent actions.

The story moves at a good pace with adrenaline fueled moments and unexpected twists. The characters are realistic. The author has done her research in relating the mixed bag of emotions the characters express dealing with cancer. The author also points out the highs and lows of giving out too much personal data online.

THE PERFECT STRANGER is a suspenseful novel dealing with problems readers/listeners can relate to and highlights complications an online presence can create, if one is not careful. This story will have you re-evaluating just how much information you share online.

* I had the good fortunate to begin reading this book in paperback and then finishing it by listening to the audio version. It was nice enjoying the book in both formats and I would recommend both.

KISS AND TELL by Fern Michaels

Kiss and Tell coverWhen a book series has a long run life, you know there will have to be changes to keep the storyline fresh.

Author Fern Michaels has done that in her Sisterhood series. Her latest release, KISS AND TELL, is a product of those changes. This continues to be a fun series, but missing some of the delightful characters from the earlier installments. With this book, Michaels brings a few of those characters back briefly.

Narrator Laural Merlington does an excellent job giving distinct voices to these characters – young and old, male and female. The modulation of her voice puts the right spin on the characters’ emotions. She captures the idiosyncrasy of each character in such a manner to enhance the story.

A number of anonymous emails suggesting shady deals leads Myra Rutledge and Annie de Silva to snoop around a wealthy assisted-living facility. They discover the dealings involve an investment broker who is running a Ponzi scheme. With the help of a few of the old gang, the ladies once again right the wrongs.

During their mission to bring the investor down, Myra encounters her own heart break at home. While the problem wasn’t solved, there was a hint of more to be resolved concerning the matter. In addition, the author gives a lead way into a new series featuring the men of the Sisterhood. Between the Sisterhood and the Brotherhood, the bad guys don’t stand a chance.

KISS AND TELL is the 23rd installment in the Sisterhood series and can be read/listened to on its own. However, I would recommend reading/listening to the series in order to get the full pleasure of the characters as they grow and develop. This is another delightful story of a wrong being righted, just miss all the sisters being involved.

Kiss and Tell by Fern Michaels, Sisterhood Series Book #23, Performed by Laural Merlington, Brilliance Audio, @2014, ISBN: 978-1480566323, Unabridged, 8 Discs, Listening Time: 9 Hours and 28 Minutes

FTC Full Disclosure - This audio book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope I’ve enticed you to check out these two books further. Both are available in book and audio formats. May your Sunday be a day of joy and resting (with a good book handy, of course). Have you listened to any audio books lately? What book are you currently enjoying or what book do you plan to read next?

Eyes on You by Kate White

Eyes on You coverJournalist Robin Trailer appears to have finally achieved success and then it begins to crumble away from her in Kate White’s EYES ON YOU.

Narrator Abby Craden brings the characters to life in this edge-of-your-seat thriller. Her mannerisms and cadence captures the emotions and enhances the suspense surrounding the protagonist.

Robin has had a rough few years after losing her cheating husband and her job. Now she’s worked her way up to co-anchor of a popular TV show and just published a book that is climbing the charts. When strange things begin to happen, Robin isn’t worried at first. But as the stunts escalate, she realizes someone isn’t just out to get her job – but her life as well.

Set on clearing her name, Robin draws a small group of friends closer. But as the same time she begins to wonder who she can truly trust.

The author has created a story filled with psychological suspense where every character appears to be the culprit. The twists and turns will keep you guessing and hold you spellbound until the end.

The setting of a TV talk show adds drama and intrigue to the mix. The characters are well-developed and realistic. The story flows quickly as you try to sort out the clues.

EYES ON YOU will have you second-guessing your pick for the killer as the stunts accelerate to murder. Fascinating and suspenseful until the end.

The Old Blue Line and The Cursed

I have two enjoyable audio books to share with you today. One is a novella, the 15.5 installment in the Joanna Brady series, and the other is the 12th installment in the Krewe of Hunters series.

THE OLD BLUE LINE by J.A. Jance

The Old Blue Line coverThis interesting novella by author J.A. Jance ends all too quickly. It’s an intriguing story you can easily get caught up in.

Narrator James Eckhouse does a great job giving the various characters their own unique voice. His interruption of the characters’ emotions and the setting enhances the author’s already captivating story.

