It’s always a delight to welcome author Heather Blake back to Thoughts in Progress as I know she’ll have a fascinating new book to share with us.
During today’s visit, Heather will be talking about her latest release, ONE POTION IN THE GRAVE, and an awesome giveaway she’s hosting. In addition, thanks to the lovely Danielle at Penguin Group, I have a print copy of ONE POTION IN THE GRAVE (the second installment in the Magic Potion series) to giveaway to a lucky visitor. Please see the end of the post for more information about the giveaways.
First, join me in giving a warm welcome to Heather, who is here to talk about ‘Southern Comfort.’ Welcome, Heather!
Southern Comfort…
…food, that is.
While researching the Magic Potion mysteries, I’m always coming across Southern recipes and trying to figure out how I can incorporate them into the book without turning it from a magical series to one about Southern cooking.
But, oh my. The South doesn’t lack a love for food. Pecan pie. Fritters (drool). Hush puppies. Biscuits and gravy. Cornbread. Red rice and sausage. Anything buttermilk. Coca Cola cake. Pot pies, fried pickles, barbecue anything, apple butter, dumplings, fried chicken… It’s endless. Endless, I tell you.
So, having said all that, you’d think that my main character, healing witch Carly Bell Hartwell, would have a traditionally Southern go-to comfort food, right? Moon Pies or GooGoo Bars or some such.
Nope.
Her go-to?
Peanut butter.
In times of stress, she grabs a spoon and digs in. I wouldn’t put it past her to just use her finger, depending on the circumstances.
Shocking, I know.
But… I believe most peanuts are grown in the South, so that has to count for something, right? Right?
What’s your favorite comfort food?
Heather, thanks for visiting today and sharing Carly Bell’s favorite comfort food. You are so right, we Southerners do have a love of food and peanuts are a big crop here in Georgia.
Now for those who aren’t familiar with Heather, here’s a bit of background on her.
Heather Blake (aka Heather Webber) is the author of more than twenty novels and has been twice nominated for an Agatha Award. She's a total homebody who loves to be close to her family, read, watch reality TV (especially cooking competition shows), drink too much coffee, crochet, and bake cookies.
Heather grew up in a suburb of Boston, but currently she lives in the Cincinnati area with her family and is hard at work on her next book.
For more on Heather and her writing, visit her website and connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

Now here’s my thoughts on this intriguing new cozy mystery.
ONE POTION IN THE GRAVE by Heather Blake
It’s been over a decade since Katie Sue Perrywinkle left town, but her old childhood friend Carly Bell Hartwell is happy to see her return. But Katie is back to settle a score with Senator Warren Calhoun and his son’s high-profile wedding in Hitching Post, Ala., seems the perfect place to do it.
Someone wants Katie to remain quiet forever. Carly is determined to find her friend’s murderer. Could the bride-to-be’s visit to Carly’s Little Shop of Potions have a connection? The closer she gets to the truth, the closer the killer gets to her.
Once again Blake’s quirky characters will have you laughing as you try to determine who the killer is among the twists and turns. The characters are well-developed and likable.
The story flows smoothly and at a steady pace keeping you entranced until the end. Blake’s descriptions and rich dialogue will draw you in and make you believe in the paranormal.
ONE POTION IN THE GRAVE is the second installment in the Magic Potion Mystery series, but can be read alone. However, be warned, if you haven’t read the first installment you may bewitched into reading it by the time you finish this one. A fun cozy that will have you laughing as you unmask a killer

ReplyDeletePenney
I hope you enjoy it, Penney!
DeleteI think my favorite comfort food is ice cream.
ReplyDeletekaye.killgore@comcast.net
Gah! I forgot about ice cream in my reply below. Definitely at the top of my list, too. Why is it sooooo good?
DeleteTwo cats!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Southerners like to deep fry everything. Everyone says the deep fried Snickers bars are the best, but I can't bring myself to inject that much fat into me at one time.
However, peanut butter is an excellent choice!
Alex, the cats are Roly and Poly. I adore them. :)
DeleteI can't imagine deep frying a Snickers bar, though I'm intrigued...
MC, first, my deepest sympathies on the death of your mother-in-law. My thoughts are with you and your family today.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for having me here! Always one of my favorite stops. And thank you, thank you for the wonderful review. I'm thrilled you enjoyed my books.
My comfort food? I have a lot too. I'd have to say potato chips. Or cookies. Or Snickers. Ugh. Can't choose.
I live in the south and I'm waiting for deep fried salad to appear on the menu. (Doesn't that sound disgusting?) I do like fried pickles. But my comfort food has to be Halloween mellowcream pumpkins.
ReplyDeleteYes it does sound disgusting! Yikes. I had my first fried pickle in southern Kentucky, oh, five or six years ago. Was surprised how much I liked it! Delicious.
DeleteMason - Thanks for hosting Heather.
ReplyDeleteHeather - There is just something about food that connects you with a culture. And even if it's not directly associated with a given culture, some food just makes it all better, so to speak. Wishing you success.
Thank you, Margot. And I agree completely about the connection to culture. Perfectly said.
DeleteCute cover.
ReplyDeleteAnn
Thank you! It's one of my favorites.
Deletecongrats to Heather on her book, she's a purdy lady!
ReplyDeleteSending positive thoughts to you, Masy! Hope your family is coping well with the sad event
Aw, thanks, Dezmond.
DeleteThanks, Mason, for the platform. Heather, your book sounds delightful. My favorite comfort food is: fried chicken, gravy, biscuits and/or rolls. That's more than one, but it was hard to stop there.
ReplyDeleteThank you! And your comfort food sounds wonderful. (And now I'm craving fried chicken!)
DeleteThis sounds like such a fun book! Great to meet you, Heather.
ReplyDeleteHi, Mason!
Thanks, Carol! And same to you. :)
DeleteIf it has potions AND southern cooking, I'm all over it!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's mostly potions with some cooking mentioned... :)
DeleteSounds good, Heather! I wish you well.
ReplyDeleteHi, Mason :)
Thanks, Wendy!
DeleteI didn't see it listed above, but it could already be there...cornbread is definitely a comfort food...southerners eat it with almost every meal (at least older ones! lol) And grits...grits go well with almost anything too!
ReplyDeleteCornbread is so yummy! Just made some last week to go with white chicken chili. Thanks for the reminder.
DeleteHeather, CONGRATS on your book. I like the cover. My choice of comfort foods when I'm sick is vanilla milk toast or chicken rice soup.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Susanne! I'm also a big fan of chicken rice soup--especially when I'm sick.
DeleteWhat kind of comfort food I choose depends on my mood. Today was a stressful day at work and I ended up eating Mac&Cheese for lunch with extra cheese. Chocolate is always good too. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Glenda! My daughter's favorite comfort food is also mac and cheese--any form of it. Something about all that melted cheese.
DeleteI love Heather's books, no matter the series. She is a fun writer who just loves to entertain us.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks so much Nora!
DeleteNow I'm thinking about hush puppies! I'm a big fan of Heather's books, can't wait to read this one too! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMe, too! And thank you. :)
DeleteLove the theme and the cover. Thank you for the chance to win :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteMy favorite comfort food is cheese, any kind of cheese! Thanks for the great giveaway—I would love to read this book!

ReplyDeleteI love Heather's books, Thank you for the chance to win.
I'm such a macaroni and cheese nut. That's typically the first thing I go to. If that doesn't work I go straight to whatever candy of Reese's is in my fridge at the time. They are so good cold!
ReplyDeleteSounds like this is gonna be a great book. Thanks for the chance to win.
