A Very Jaguar Christmas {+ Giveaway}

I’m always delighted to welcome author Terry Spear back to Thoughts in Progress as it means she has a new book out. This time it’s A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS, the fifth installment in her Heart of the Jaguar series.

Terry’s sharing an excerpt from her book today along with the chance to win one of 10 copies of A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS. Please see the end of the post for more details on the giveaway.

First Terry asks, “What if the shifter world as you knew it suddenly changed?”

That’s what happens in A Very Jaguar Christmas. Everyone, jaguars and wolves alike, were blissfully unaware of the others. And now with one little Arctic wolf pup deposited at a jaguar shifter daycare before Christmas, both their worlds collide.

Can you imagine that? I mean, it would be like if some hunky guy you were friends with suddenly turned out to be a wolf—more than just a wolfish guy, but really a part-time wolf! So, they have to deal with not just knowing that wolf shifters exist, but that they have one of their little ones, and where does that leave them?

Jaguars are not pack animals, yet the momma takes care of her babies until they’re old enough to hunt on their own. I was just watching a video about cougars, and the myth that the daddy isn’t welcome anymore might be just that. It showed the momma in a den with her babies and daddy coming to join them! So, it’s possible that jaguars are the same. They’re so elusive, it’s hard to say.

In any event, the human part of the equation usually makes the shifter just as family-oriented as the wolf packs. But there are differences. They don’t have the issue of the full moon to contend with, if they’re more newly turned.

But how do you, if you’re a jaguar shifter, even find where the wolf packs are? How do you take care of a wolf pup? How do you convince a wolf pack that you have one of their own, and you’re a jaguar shifter that they didn’t even know existed?

It’s not just an adult issue, either. How will the pup feel about being with a bunch of big cats? And little cats too? How will the jaguar kits feel about this alien wolf pup in their daycare? What about protective mommas?

So, I’m excited about showing their worlds come together, to see how they will relate, work together, or not. They do have the shifter issue in common, so they have common ground right from the start. And that’s important. But what about territories? Each have their own territories in the wild. Will that be an issue for them as shifters?

For instance, what if a jaguar shifter moved into the town of Silver Town, one place that is totally run by a wolf pack? Would they object? How would a jaguar fit in if he or she had to run in Colorado? What if the jaguar had a mate and little jaguars?

The Victorian Inn is already prepared to handle a jaguar family with a jungle theme just for them in one of the rooms, but what if the family wants to stay and put down roots? Could they abide by wolf pack laws?

So many questions. Fun and conflict—that makes it fun for readers too!

Yep, there’s trouble in shifter paradise, and it’s Christmas on top of that. So, it’s time to make some changes in the natural order of things, deal with the fallout, and make this the best Christmas ever.

There are all kinds of surprises under the mistletoe!

As a protector of all jaguar-kind, Guardian agent Demetria MacFarlane isn’t surprised to get a call near Christmas—but when she’s sent to protect a cub whose species she didn’t even know existed, her holiday season gets complicated. And it doesn’t help that her partner is a distraction of the hottest kind.
Hotshot JAG agent Everett Anderson can handle dangerous poachers and wildlife traffickers, no problem…but kids? Everett fears he’ll be stuck cub-sitting under the Christmas tree, but working with one sexy Guardian she-cat may be the best present he’s ever gotten.

A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS is available at the following sites:

Here’s an excerpt from A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS for your reading pleasure.

What do you do when you think your boss is drinking on the job in celebration of Christmas when he gives you the most unreal mission you could think of?

Early that morning, Demetria got an emergency call from the director of the Guardian branch. She was feeling better, but she was on vacation, had had to take something for a headache this morning, and fully intended to sleep for a few more hours. It was only six in the morning!

Then her heart thumped wildly, her first thought that there was some awful development concerning Brayden.

When her boss told her the trouble he was calling about, she immediately believed Ben had gotten an early start on drinking mistletoe martinis in celebration of the holidays.

She put the call on speaker so she could get dressed. “Okay, sir, you’re telling me that the jaguar shifter daycare has an Arctic wolf shifter pup there. Really? That’s like saying they have a Bigfoot baby there. They’re trying to pull a prank on us.”

“I’m serious, Demetria. I need you to go over there immediately. You might know that a JAG agent’s mother owns and operates the daycare, so she called her son Everett Anderson to take care of it at first. Since he was working with you on Brayden Covington’s case, he called and highly recommended you handle it. The JAG agency doesn’t normally deal with guardian-type services. That’s our job.”