Butch Dixon, owner of the Roundhouse Bar and Grill, finds himself the prime suspect in his ex-wife’s murder. He hasn’t seen or talk to his ex in quite some time, but evidence is showing a different story.

Turning to an old friend for help, Butch soon finds himself being helped by member of the Old Blue Line. He learns the group of retired law enforcement and legal professionals may be old, but they’re tenacious, cunning and a force that gets to the truth.

THE OLD BLUE LINE can be listened to/read on its own. For fans of Jance’s Sheriff Joanna Brady series, this will be an added bonus learning a bit of backstory about the sheriff’s husband before they were married.

It’s a fast moving story with well-developed characters. The story flows smoothly and the author’s vivid descriptions places you in the middle of the action.

The Old Blue Line by J.A. Jance, Joanna Brady Series Book #15.5, Performed by James Eckhouse, Harper Audio, @2014, ASIN: B00KQTOMAO, Unabridged, Digital Downloadable, Listening Time: 1 Hour and 56 Minutes.

FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this audio book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

THE CURSED by Heather Graham

The Cursed coverA haunted house in Key West, a notorious smuggling ring, long-lost treasure, and paranormal investigating federal agents make for an intriguing thriller in author Heather Graham’s THE CURSED.

Luke Daniels does a superb job narrating this suspenseful mystery. His cadence and mannerisms give each character their own unique voice to the point it seems there’s more than one reader. His interruption adds depth to the drama of this fascinating story.

Hannah O’Brien owns and operates a B&B in Key West and has the unique ability to not only see the two resident ghosts, but communicate with them as well. After a man is murdered in the alley behind her B&B, he comes to Hannah as a ghost asking for help.

Meanwhile, FBI Agent Dallas Samson makes Hannah’s life difficult when he begins questioning how she knows the things she knows. Dallas knows the dead man was an uncover agent trying to get inside information on a smuggling ring known as Los Lobos, the wolves.

It turns out Hannah has a connection to Los Lobos, since their leader believes there’s a long-lost treasure hidden in her B&B and he will stop at nothing to get it. Things really heat up when Hannah’s cousin Kelsey and her partner arrive in town. They are members of the FBI’s Krewe of Hunters, an elite unit of paranormal investigators. It seems Dallas has been on their radar for some time and there may be more to him than he’s telling.

While this is a paranormal mystery featuring ghosts, the author presents it in such a manner it will quickly seem plausible. The characters are well-developed and likable. The story flows at a steady pace and smoothly.

THE CURSED is a good mix of suspense, Key West legends, humor, murder, and romance blended together for a captivating story. Even though this is the 12th installment in the Krewe of Hunters series, it can be listened to/read on its own with new readers being left in the dark.

The Cursed by Heather Graham, Krewe of Hunters Book #12, Performed by Luke Daniels, Brilliance Audio, @2014, ISBN: 978-1469221755, Unabridged, 8 Discs, Listening Time: 9 Hours and 1 Minute

Spider Woman’s Daughter by Anne Hillerman

Spider Woman's Daughter coverIt’s rare that a series can continue in the same style and strength after the author has died and another has picked up the torch.

SPIDER WOMAN’S DAUGHTER is one of those rare books. Author Anne Hillerman expertly continues the Leaphorn and Chee series her late father, Tony Hillerman, created and beautifully wrote for so many years. This installment features Navajo Nation Police Officer Bernadette ‘Bernie’ Manualito more prominently, along with her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee.

Narrator Christina Delaine does an excellent job bringing the various characters to life and giving each their own distinct voice. Her mannerisms enhance the author’s writing and captures the listeners’ attention.

Following a routine breakfast meeting of law enforcement officers, retired Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn is shot in the restaurant parking lot. Bernie witnesses the shooting and rushes to Leaphorn. She promises him the shooter will be caught as she tries to remember as much as possible about the incident.

As a witness to the shooting, Bernie is taken off the case but continues to work behind the scenes when her husband is put in charge of the case. While keeping her promise to Leaphorn, Bernie also has to deal with her unhappy sister and ailing mother.

The story takes twists and turns before bringing all the evidence together in a heart-pounding conclusion. Throughout the story, listeners/readers are left wondering if the legendary Leaphorn will soon join his creator.

Hillerman follows in her father’s footsteps placing the listener/reader in the middle of the action. Her vivid descriptions of the Southwest setting are breathtaking. Her eye for detail showcases the rich Native American culture.

