Left at the Altar {+ Giveaway}

It’s a pleasure to welcome author Margaret Brownley to Thoughts in Progress today to talk about her latest release, LEFT AT THE ALTAR, the first installment in her Match Made in Texas series.

Margaret has graciously answered some questions about her writing. In addition, you have the chance to win a print copy of LEFT AT THE ALTAR. Please see end the of the post for more details on the giveaway. First, here’s a bit about the book.

◊Title: Left at the Altar
◊Series: A Match Made in Texas, Book #1
◊Author: Margaret Brownley
◊Pub Date: November 1, 2016
◊ISBN: 9781492608134

Welcome to Two-Time Texas:
Where tempers burn hot
Love runs deep
And a single marriage can unite a feuding town
…or tear it apart for good

In the wild and untamed West, time is set by the local jeweler…but Two-Time Texas has two: two feuding jewelers and two wildly conflicting time zones. Meg Lockwood’s marriage was supposed to unite the families and finally bring peace. But when she’s left at the altar by her no-good fiancĂ©, Meg’s dreams of dragging her quarrelsome neighbors into a ceasefire are dashed.
No wedding bells? No one-time town.
Hired to defend the groom against a breach of promise lawsuit, Grant Garrison quickly realizes that the only thing worse than small-town trouble is falling for the jilted bride. But there’s something about Meg’s sweet smile and determined grit that draws him in…even as the whole crazy town seems set on keeping them apart.

Who knew being Left at the Altar could be such sweet, clean, madcap fun?

LEFT AT THE ALTAR is available to purchase at the following sites:

Now join me in giving a warm welcome to Margaret as she answers some questions about her writing. Welcome, Margaret.

What drew you to write about the west and jewelers?

Margaret:
I love writing about the old west. That was when men were men and women were women but, as the old song goes, a cowboy wasn’t a cowboy unless he was wild, wooly and full of fleas. Of course, the heroes I write about are more likely to be tall, dark and handsome. I’m also fascinated by how the westward movement affected women and forced them to reinvent themselves to survive and even flourish.

When you think of the old West, you probably don’t think of jewelers, but most towns had at least one jeweler or watch shop. Since no standard time existed before 1883, local time was usually determined by the jeweler. Some towns, like the fictional town of Two-Time in my story, had more than one jeweler and this often resulted in more than one-time zone. A town in Kansas reportedly had seven. Talk about confusion!

In Left at the Altar, there are two feuding jewelers who each insist that they alone have the right time. A marriage was supposed to bring the two families together, but everything that could go wrong, does.

What type of research did you do for this book?

Margaret:
I did tons of research on clocks, watches, and breach of promise lawsuits. I was surprised to learn that prior to 1883, there were more than a hundred different time zones in the America. That didn’t matter when traveling in a covered wagon, but it became a major problem when traveling by train.

The cover is lovely. Did you have any input into its design?

Margaret:
The cover was my idea, but the art department gets full credit for turning my vision into something that absolutely captures the essence of my book.

What was the most fun about writing this book?

Margaret:
I loved writing about the town of Two-Time and how one wedding (or rather non-wedding) could cause such an uproar. And what could be more fun than writing about two people falling in love?

What can readers look forward to next from you?

Margaret:
Left at the Altar is the first in a three-book series. Book two, A Match Made in Texas, will be out in the summer of 2017 and it will be followed by How the West Was Wed. I’m currently working on a Christmas novella for next year and starting a new series.

Margaret, thanks for joining us today and sharing this insight into your writing. I never realized jewelers held so much power in the old west.

A beautiful patchwork quilt and the secrets stitched into every seam are at the center of THE FORGOTTEN SEAMSTRESS (ISBN: 9781402282485; $14.99 U.S.; Historical Fiction; Trade Paper). During Liz’s virtual blog tour there is a FREE eBook preview of the first four chapters available on Kindle and NOOK.

Giveaways will be held when Sourcebooks hits 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 pre-orders with prizes ranging from $25 up to $100.

