Brotherhood in Death by J.D. Robb

Author J.D. Robb makes the base plot in BROTHERHOOD IN DEATH riveting even though it’s a formula that has been used by writers in various ways over the years.

The narration by Susan Ericksen will have listeners engrossed in the story from beginning to end. Her vocals give such unique voices to the characters it’s hard to believe she does them all by herself. Her articulation of the enthralling story is spot on filled with emotions and reactions.

When Dennis Mira goes to confront his cousin Edward about trying to see their late grandfather’s brownstone, he’s knocked out. Just before being knocked out, Dennis saw a badly beaten Edward in a chair. When he comes to, Edward is gone.

Dennis has his wife Charlotte, the NYPSD’s top profiler, contact their good friend, Lieutenant Eve Dallas. As Dallas begins to look into the matter she discovers as a former lawyer, judge and senator, Edward has made a lot of enemies over the years. But it’s the dark secrets Edward and a few close buddies are hiding that has Eve scrambling to save victims and criminals alike.

This long running series continues to be jammed pack with suspense, romance, humor and surprises. The story moves fast with a gamut of emotions.

The characters are realistic and well-developed. The protagonist – Eve Dallas – and core case of characters continue to evolve with each new installment. Still a hard-drive, tough-as-nails cop, the author allows Dallas to become a little more refined with each new story. The relationship between Dallas and her sexy husband, Roarke, is explored a bit, as well as her friendship with her partner Peabody and the other fellow cops of her squad.

BROTHERHOOD IN DEATH, book number 42, is a standalone story. However, readers/listeners will have a much greater appreciation for the story and especially the characters if the series is enjoyed in order.

This gripping tale will tug at your heart as the line between victim and villain is stained.

Piper Morgan to the Rescue {+ Giveaway}

I’m super excited today to be participating in this week’s Cover Reveal Blast for PIPER MORGAN TO THE RESCUE by Stephanie Faris.
PIPER MORGAN TO THE RESCUE is Book #3 in Stephanie’s four-book chapter book series from Simon & Schuster's Aladdin line. As part of the cover reveal, Stephanie is joining us to talk about ‘the importance of reviews to authors’ and is hosting a tour-wide giveaway for one of her books. Please see the end of the post for more giveaway details.

Here’s a brief blurb for PIPER MORGAN TO THE RESCUE:
Piper helps some four-legged friends find the perfect home in the third book of the brand-new Piper Morgan series.
Piper is super excited to help out at Bark Street, a local animal shelter in town. Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by adorable puppies and dogs all day? And when Piper sees Taffy, the cutest dog she has ever seen, Piper is determined to find a way to bring Taffy home. But it won’t be easy—especially when she finds out someone else wants to make Taffy a part of their family, too!
Please join me now in welcoming friend, fellow blogger and author Stephanie Faris to Thoughts as she talks about the importance of reviews. Welcome, Stephanie.
We’ve all seen messages urging readers to leave reviews for authors. It’s the best way to show your support for your favorite novelists, people say. But are reviews really all that important?
Reviews are all about Amazon visibility. None of us really know for sure how Amazon chooses which books it displays in search results or recommendations. Most of these sites don’t publicize this information because if they did, authors would find a way to “work the system.” But one thing is clear: reviews boost your visibility on Amazon.
Some say a certain number of five-star reviews will prompt Amazon to recommend your book more often when customers look at similar items. Items with a large number of reviews will also often show up at the top of search rankings on the site. Although reviews aren’t the only factor for this, it does lend a book a certain amount of authenticity.
With both Goodreads and Amazon, a review does something even more valuable than help new readers find a book. It lets the author know that there are readers actually out there. A fellow author once said that she actually loved her first one-star review because it reminded her that people besides her friends and family were reading the book. I completely understood that. There’s nothing more exciting than realizing that someone you’ve never met picked up your book and read it. Okay—there’s one thing more exciting: someone you’ve never met picking up your book, reading it, and loving it!
So do your favorite authors a favor: leave a review. Even if you just give five stars and write “Loved it!” in the comment box, it could make a big difference, especially to a new author.
Stephanie, thanks for joining us today and sharing this look why reviews matter. Even as a book reviewer, I sometimes take for granted what it means to an author to have a review.
Now for those of you who aren’t familiar with Stephanie, here’s a bit of background on her.
Author Stephanie Faris
Stephanie Faris knew she wanted to be an author from a very young age. In fact, her mother often told her to stop reading so much and go outside and play with the other kids. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism, she somehow found herself working in information technology. But she never stopped writing.
Stephanie is the Simon & Schuster author of 30 Days of No Gossip and 25 Roses, as well as the upcoming Piper Morgan series. When she isn’t crafting fiction, she writes for a variety of online websites on the topics of business, technology, and her favorite subject of all—fashion. She lives in Nashville with her husband, a sales executive.
For more on Stephanie and her writing, visit her website and blog. You can also connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
GIVEAWAY DETAILS:
As part of the tour-wide Cover Reveal Blast, Stephanie is giving away an advanced reviewer copy of PIPER MORGAN JOINS THE CIRCUS. The giveaway is open through Sunday, Feb. 28th.