SPIDER WOMAN’S DAUGHTER continues the Leaphorn and Chee tradition with a fresh take on beloved characters.

Cut To The Bone by Jefferson Bass

Finding a story that has some bases in truth always adds a bit cut to the bone covermore depth for me. Such was the case of CUT TO THE BONE by Jefferson Bass.

Narrator Tom Stechsculte does a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. His cadence will send shivers up your spine as he voices the thoughts and actions of the killer. His mannerisms will have you smiling during the lighter moments of the story.

In the summer of 1992 the young head of the Anthropology Department at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Bill Brockton, is beginning a new research facility unlike anything in the country. The macabre research will study how a body decomposes with the help of nature.

When Brockton is called in to assist with a murder case, it becomes a case of déjà vu for the good doctor. As other bodies are soon discovered, Brockton realizes the new cases closely resemble prior cases he has worked. Soon it begins to appear Brockton himself could be a suspect in the murders. The doctor races to find what links the bodies back to him, but the killer could be closer than he images with his sights already set on those Brockton holds dear.

Author Jefferson Bass has developed realistic and likable characters, while also creating characters you loath. The author explores what makes the killer tick giving way to moments of compassion for what brought him to his madness. The secondary characters add charm, depth and a bit of humor to the story.

CUT TO THE BONE moves at a quick pace and is filled with adrenaline-laden action. The author weaves in bits of background on the characters sharing prior history breaking up the pace so the reader/listener can catch their breath. While there may be times you can guess what happens next, there’s always a few surprises still waiting to put a twist in the story.

An eye for detail, the author vividly describes the setting bringing the area to life. The seventh installment in the Body Farm series, CUT TO THE BONE is a standalone story. References to prior events are mentioned, but new fans aren’t lost not having read the earlier installments.

A gripping story of the horror that is sometimes let lose in our society. This is not a cozy murder mystery or for the faint of heart. It’s a chilling tale that will hold you mesmerized until the end.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Here I have to add a bit about the writing team that drew me to this story.

In the early 1980s Dr. Bill Bass, a world-renowned forensic anthropologist, founded the University of Tennessee’s Body Farm—the world’s first laboratory devoted to human decomposition. The Good Sister by Wendy Corsi Staub

The Good Sister CoverAt first it seems the author has multiple stories going on at the same time. Then little by little the stories begin to merge and the pieces connecting them fall in place.

Narrator Allyson Ryan breathes life into the various characters created by author Wendy Corsi Staub. She vocalizes the emotions of adults and teenagers alike giving each their own unique voice. Her mannerisms will hold you captive as you try to identify the killer.

The story begins with a mysterious notebook discovered in a hidden section of an old house. Then a lonely teenager is being bullied at a new school. From there the teenager’s mother recalls her own adolescent years at the same school. Mixed in are the thoughts and actions of the madman bent on making things right for a wrong he believes happened many years earlier.

A teenager apparently commits suicide and within days another teen takes her own life. Their only connection appears to be their parents knew each other in high school. The mother of the bullied teenager begins to worry as she was also friends with the parents of the suicide victims. The twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat as you sort through the intermingled lives of the characters and come to a heart-pounding shocking end.

Staub has crafted well-developed, complex characters. They are realistic with strengths and flaws. She does an excellent job touching on issues teenagers and parents face daily in person and online.

THE GOOD SISTER can be a bit confusing at first with several threads of the story going on, as well as a number of the characters sharing their thoughts in between the conversation. But you quickly get the rhythm of the plot and you’re hooked.

This is a tantalizing thriller filled with well-blended characters, intrigue and dark secrets from the past. You don’t want to miss this gripping tale of how far one sibling will go for another.

On Tour With J. A. Jance, A Giveaway and More

I’m thrilled to be participating in author J. A. Jance’s Partners in Crime Virtual Book Tour for her suspense/mystery release, SECOND WATCH, the 21st installment in her J. P. Beaumont series.

As part of the tour, I’m sharing my thoughts on the book, along with a first chapter excerpt and a giveaway. Though it’s not part of the tour, I’m also going to share my thoughts on a J. P. Beaumont novella release.