Mary Anderson’s daycare? Demetria couldn’t believe it. Mary was great at coming up with fantastical stories and games for the kids, but she didn’t figure her for going with a practical joke that involved a policing agency.

Demetria squinted at her reflection in the mirror. Ugh. She brushed her hair and began applying her makeup. “We don’t handle anything like that either, for anything other than jaguars. This has got to be someone’s idea of a joke. This year, the different branches pulled all kinds of pranks on each other.”

“That was on April Fool’s Day.”

“So, maybe they’re a little early for next year.”

Ignoring her comment, Ben said, “I need you to check it out and report back to me ASAP.”

“All right, sir.” This was nuts. And she hated to be the fall guy.

“Okay, but if this truly is a case of learning there’s such a thing as a wolf shifter, I’m canceling your leave and assigning you the job. This case takes priority over anything else.”

She wished she hadn’t had that third margarita last night.

She grabbed her purse and glanced at the clean kitchen, vaguely recalling that Everett had been mopping the floor before…before he carried her off to bed. Now she felt even guiltier that she’d said no to a date with him today. Was this a way for him to get even?

She headed out the door.

“All right?” Ben said, getting confirmation she was going along with the program.

“Yes, sir.” Because she knew this was all some dumb hoax. Though she couldn’t believe Everett or his mother would be trying to pull some prank on her. She just didn’t know what to think.

When Demetria arrived at the daycare, pretend frost covered the windows, making it look like a winter’s day in Dallas. Twinkling colorful lights hanging from the eves and lights in the windows gave it a real holiday look. The sign out front had two little angels holding jaguar cubs, signifying to jaguar shifters that one of their own ran the place. She didn’t imagine any human daycare would include jaguars in its motif, and she wondered what humans would think of the notion of having a wild animal as part of the branding.

Looking totally frazzled with her blond hair slipping from her bun, Mary Anderson met Demetria outside and quickly ushered her into the daycare. “Oh, oh, I’m so glad you’re here, Demetria. This is just well…just…unreal. And wonderful. And horrible.”

Demetria had never seen Everett’s mother so rattled. Well, except for the time she was helping search for the runaway preschooler. “My boss sent me to help take care of the situation. May I see the wolf shifter pup?”

“Yes, yes, this way. Everett has been watching over him. He starts crying and whimpering if we leave him alone for even a minute.”

“Wolf pack mentality,” Demetria said, as if buying into this. “Unless you mean your son.”

Mary smiled a little. “Everett will be thrilled you arrived to take the pup off his hands. He was the one who called your boss and asked for your help. He was a little worried you might not be feeling well because you were a touch under the weather last night, but he knew you were just the one to handle it. We have a serious problem here.”

Demetria hoped he hadn’t told his mother why she was a “touch under the weather” last night. “Besides the fact werewolves don’t exist?”

“We don’t know who the mother was.”

Demetria frowned at her. “You didn’t sign the child in?” Even though she knew this had to be a joke, she still couldn’t help treating it like it was a real case.

“No. Neither did Heidi Johansson, my helper,” Mary said. “The woman just dropped the child off, then left. If he had been strictly human and hadn’t told Heidi he was going to shift and then shifted, I would have called child protective services.”

Demetria did smell the wolf scent, which told her that they’d had a real wolf, or wolf-dog, here at some point.

They both reached the doorway to a room in the back of the building and looked in. Smiling, Everett crouched on the floor, playing tug-of-war with the wolf pup, the silver aluminum halo firmly entrenched between the pup’s teeth. Demetria smiled at the sight, pulled out her cell phone, and snapped a shot to send to her boss. Now this was seeing Everett in a new light. Though watching him mop the spilled margarita off her floor and clean up all the glass was something she’d never seen him do either. She had to admit she was grateful he’d cleaned up the floor, dishes, and everything.

“Oh, no, Everett,” his mother scolded. “We need those for the Christmas play.” Mary took the halo away from Everett, looking highly annoyed with him.

Everett appeared properly chastised, while the pup looked like he was disappointed his favorite toy had been taken away from him and was still eyeing it in Mary’s hand.

Cowboys, Cops and Jaguars

When it comes to steamy romance and memorable characters, there are three Sourcebooks authors that know how to do it up right.

While romance may be on the top of the list when it comes to what to watch for, these three authors also offer up mystery, suspense, loyalty, humor and oh, so much more. The three books I want to tell you about offer something for everyone. Up first is cowboys and a reality TV show, followed by a small town sheriff and the preacher’s daughter, and ending with a hunt for exotic animal traders and jaguars shifters.

