Blending the world’s largest motorcycle rally with possible gun/drug running, rival biker gangs, a military-grade mammoth vehicle, and murder leads to a fascinating tale. Add to that the appearance of the female Henry named his ’59 Thunderbird after and things snowball.

This fast-paced story will keep you in suspense and stitches as the surprise twists and turns unfold. With Henry’s added bits of Sherlock Holmes wisdom, Walt’s way with the locals, and Vic’s bold approach to any situation and you’re in for a treat. So seems the case in author Craig Johnson’s latest Longmire story, THE HIGHWAYMAN. The author once again uses the spirit world to bring a story full circle. Johnson makes the unexplainable appear plausible.

Being a novella, the story is short and easily read in an afternoon. The pace is quick threaded with action and suspense. The secondary characters add depth to the story. Meanwhile, the bond between Walt and Henry is reinforced by their actions.

This is a wonderful tale in the Longmire tradition. Johnson knows how to blend Native American traditions/customs with modern times and law enforcement procedures for a smooth flowing story. Through detailed descriptions and an eye for detail, Johnson places the reader in the middle of the scene as the story unfolds around you.

This is a fascinating tale that will have you reflecting on it long after you close the book.

I’ve had author Craig Johnson’s collection of short stories, WAIT FOR SIGNS: Twelve Longmire Stories, on my list to share with you since its release. The author’s birthday was Friday (Jan. 16) and it reminded me that I hadn’t shared the book yet.

If you’re not a fan of Johnson’s protagonist, Sheriff Walt Longmire, this is a good book to start with. While you won’t know all the background on the characters, you will get an impressive look at the world of Longmire. You’ll see the rugged charm, dry wit, dedicated lawman and troubled soul that is Longmire.

WAIT FOR SIGNS is 12 short stories that cover numerous events in Longmire’s career and life. Some stories will have you laughing out loud, while others will tug at your heart strings.

Most of the stories deal with issues around Christmas or New Year’s. Johnson’s first short story, OLD INDIAN TRICK, begins the collection. The remaining stories came about as free gifts for Johnson’s newsletter subscribers who got hooked when he shared OLD INDIAN TRICK and they wanted another story each year.

This collection of shorts is a must have for any Longmire fan. They give a look at Walt’s life not always found in the usual tales. For first-time readers of the Longmire series, don’t be surprised if you find yourself looking for the other books by Johnson.

Author Craig Johnson has a wonderful way of pulling you into a setting in such a manner you feel immersed in what is happening.

In his latest release, ANY OTHER NAME, Johnson once again shows the lengths his protagonist, Absaroka County Sheriff Walt Longmire, will go for his friends and to see justice served.

Torn between his duties as a father and his loyalty to his mentor and former boss, retired Sheriff Lucian Connally, Longmire agrees to help Lucian repay a debt to a dead man. While his daughter, Cady, awaits the birth of her first child (Longmire’s first grandchild) in Philadelphia, Longmire and Lucian visit neighboring Campbell County. It seems Gerald Holman, a by-the-book lawman in charge of Campbell County’s cold case files, committed suicide. But his wife, a friend of Lucian’s, doesn’t believe it.

Even though it’s outside his jurisdiction, Longmire begins re-evaluating the case. Holman had been working on three cold cases involving missing women with seemingly no connection. That might not be true as Longmire follows leads to the tiny town of Arrosa. Longmire also wonders why a man would shot himself in the cheek one week and kill himself the next. With the help of his associates, Longmire uncovers dark secrets that some want to remain closed.

Once again the author combines a tantalizing mystery with tidbits of humor for a well-balanced story. The plot flows smoothly with twists and turns to hold you spellbound until the end. The characters are fascinating, likeable and realistic. The author’s vivid descriptions places the reader in the middle of the action seemingly so real you’ll swear you feel the cold wind blowing.

ANY OTHER NAME is the 11th book in the Longmire Mystery series, but can be read as a stand-alone. New readers won’t be in the dark, but may find themselves intrigued to find out about back stories. The characters have evolved over the series and readers will have a better appreciation for their growth having read the series in order.

This is a mesmerizing mystery you won’t be able to put down once you begin.

It came down to Longmire, a couple of friends, and a whiskey-soaked Connolly who had flown the only thing that could get the child to Denver - a decommissioned plane from his World War II days as a pilot.

Their hair-rising ride to Denver is a heart-pounding adventure. It will hold you spellbound as the troubled plane makes its way through the blizzard with the crew trying to hold it together.

Johnson once again brings the story to life with his vivid details and dialogue. His rich narrative will have you shivering from the cold of the blizzard and smiling from the determination of the group hell bent on getting the girl to the hospital.

SPIRIT OF STEAMBOAT is a standalone read that will become a holiday favorite to enjoy again and again.

Once again I have books of different genres to share with you today. One is a reflection of where we’ve been with an inspiring tale, the other is a romance that will warm your heart, and the third is a look at the American West and an intriguing murder mystery.

THE CLOCK OF LIFE by Nancy Klann-Moren

With the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington in the news, now is the perfect time to discover THE CLOCK OF LIFE by Nancy Klann-Moren.

This intriguing story deals with the small town of Hadlee, Mississippi, in the 1980s where racial attitudes were steadfast. The story focuses on Jason Lee, a white boy, and his strong friendship with Samson Johnson, a black boy. Klann-Moren has created characters that remain with you long after the story ends. The emotions of the era are felt through these characters and their actions. The story flows smoothly and holds you spellbound as Jason endures pain and finds he has his father’s courage and strength.