Thanks so much for stopping by today during Stephanie’s visit. Do you leave reviews on Amazon and other sites when you read a book, especially if it’s one you really love? Do you judge a book just by its reviews? Doesn't the cover above just make you smile?

Kiss Me in Christmas {+ Giveaway}

While it may still be cold in some areas I know we’re well past the holiday season, but there’s no place like Christmas, CO, for a feel-good story.

Please join me today as I help celebrate the Blitz Day Launch for KISS ME IN CHRISTMAS by Debbie Mason (February 23, 2016; Forever mass market; Christmas, Colorado series Book #6). As part of the celebration, the lovely folks at Forever is hosting a tour-wide giveaway for five copies of the book. In addition, I’m sharing my thoughts on this delightful story.

Here’s a brief synopsis:

Actress Chloe O'Connor has become America's sweetheart, but back in little Christmas, Colorado, she's still remembered as a shy, awkward schoolgirl. And there's no one she dreads (and secretly wants) to see more than her high school crush, Easton McBride. Just one look from the former star quarterback and it's like she's instantly transformed from daytime drama queen to tongue-tied teenager. She's kissed Hollywood actors and famous cover models, so she can certainly play it cool while turning up the heat, right?
After an injury ended his military career, Easton McBride built a good life in the rugged countryside of his hometown. And the last thing he needs is his quiet solitude shattered by a high-maintenance temptress who isn't anything like the sweet Chloe he misses. While he enjoys the flirtation with this new bold and beautiful woman, he can't help but wonder whether a kiss could have the power to bring back the small-town girl he's grown to love.

KISS ME IN CHRISTMAS is available at Amazon, B&N, iBooks, Google, Kobo, and IndieBound.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Debbie Mason is the bestselling author of the Christmas, Colorado series. Her books have been praised for their "likable characters, clever dialogue and juicy plots" (RT Book Reviews).

She also writes historical paranormals as Debbie Mazzuca. Her MacLeod series has received several nominations for best paranormal as well as a Holt Medallion Award of Merit.

When she isn't writing or reading, Debbie enjoys spending time with her very own real-life hero, their four wonderful children, an adorable grandbaby, and a yappy Yorkie named Bella.

For more on Debbie and her writing, visit her website and connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

MY THOUGHTS:

I had the opportunity to read a print copy of this enchanting book as part of the Blitz Day Launch. Before I finished the book, I also had the chance to listen to the audio version and couldn’t resist it. My thoughts are from both the print and audio copies I would highly recommend both formats.

KISS ME IN CHRISTMAS by Debbie Mason

While one might think of this as a typical romance story, it’s also the underlying messages that author Debbie Mason does an excellent job bringing to the surface.

Narrator Becket Royce does a wonderful job giving unique voices to all the characters. The variations in her cadence adds depth to the characters as she explores their emotions. Her mannerisms were spot on.

Throughout the story, Mason has her protagonist – Chloe O’Connor – dealing with shyness, health issues and family approval. She weaves these issues into the story in ways that readers/listeners can relate to.

While on the surface Chloe appears superficial and a bit of an airhead, she’s really an intelligent, caring woman who’s afraid of being rejected. Sometimes her best intentions where her twin sister is concerned backfires, but she really doesn’t mean harm.

