Sunday Salon: More Books To Share

main-hot-chocolateI can’t believe I turn around and it’s time for Sunday Salon again. The days are speeding up with Christmas just 2 weeks away. But today let’s take a little time for another cup of of your favorite beverage and exchange book suggestions. I find books (all formats) make wonderful gifts at Christmas and any time of the year.

I continue to share books from a variety of genres. You could be missing some amazing stories by not trying a different genre. First up is a collection of short stories followed by a cookbook.

IN THE MIDDLE OF ALMOST by S.B. Lerner

In-the-Middle-new-coverThe ups and downs of single life can be trying for a woman in the big city. Author S.B. Lerner has put together a collection of short stories that highlight these twists and turns of life.

The stories are a mixture of humor, sentiment, and bittersweet reflections. They illustrate what can happen when busy women meet men in the wrong places and what they learn about themselves.

IN THE MIDDLE OF ALMOST is a collection of 8 stories that were previously published in newspapers and literary magazines.

The stories will have you remembering the triumphs and losses of single life. They will have you laughing and tug on your heart strings at the same time. FRENCH FRIES is a fun example. You’ll have to read the book to understand.

***NOTE; Please be sure to drop by tomorrow as Author S.B. Lerner joins us to talk about a psychic’s predictions for her.***

from the Editors of Fine Cooking

121393537I seem to be giving more attention to cookbooks lately, especially if they feature soup or stew recipes. I think the coming of winter has something to do with it.

When I saw ‘Comfort Food’ in the title of FINE COOKING COMFORT FOOD, I knew there would be some recipes just right for the cold weather ahead. I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, there are 200 yummy recipes that are perfect for warming anyone’s appetite.

The book is divided into chapters. They include: soups and chowders; stews and chilis; pasta and grains; one-pot meals, casseroles and more; breakfast and brunch; sandwiches; sides; and desserts. The recipes range from the traditional meatloaf, mac and cheese, and chicken pot pie to ethnic specialties such as Transylvania goulash and Brazilian chicken and shrimp.

What I found most helpful is the step-by-step instructions and photos for certain recipes. These include such as how to make a perfect omelet and the secrets to smooth fudge. There are also numerous tips and secrets, shortcuts, handy kitchen advice, and ingredient profiles throughout the book.

The recipes are easy to follow and each is accompanied by a beautiful color photo showing the end result.

This handy cookbook features recipes for cooks of all levels from beginners to culinary professionals. It’s a wonderful addition to any kitchen library.

I found a number of great recipes for soups and stews. Two of my favorites are French farmers’ soup and tomato bisque and cheese toasts. Both are great for a cold afternoon of warming by the fire as you relax with a good book.
