To celebrate that release, thanks to the lovely Lili and the good folks at Penguin, I have a paperback copy of the book to giveaway. Please see the end of the post for more giveaway details.

Today I’m sharing the review of WAIT FOR SIGNS I did in January. In addition, I’m listing a bit of background on the author, as well as his upcoming tour dates.

WAIT FOR SIGNS by Craig Johnson
(Originally posted Jan. 18, 2015)

I’ve had author Craig Johnson’s collection of short stories, WAIT FOR SIGNS: Twelve Longmire Stories, on my list to share with you since its release. The author’s birthday was Friday (Jan. 16) and it reminded me that I hadn’t shared the book yet.

If you’re not a fan of Johnson’s protagonist, Sheriff Walt Longmire, this is a good book to start with. While you won’t know all the background on the characters, you will get an impressive look at the world of Longmire. You’ll see the rugged charm, dry wit, dedicated lawman and troubled soul that is Longmire.

WAIT FOR SIGNS is 12 short stories that cover numerous events in Longmire’s career and life. Some stories will have you laughing out loud, while others will tug at your heart strings.

Most of the stories deal with issues around Christmas or New Year’s. Johnson’s first short story, OLD INDIAN TRICK, begins the collection. The remaining stories came about as free gifts for Johnson’s newsletter subscribers who got hooked when he shared OLD INDIAN TRICK and they wanted another story each year.

This collection of shorts is a must have for any Longmire fan. They give a look at Walt’s life not always found in the usual tales. For first-time readers of the Longmire series, don’t be surprised if you find yourself looking for the other books by Johnson.

WAIT FOR SIGNS is a quick read that will have you longing for more of the humorous and cantankerous Wyoming Sheriff of Absaroka County.

  2. I much prefer paper backs. They hurt less when they fall in my face while I am reading in bed. And, more seriously, they are lighter and easier for me to handle.
Another book to add to my wish list. Thank you.

  4. I would so adore to win "Wait For Signs"!!! I am a great fan of Craig Johnson and his "Walt Longmire Mysteries". I love the books and the show--I call them the "Parallel Walt Universes". Two very intriguing takes on the characters and story line. I just about inhaled the first three seasons of the series on A&E, and then I was devastated to learn of the cancellation. I supported the campaign to find a new home for the series, was overjoyed when it was picked up by Netflix, but crushed when I could not access Netflix due to my personal circumstances. I did read a synopsis of the fourth season as soon as it aired, and I was very saddened to see that the character of "Branch" had been killed. The books and the series are different, but they are both whip-cracking good entertainment! A tip of the Stetson to Johnson, Longmire & Co!!!

  6. What a great giveaway idea, Mason! The Walt Longmire series is fantastic, and reading short stories is, I think, a terrific way to get to know Craig Johnson's writing style. I like it!

  7. He's going to be a BUSY guy! That looks like a book tour his publisher sent him on--that's awesome. I've been watching Meg Cabot travel the globe on her book tours and it's fairly interesting. When you get to that level, you just go where your publisher says!