THE CLOCK OF LIFE is a subtle reminder of how far we’ve come, but also of how much more is needed to be done. These strong characters and reminders from the past are well blended for an inspiring read.

HALF MOON HILL by Toni Blake

With HALF MOON HILL you get two love stories unfolding - one in the present and the other years before with ties to the present.

The main love story deals with Anna Romo and Duke Dawson. Their lives intersect at a time when both are hurting, hiding from society and wondering what lies ahead for them.

Narrator Jennifer Bradshaw brings the characters of author Toni Blake’s novel to life. Bradshaw vocalizes the highs and lows of the characters with great endeavor. Her way with words enhances the author’s story.

Anna has moved to Destiny to be close to the ‘real’ family she recently learned she had. Having been taken from them and Destiny when she was a child, Anna wants to re-connect but still needs space to adjust. She buys an old Victorian home on Half Moon Hill and decides to open a B&B after making repairs.

Duke is trying to come to terms with an accident in which his friend was killed and he was scared. Selling his biker bar, Duke has retreated to a shabby remote cabin leaving his friends to believe he’s left town. Living the hermit life, he’s trying to decide where his life is going.

During an outing in the woods near her home, Anna discovers Duke is living in the cabin on the edge of her property. Frightened at first by his wild man-look, Anna recovers and agrees to keep Duke’s secret since he’s her brother’s best friend.

Intrigued by Anna, Duke goes by her house where he finds her attempting outside repairs. Something draws the two to make a deal where Duke helps with the repairs for Anna’s continued silence about his whereabouts.

As the work progresses, so does the attraction between the two. Soon a passionate love affair begins. When the repairs are complete, Duke says goodbye and prepares to leave. Despite her love for him, Anna lets him go. 

The secondary love story is found in a diary Anna discovers in the attic. It tells of how the former owner of the house fell in love when she was young. The boy worked for her family and their love affair was forbidden. In the end, she had to make a choice between her family and her lover. Anna hopes her fate with Duke won’t turn out the same.

The author gives great depth to her troubled characters making them realistic and easy to like. The small town atmosphere is felt through her descriptions and the dialogue.

HALF MOON HILL moves at a steady pace and holds your attention as the two love stories unfold. The author has blended romance, family loyalty, a bit of mystery, humor, and heartwarming moments for a well balanced story. While this is the sixth installment in the Destiny series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone. Enough background is given to keep new readers up to speed on the town and its residents.

For a romance that will tug at your heartstrings and heat up the coldest of days, HALF MOON HILL fits the bill.

DEATH WITHOUT COMPANY by Craig Johnson

Catching up past installments of a series can be fun, especially when it’s written by New York Times bestselling author Craig Johnson and it’s the Walt Longmire Mystery Series.

In the second book, DEATH WITHOUT COMPANY, readers return to the rugged landscape of Absaroka County, Wyoming. Sheriff Walt Longmire is investigating the death of Mari Baroja, who was found poisoned at the Durant Home for Assisted Living.

As the story unfolds, Longmire looks into the mysterious woman’s past that goes back 50 years. Connecting the past to the present is the only way Longmire can find the killer. He has the help of his Deputy Victoria Moretti, his best friend Henry Standing Bear, and a new Deputy Santiago Saizarbitoria to search for clues. 

Johnson has a way of placing the reader in the middle of the action with his vivid descriptions of the landscape. His characters are well-developed but continue to evolve with each installment. They are realistic and likable.

The story moves at a steady pace with suspense, mystery and just enough humor sprinkled throughout for a smooth read. In addition, Johnson incorporates the history of Basque sheepherders who settled in Wyoming into the story and how their culture interacted with those residing there. 

DEATH WITHOUT COMPANY will pull you further into the Longmire series and hold you spellbound as you learn more about the fascinating sheriff and his trusty group of friends.

In The Beginning: The Cold Dish

When it comes to series, I normally like to read them in order. However, sometimes I’m introduced to a new series by the latest release which could be the first or the 20th. 

In the case of author Craig Johnson’s series, Longmire, my first real introduction to his series was book nine, A SERPENT’S TOOTH. Thanks to the lovely Angela at Penguin, I had the chance to go back and start at the beginning of the series with THE COLD DISH.

THE COLD DISH by Craig Johnson

Walt Longmire has served his time as sheriff of Wyoming’s Absaroka County and is looking forward to retiring. Those plans are dashed when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation.

Several years back, Cody and three other high school boys raped a local Cheyenne girl. They were only given suspended sentences for their crime. When a second boy turns up dead, it seems someone is seeking their own brand of justice for their actions. It’s up to Longmire to see that the cold dish of revenge isn’t served to the remaining boys. Helping him in his fight to save the boys is his deputy, Victoria Moretti, and his lifelong friend, Henry Standing Bear.

In THE COLD DISH, Johnson creates a realistic story that is filled with a cast of zany and likable characters. He balances a blend of humor, suspense, tragedy and hope for a well-developed story. 

Johnson’s vivid eye for detail enhances his descriptions as told from a law enforcement point of view. The back stories on each character adds to the overall plot as readers get to know them through Longmire. The interaction among the characters is plausible and draws the reader in. Their quick and witty dialogue will have you laughing at times.

The story flows smoothly and at a steady pace holding the readers attention from beginning to surprising end. THE COLD DISH is an appealing start to a series mystery fans have quickly followed.