Here’s a brief synopsis of the book …

In 1910 London, a remarkable young seamstress is noticed by Queen Mary and given a position in the royal household. A century later, Caroline, a struggling designer, discovers a mysterious hand-me-down quilt with a curious verse embroidered into its lining.
When Caroline learns that the fabric in the quilt is rare royal wedding silk and begins to dig deeper, she uncovers the extraordinary story of two women whose lives collide with devastating consequences. But that secret pales in comparison to the truth Caroline finally learns about herself.

Please join me in welcoming Liz as she graciously answers some questions for me.

Mason - How did the collaboration with internationally-acknowledged quilter Lynne Edwards impact the story?

Liz:
It’s quite simple: I could not have written the story without her!
I am not a quilter myself so, as I set out to write THE FORGOTTEN SEAMSTRESS, I knew that I would need expert guidance. From the moment I contacted her, Lynne embraced the project with such enthusiasm that I knew at once that our collaboration would produce something remarkable.

We met several times and, over bottles of wine and lots of laughter, ‘devised’ the quilt that my character Maria sewed, taking into account the influences and sources of inspiration that she would have had at different times of her life, and the sort of fabrics she might have had at her disposal at each point in time. The quilt is constructed in ‘medallion’ style, allowing my character to add ‘frames’ each time she picks up the quilt again, sometimes after a long period has elapsed.

Maria sews each concentric ‘frame’ in memory of, or in tribute to, the people who befriend her throughout her life. But we had to be careful to ensure that the messages behind each design were sufficiently subtle not to give away the mystery too quickly, so they are ‘hidden’ in the applique shapes, in the fabrics, in the design and choice of piecing system, and ultimately, in the very construction of the quilt itself.

Each time we came across a problem, we would pour ourselves another glass of wine and Lynne would think for a few seconds before declaring ‘That’s it, that’s how she’d do it,’ and then grabbing a piece of paper and drawing the design so that I could picture it for myself, or perhaps rushing upstairs to her workroom and producing a piece of patchwork to demonstrate how it worked in real fabric. She even lent me a very beautiful unfinished quilt of Liberty Prints that had been left to her by a pupil, so that I could have it in front of me as I wrote that particular passage.

I arrived with a very sketchy idea of how the quilt might be constructed, but by the time we had finished we both had a very clear view of what the quilt would look like. With her years of experience and expertise, Lynne knew precisely what fabrics and techniques Maria might have used, and we had great fun creating her ‘virtual quilt’.

The pattern Lynne has very generously devised is available for free at www.liztrenow.com. If you decide to create ‘Maria’s quilt’ please let me know!

Mason - What are the challenges and rewards of writing a novel that goes back and forth over a period of nearly 100 years?

Liz:
The first challenge was to ensure that the ‘voice’ of each character was consistent and true to the period. For Maria’s story, I read lots of Victorian literature and other novels set in the time, as well as books of social history. For the 30-something metropolitan woman Caroline, I looked no further than my two daughters, both of whom are around that age, and live and work in London! I wrote Maria’s story, and then Caroline’s and then created many drafts of the novel (13 in total) trying to stitch their stories together.

The second challenge was to devise a way in which my contemporary character, Caroline, would be able to discover what had happened to Maria, who in any case is an ‘unreliable narrator’. Because there is a century between the two characters they could not have met, so there had to be a way for Caroline to learn about Maria’s life story.

While researching the history of Severalls Hospital, I came across a wonderful book by the sociologist and author Diana Gittins called Madness in its Place (Routledge 1998), in which she quoted from her recordings with staff and patients. These first-hand accounts really brought the place and the people to life, and in one of those light-bulb moments, I realised that this was exactly what I needed to do with Maria.

So I created a character – Professor Patsy Morton – who had undertaken a research project not unlike that of Diana Gittins’, although a couple of decades earlier. This was the perfect way of allowing Caroline – and the reader – to hear Maria’s story first hand.
This was my ultimate reward: although we never properly ‘meet’ her in the book, the tapes enabled me to feel that I really knew her – I hope this is the same for you. If you want to find out more, please visit me at www.liztrenow.com.

Liz, thank you so much for stopping by today and sharing this background with us. The quilt that Lynne designed is beautiful. The pattern makes me want to try my hand at quilting again.