COWBOY SEEKS BRIDE by Carolyn Brown

Cowboy Seeks Bride CoverIf I can help it, I never start reading a Carolyn Brown book after 9 p.m. Because I know if I do, it will be in the wee hours of the morning before I can make myself put the book down.

The author creates such realistic characters, entertaining plots and hilarious moments, it’s hard to find a place to stop reading. The dialogue is conversational pulling the reader into the action and making them feel right at home.

COWBOY SEEKS BRIDE is a fine example of Brown’s work mixing her memorable characters with historical facts for a steamy romance and laugh-out-loud moments. She paints a breath-taking landscape with her vivid descriptions.

In this last installment in the Spikes and Spurs series, rancher Dewar O’Donnell is looking forward to reenacting the historic Chisholm Trail cattle drive with family and friends. This cattle drive is a trail run for a possible reality TV show. What Dewar didn’t count on was the reality show’s field man being a woman.

H.B. ‘Haley’ McKay is determined to make this drive into a reality show. The high-powered businesswoman hadn’t realized her research would have her riding a horse for a month with a bunch of modern-day cowboys.

As the unlikely group heads out on the trail drive, little do they know they’ll be facing more than storms, stampedes, snakes and coyotes.

The characters are spunky and likable. The story moves at a steady pace holding your attention from one encounter to the next tender moment and back to danger. The blend of humor and determination makes for an intriguing read. Brown gives her secondary characters flare and depth adding another layer to the story.

COWBOY SEEKS BRIDE features a feisty heroine and a sexy hero for a rip-roaring good time.

SURRENDER TO SULTRY by Macy Beckett

Sultry coverAuthor Macy Beckett has captured the small town atmosphere in SURRENDER TO SULTRY. She brings the best elements - friends, family, love and loyalty - together for a tender love story with bits of suspense woven in.

In a town where everyone knows everybody and what they’re doing, Leah McMahon is determined to stay under Sheriff Colton Bea’s radar. She’s returned to Sultry after a 10 year absence to care for her father following his heart surgery. As soon as he’s on the mend, Leah plans to return to her life up north and far away from Colton.

When he stops a car for a traffic violation, Colton never imaged it would be his long-lost love Leah. Struck speechless, Colton can’t tell Leah how sorry he is for the way he treated her all those years ago. After a decade of womanizing, can the reformed sheriff finally do right by the preacher’s daughter? But Leah has her own secrets that could jeopardize any chance of happiness. Would he ever forgive her if he knew?

Beckett’s characters, realistic with flaws and problems, are well developed. Her secondary characters are rich in flavor adding to the depth of the story. Her detailed descriptions of the small town and its residents places the reader among the characters.

Author Terry Spear: Jaguar Research And A Giveaway

It’s always a pleasure to welcome USA Today bestselling author Terry Spear to Thoughts in Progress. She creates such fascinating stories and her latest release, JAGUAR FEVER, is a great example of that.

JAGUAR FEVER is the second installment in her new Heart of the Jaguar series. Thanks to Terry and the lovely Danielle at Sourcebooks, I have a copy of the first book in the series to giveaway today. Please see the end of the post for the giveaway details.

Here’s a brief synopsis of JAGUAR FEVER:
She's being pursued by everyone, in more ways than one.

Even in an exotic world of humans, jaguars, and tantalizing creatures who shift between the two, Maya Anderson stands out from the crowd. Interest from human suitors is bad enough, but when male shifters give chase, the real trouble starts.
Who's the hunter and who's the prey?

Investigating the black marketing trade of exotic animals keeps Wade Patterson more than busy. When he and Maya both get entangled in a steamy jungle mission, it becomes impossible to tell who is being hunted or who the hunters are. Wade is desperate to survive this deadly game of cat and mouse. But it's Maya's piercing eyes that keep him awake at night.

Terry joins us now and has graciously answered some questions about her series and her writing.

Mason - Could you explain the depth of research you've gone through and continue to do so for your new Jaguar series?

Terry:
I love learning how it is for folks to visit an area like the jungle, when I actually can't go there myself. But seeing how it was from trip reports from others gives a feel of what we would see or hear or taste or smell if we were with the jaguars in these exotic jungle locations.

I also use real jungle retreats in my stories. So the descriptions of the cabanas are real places. I will have pictures of them on my screen while I'm "living" there with my shifter friends to keep me in the setting. I watch videos of jaguars moving in the jungle, reclining in trees, drinking at a river, catching catfish in the Amazon, or courting a jaguar who's interested in a mating. All these help me to describe jaguar scenes more accurately.