SECOND WATCH by J. A. Jance

Second_Watch_JA_Jance_CoverWhile I have read several of author J. A. Jance's series, I had never ventured into the world of J. P. Beaumont until I read SECOND WATCH and now I've found a new protagonist to follow.

This story not only introduced me to the various characters in Jance's latest Beaumont title, but also gave me the opportunity to have a mini ‘catch up session’ for some of the past 20 installments this protagonist has been featured in. SECOND WATCH is a great chance to find out who the players are, where they've been and why they do what they do all while they are busy solving murders and putting out fires.

Seattle investigator J. P. Beaumont is a seasoned cop, but even the toughest guys have to take time off for knee replacement surgery. Beau goes in to have both knees replaced and finds himself having strange, vivid dreams that bring up old faces of unresolved issues.

Remembering that the first homicide case he worked on was never solved, Beau is reminded by a vision of the dead girl that he made a promise to her mother to find her killer. He begins steps to reopen the case and find closure for the grieving mother and himself.

In another dream, Beau sees the platoon leader he served under during his first days in Vietnam. The man, Lennie Davis, saved his life, as well as several others in the unit before being killed. Beau never told Davis’ fiancée that he saved his life or what a great guy he was. Is it too late to bring up that past?

Beau begins to look for answers in the cold case of the murdered girl and search for Davis’ long-ago fiancée, all while recuperating from the knee surgery. As the search into the cold case turns up intriguing tidbits, it seems the killer will stop at nothing to keep the case closed some 30 years later. With unexpected twists, Beau races to put his demons to rest before more bodies are slain.

This is a thrilling story that moves at a fast pace. Bits of history and prior cases are mingled throughout, but the story flows smoothly. The characters are well-developed and realistic. The story draws you in and holds you spellbound until the end.

Jance does an excellent job weaving the two missions together that Beau has set for himself. The story flows easily between the suspenseful murder mystery and the heartwarming journey of closure from a war that many have chosen to forgot. The murder mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat in suspense, while the touching story of Davis and his fiancée will tug on your heartstrings and bring tears to your eyes.

There is an added bonus to SECOND WATCH, it’s Jance’s explanation of how this story came about. I won’t go into the details of it as I think that would spoil it. I will say, have a box of tissue handy as you come away with a better appreciation of Beau and his journey. With this story Jance stresses the importance of “it’s never too late” to keep a promise or express a heartfelt emotion. In addition, she gives a strong show of support to those men and women who served their country so long ago and to those who continue to serve now.

This is a tantalizing thriller wrapped around a heart-wrenching segment of our nation’s history and those who were and continue to be a part of it’s defense.

Now I want to share another review with you. I had the opportunity to listen to this novella by J. A. Jance shortly after I began reading SECOND WATCH. In some ways, the two stories worked well together as I read one and listened to the other.

RING IN THE DEAD by J. A. Jance

Ring in the Dead coverSometimes it’s interesting to look back to where a protagonist has been in order to better understand the place they’re currently in. Author J. A. Jance does just that in RING IN THE DEAD. She gives readers a chance to get a glimpse of her investigator J. P. Beaumont in his early years as a rookie homicide detective in her first e-original novella.

Narrator J. R. Horne does an excellent job giving voice to the realistic characters in this J. P. Beaumont novella. His cadence pulls you as the story unfolds. His mannerisms highlight the author’s writing.

Having been stuck with a rookie, seasoned detective Milton ‘Pickles’ Gurkey makes it his mission to give J. P. ‘Beau’ Beaumont a hard time learning the ropes of detective. However, when Pickles is charged with murder, it’s Beau who makes it his mission to clear his partner.

It’s a routine day when the partners stop to grab a bite to eat. During the meal, Pickles steps outside just in time to see a crime in progress. But when he goes to confront the bad guys, shots ring and he’s struck down by a heart attack. Responding officers find Pickles unconscious, a dead waitress nearby and the murder weapon in his hand. Beau knows his partner is innocent and with the help of friends on the force works to uncover the truth.

The events of that early investigation are recalled by Beau years later when Pickles’ daughter gives him a portion of a book his late partner was writing. It seems the family had blamed Beau for Pickles death until discovering the manuscript.

This novella is short, but packed with fun characters and loads of suspense. The story moves quickly and is well-developed holding your attention as you try to figure out what really happened. The author mixes mystery, suspense and personal reflection into a well-balanced story that will be hit with new readers or returning fans.