Welcome Back to Apple Grove and a Giveaway

Note: The winner of this giveaway is Glenda M. Congratulations, Glenda and thanks to all that enter the giveaway.

I’m delighted to welcome author C.H. Admirand back to Thoughts in Progress as she tours blogdom with her new release, WELCOME BACK TO APPLE GROVE.

Thanks to C.H. and the lovely Danielle at Sourcebooks, I have one copy of WELCOME BACK TO APPLE GROVE to giveaway. Please see the end of the post for the giveaway details.

Here’s a brief synopsis of WELCOME BACK TO APPLE GROVE……

There's No Place Like Home...
Grace Mulcahy thought she'd finally gotten Apple Grove, Ohio, out of her system. Then she's lured back for a family barbecue and spies a broad-shouldered hottie hanging out at the grill. He somehow seems utterly at ease, whether flipping burgers or horsing around with her hellion nephews. Why didn't her brother-in-law tell her he had such gorgeous friends? Suddenly her mouth is watering for more than her best friend's famous pie.
Some fires aren't meant to be fought…
When firefighter Pat Garahan sees Grace, it's like a five-alarm bell goes off and he's the one ablaze. She says she wants to leave Apple Grove, but he will do whatever it takes to keep her around. The life of a firefighter isn't an easy one though, and he'll have to prove their immediate spark can have a lasting chance at love…

C.H. joins now and has graciously answered some questions for me about her new release and her writing.

Mason - What drew you to write about small town life in the beginning and did you realize it would be a series as those first few pages began to come together?

C.H.:
My editor, Deb Werksman, asked how I’d feel about writing a small town contemporary series for them. At the time I was in LA for the RT Booklover’s Convention and working on edits for the second book in my contemporary cowboy series. I jumped at the chance because I had this idea about three sisters who were taking over the family business—a handyman business. I always think in terms of family, so it’s either: brothers, sisters, cousins, or close friends.

Mason - Do you do anything special to put yourself in the mood to write and release your muse?

C.H.:
Actually, I’m working on a new routine since I’ve been spending a big chunk of my time babysitting our grandson. I haven’t really worked that out yet, but I am on deadline with my new series, so I guess I’d better start figuring one out! LOL

Mason - Since writers also enjoy reading, what were the last two books you read?

C.H.:
I just finished reading DARK WITCH by Nora Roberts and loved it! It takes place over in Ireland and is about cousins…it’s that family thing, draws me in every time. DANGEROUS REFUGE by Elizabeth Lowell and loved this one too. It takes place out West—I’m a sucker for that locale in books. Smile
Welcome Back to Apple Grove Cover
Mason - The cover of WELCOME BACK TO APPLE GROVE is charming and inviting. Are you able to have an input into the cover design of your books?

C.H.:
Not with my previous and current covers, but I will in my new series. I’m excited about that.

Mason - If I were looking to visit a real town that would be similar to Apple Grove, could you recommend a town that you feel has the same atmosphere?

C.H.:
That’s a tough one because Apple Grove was created from bits and pieces from my childhood neighborhood, the neighborhood we’ve raised our children in, and some of my favorite TV shows as a kid: Petticoat Junction, the Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne and Bonanza. Smile

Mason - What can readers look forward to next from you?

C.H.:
I’m going to be re-releasing the first book in my Regency-era Historical series, THE THREE VICES: PATIENCE in the next month or so. Books 2 and 3: CHARITY and PRUDENCE are wips that I plan to have ready for 2014. Then there is the exciting new Historical Irish Western series that I’ll be writing for Sourcebooks, due to release in 2015. It’s going to be a busy around here for the next little while Smile

C.H., thanks for visiting with us again. It’s fun learning how this series came to be.
For those not familiar with C.H., let me give you some background.

C.H. was born in Aiken, South Carolina, but grew up in New Jersey. She has been delighting readers with her Secret Life of Cowboys Series, featuring three cowboy brothers with Irish charm, as well as the Small Town USA Series, with the quirky characters of Apple Grove, OH.