I study the jaguars' behavior at my local zoo, have captured their huffing roars on video, watched them pace, lie down on a boulder, drink from a water source, chase after birds they can't reach, clean themselves with their long pink tongues, and yawn, showing off their long, wicked canines.
I learn what menus are being served at the resorts to lend authenticity. For this story, I moved from the Amazon to Belize. I researched about the animals found there, about the hunting regulations, and about the exotic animals market. I learned about the exotic animal farms where the animals are being raised to hunt at exorbitant prices locally instead of the hunter having to kill his prey in the countries where the animals are from.

I've researched about clubs, even found beautiful designer leopard skin bikinis that I used in helping to visualize the dancers on stage at the jaguar shifter club. I've researched the differences between cats—domesticated house cats—because most of us know something about them—and the big cats. And between big cats and how different they are from each other. And how different the jaguars are from wolves.

Mason - What were some of the most surprising things you learned about Jaguars?

Terry:
That their jaws are so powerful, they can crunch through a tortoise shell. And that it only takes a swipe of their paw to stun or kill their prey. And unlike pumas, tigers, and lions, jaguars are elusive andJaguar Fever Cover do not hunt humans. Also that ocelots and jaguars live in the same area, but jaguars treat them as encroachers even though the ocelots dine on smaller animals than the jaguars. But jaguars are extremely territorial and no other cats are allowed, small or otherwise.

Mason - As you’re writing about the Jaguars, do you have any type of visual aid around to inspire you such as photos, movies or soundtracks?

Terry:
Yes! All of the above. I've watched several videos showing their behavior, listen to soundtracks both of jaguars roaring, but also of the sounds various birds and bugs make to catch that in my writing. Or the rainfall in a rainforest. Or the sound of water running down a stream.

Photos, definitely. I will look at photos of jaguars to describe their coloration and patterns to differentiate them from others. The greenhouse I used in SAVAGE HUNGER is a greenhouse I found on Pinterest. Beautiful. The treetop cabanas where Maya and her brother and sister-in-law stayed have a rotating view of the rooms, the dining room, etc., and I had them on my monitor while I described the various scenes that included them. The ones that Wade and David stayed at were different and I had the pictures of those, both outside and inside to use to help describe the settings. The same with the tours they took while there. I used pictures to help describe them.

Mason - With the book’s release, as you look back what was the biggest surprise that occurred while you were writing the story?

Terry:
That David, Wade Patterson's brother, kept trying to steal the show. He has his book next in the series, JAGUAR HUNT. When I write my stories, I never know where they'll take me.

Mason - For people who have never read this genre, what do you think they would be surprised to find if they try it?

Terry:
Realism. Even though they're about werewolves or jaguar shifters, the stories are written with mystery, murder, intrigue, romance in an everyday kind of way. They are as real as shifters can be. What can I say? The hunky guy next door who swims in your condo complex's pool and looks like Adonis, all muscles and a to-die-for tan who takes regular "business" trips to South America, loves all things "nature," and practically purrs when you get near—maybe, just maybe he's one of those hot jaguar shifters. He might be a little possessive, a lot territorial, but in the end, he's a regular guy who loves a run on the wild side. Did I mention he's really hot?

Mason - If you could co-author a book with any author (living or dead) who would it be and what type of book would it be?

Terry:
My dad. I would love to have co-authored his life story. He survived so many near death experiences, including freefalling from an airplane when his crashed over Germany and he ended up in a POW camp for 16 months, but so many other situations too that nearly cost him his life. He was a storyteller extraordinaire, but when it came to real life, he had the real stories to tell too.

Mason - What is the strangest, most unusual or funniest experience you’ve had at a book signing, literary festival or author event?

Terry:
I'm not really outgoing, so when I was at a book store signing, my daughter said, "Mom, you've got to give a spiel. Like, 'Wouldn't you like to find romance,'" or something like that. So I did say that to customers of the book store until this older gentleman looked straight at me and I asked him that question, "Wouldn't you like to have some romance?"

His face brightened and he smiled big time. I knew I'd say the wrong thing after I'd opened my mouth.

"Yeah, sure, I haven't been asked that in years." He returned three times thanking me for asking! I tried to talk him into buying an autographed book for his wife, but he was just so thankful I'd asked him if he'd like to have some romance, he just had to keep telling me how much he appreciated it. He was cute and I was sure I was blushing to high heaven.

Mason - What can readers look forward to next from you?

Terry:
The SEALs are back in the hot in time for Christmas in October: A SEAL Wolf Christmas. And in February 2014, the much awaited Silence of the Wolf, Tom Silver from the Silver Bros wolf pack in Silver Town, Colorado. After that, it's the next jaguar book in the series, Jaguar Hunt in June 2014, and then more! I'm working on A Hero of a Highland Wolf right now, and have Guthrie MacNeill's Christmas story coming after that. And even more after that!

Terry, thanks so much for joining us and sharing this intriguing look at your research. I love the story about the gentleman at the book store. So cute. You definitely made his day.

Jaguars And Small Towns

One of the things I love about books is the fact they can take you places you’ve never been and introduce you to people and places beyond your wildest dreams.

I have two books today I’d like to share with you. They are completely different in their themes and genres, but both are incredible reads.

SAVAGE HUNGER by Terry Spear

9781402266928Having been a fan of author Terry Spear for some time now, I awaited her newest series (Heart of the Jaguar) with great expectations. True to her form, she did not disappoint me but reinforced how prolific a writer she is.

A mission to the Amazon to take down a ruthless drug Lord turned out to be more than Army Officer Kathleen ‘Kat’ McKnight bargained for. When the mission goes terrible wrong, a mysterious man suddenly appears and saves her from certain death. Haunted by those memories, Kat returns to the rain forest a year later hoping to find the man. She never expected to discover the man is was hiding a life-changing secret.

Connor Anderson and his sister were in the jungle on their yearly visit connecting with their shape shifting jaguar roots when he encountered the botched drug raid. Getting back to his life and needing to find his life mate, Connor can’t help but think of the tough Army officer he saved. When he comes face-to-face with her a year later, he wonders if they could truly be together.

Learning of his shape shifting secret and Kat’s dangerous past returning could have serious consequences for the pair.
Spear is meticulous in her research for her series and it shines in SAVAGE HUNGER. Not only are the characters well developed, but her detailed descriptions of the settings place the reader in the middle of the action.

Connor is an ideal hero with his good looks and sexy ways. Adding a few flaws makes him realistic. Kat is the perfect heroine to match Connor. She is tough and independent, but has a vulnerable side. Maya is a wonderful secondary character. She allows Connor and Kat to show different sides of themselves when she’s involved.

While this is a paranormal tale with shape shifting jaguars, Spear tells the story in such a way you come to believe in the ability while immersed in the characters’ lives. She makes the impossible seem real and natural while keeping you in suspense.

The story moves along at a steady pace packed with action and interesting twists. It’s also filled with steamy romance, family loyalty, determination, humor and an understanding of the interactions of man and nature. Once you pick up SAVAGE HUNGER, it will sink its claws into you and hold you captive till the end. A tantalizing start to a fascinating new series.

SULTRY WITH A TWIST by Macy Beckett

9781402270369Author Macy Beckett has made a splash with her new debut novel dealing with unending love, family problems and finding what you want in life without knowing you were looking.

Opening the pages of SULTRY WITH A TWIST, readers are transported to a small Texas town where everyone knows everyone and everything about them including how to offer second changes and a hand up when needed. It’s filled with Southern sass, sexy cowboys and steamy romance.

Mae-June July Augustine left Sultry Springs nine years ago with a broken heart and planned to never return. As her dream of opening an upscale martini bar in Austin is weeks away from becoming a reality, June receives terrible news. It seems she has an outstanding warrant in her hometown and must clear it up before the proper paperwork can be approved for the bar.

Not a problem. A quick visit to the judge and the matter will be resolved. Wrong. The judge offers June a month of community service work or longer jail time. Nothing to do but the community service which puts her under the supervision of sexy Luke Gallagher, her first love and ex-friend, and staying with her estranged grandmother, Pru.

As June works with Luke renovating houses, their attraction returns hotter than ever. Luke isn’t sure June will fit in with his plans and June has to decide if she misses the allure of Austin or enjoys the pleasures of Sultry Springs more. Which dream will come true, the one she’s had for years or the one she never imagined?

Beckett has created fun characters with depth and secondary characters that add charm and laughter to the mix. The setting is realistic with a small town feel. The story moves at a steady pace and holds your attention. It’s filled with laugh-out-loud moments, sizzling romance and tug-on-your heartstring scenes.

SULTRY WITH A TWIST is a charming beginning to a delightful new series where second chances led to interesting developments.