She lives with her husband, who is the inspiration for all of her heroes’ best traits, in New Jersey. For more information on C.H. and her writing, please visit www.CHAdmirand.com.

WELCOME BACK TO APPLE GROVE is available at the following locations: Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books-a-Million, Chapters/Indigo, IndieBound, iBookstore, Sourcebooks, and Discover a New Love.

Sunday Salon: The Bridesmaid and Homecoming Ranch

coconut-hot-chocolate
Can you believe it’s already the first Sunday Salon of October? It’s time once again to discuss the books we’ve read, so I have a question for you. When selecting a book, do you ever select it without knowing who the author is? I mean have you select the book based solely on the title, synopsis or book cover and never looked at the author’s name?

I recently selected the two books I’m sharing today without really looking at the author’s name on either book. The first, THE BRIDESMAID, I selected because of the synopsis. It sounded like a fun read (and was). The second, HOMECOMING RANCH, I was drawn to because of the book cover and then the synopsis. Only after receiving both did I realize they were by the same author, Julia London. That ever happen to you?

THE BRIDESMAID by Julia London

Bridesmaid coverTwo strangers bound for the same city across paths on an airplane and fate has much more in store for them.

Joe Firretti, with a slightly hangover, boards a flight for Seattle and his new dream job. He’s enjoying life as it comes with no serious commitments. He has to be in Seattle Monday or risk losing the greatest position of his career.

Kate Preston hasn’t lived in New York long, but now she has to go back to Seattle. Her cousin is getting married and she’s in the wedding party. She boards the plane with the ugliest, fluffiest bridesmaid dress in history.

Seated next to each other, Kate and Joe wrestle back and forth over the armrest. When their plane is ground due to weather and air traffic control issues, they wind up sharing the last rental car. As they hurry to their destination, sparks between the two begin to fly.

Once they reach Seattle, Joe attends the wedding with Kate and then they go their separate ways. But fate has other plans and soon the two are rethinking their priorities.

Author Julia London has created well-developed, likeable characters. The bantering between Joe and Kate is realistic and flows smoothly. The secondary characters are zany and add flavor to the story.

The story draws you in quickly and holds you captive as you laugh at the antics of the couple and their journey to Seattle. This may be a novella, but it’s packed with fun characters, a well-balanced plot and delightful settings.

THE BRIDESMAID is a charming look at how two strangers discover they have more in common than they ever imaged. It’s a humorous look at how fate can change the course of lives in an instant.

HOMECOMING RANCH by Julia London

homecoming ranch coverThe cover of this book looks so welcoming you are drawn to the ranch setting. Author Julia London quickly sets the mood and captures your attention as a tale of finding lost family and true love unfolds.

Narrator Tanya Eby does a wonderful job as she gives distinct voices to each of the characters. Her cadence enhances the author’s writing. Her vocalizations are a delight.

Madeline Pruett has created her own perfect, isolated world as a real estate agent in Orlando. Still taking care of her irresponsible mother from time to time, Madeline tries not to dwell on her lonely childhood and the father she never knew. Her world is turned upside down when she learns her absentee father has died leaving her an interest in a Colorado ranch, along with two sisters she never knew existed. Madeline is determined to fly to Colorado, meet her unknown sisters, settle the inheritance, and get back to her life in Orlando.

Meanwhile, Luke Kendrick is called away from his new business and school in Denver to see what has happened to his father and seriously ill brother. It seems his father has lost the family ranch in Pine River and it’s up to Luke to rescue the family once again.

As Madeline adjust to having sisters (who knew their father), she is also drawn to Luke and his love of the ranch. Luke begins to understand what drives Madeline, but still holds on to the hope of rescuing his family’s ranch. Sparks fly between the two as their different worlds collide.

HOMECOMING RANCH is filled with emotion as the lives of characters are revealed. The author deals with longing for family and love, as well as what home really represents. The characters are intriguing and the setting beautifully described.

The story focuses more on Madeline and Luke’s relationship than on her building a relationship with her new sisters. But there are moments of bonding sprinkled throughout and the promise of more to come.

This is an enduring story of finding what family is all about.