The author has created the typical ‘white knight’ character in the form of Chloe’s high school crush, Easton McBride. But his armor is a bit dented by his own problems he must overcome.

KISS ME IN CHRISTMAS is a light-hearted, feel-good story. It moves at a good pace with a few twists, turns and suspense, as well as lots of laughs. There’s a good mixture of romance and humor throughout the book. The surprises will keep you guessing as to what could possible happen next.
The small town setting is impeccable for this story loaded with family ties and friendship. The quirky residents of the town add charm and enhance the story.

While it might sound like a strange town to visit, Christmas is the perfect place for families to come together and lost loves to find their way home.

Interview with Author Samuel Bjørk {+ Giveaway}

It’s always a pleasure when I can introduce you to a new-to-me author and their latest release. Today I’m delighted to welcome author Samuel Bjørk to Thoughts in Progress to talk about his writing and latest release, I’M TRAVELING ALONE.

The book is an international hit and makes its US debut, as well as launches a propulsive new crime series, tomorrow (Tuesday, February 23) from Viking. I’M TRAVELING ALONE is a global success with rights purchased by 30 countries to date, including recently the UK. It received Starred Reviews from both Booklist and Library Journal, and author Samuel Bjørk is repeatedly compared to Jo Nesbø.

Thanks to the lovely Catherine and the wonderful folks at Viking/Penguin, I have a print copy of the book to giveaway. Please see the end of the post for more details.

Here’s a brief synopsis of I’M TRAVELING ALONE:

One morning in the Norwegian countryside, a six-year-old girl is found hanging lifeless from a tree. She is dressed in doll’s clothes and around her neck is an airline tag that reads, “I’m traveling alone.” This harrowing scene prompts a special homicide unit in Oslo to re-open and reunite veteran police investigators Holger Munch and Mia Krüger. A number “1” is discovered on the fingernail of the dead girl—this is just the beginning. Is the killer connected to the unsolved abduction of an infant girl six years prior, or perhaps with the reclusive Christian sect living in the nearby woods? Is this revenge—and for what? I’M TRAVELING ALONE will keep readers guessing until its explosive conclusion.

Here is an interview with the author Samuel Bjørk that was originally made by German publisher Goldmann.

You are a novelist, playwright, visual artist, songwriter, singer and musician. Could you tell us a little bit more about your variety of engagements and about how you started writing stage plays and novels?

Bjørk:

I grew up in a small town in the middle of Norway with not too much to do. When I was 15 someone started a theatre group for teenagers. I joined, and soon realized that I really loved working with the fictional world. I felt it was almost like a fairytale place where you could run off from reality, and be and do pretty much whatever you wanted. I wrote my first songs there, and my first all-night play there. One thing just led to another: I got a record contract, I got my first novel published, I wrote TV-series and plays for the national stage. I always tried to have fun, and just never stopped working.

I’M TRAVELING ALONE is your debut thriller. It has caused a stir in Scandinavia, has been reviewed enthusiastically and the publication rights have been sold to 22 countries. What fascinated you about writing a thriller after having successfully published the two novels Pepsi Love and Speed for Breakfast in Norway?

Bjørk:

What fascinated me most about the thriller-genre was the fast pace of it all. I have always been the kind of a person who never could sit still and I get bored very easily, so I wanted to try to write something where the excitement never ended, always kept going, one twist after the other. I wanted to write a project that ended up being something that you couldn’t put down or stop reading, and when finished with it you just wanted to read another one.

In I’M TRAVELING ALONE, police investigate a series of murders. The victims are six-year-old children looking forward to their first day of school. You took a risk with a delicate subject, as writing about child murder is a balancing act: readers might easily be overwhelmed or disturbed. Do you share these concerns and if so, did they influence your writing in any way?

Bjørk:

In all my projects I try to be as “true” as possible. That means I try not to work on projects that are too constructed, cruel, or written just to amuse people. When this story came to me, I was terrified in the beginning – I actually had to get up and turn on the lights in my apartment. I decided it needed to be written anyway, and then I of course tried to do it as gently as possible. Not one single act of violence is described in detail in this novel, and that was a choice I made very early on.

Pressure on the police is high to find the murderer as soon as possible. Two of the best investigators are appointed: Holger Munch, a corpulent inspector in his mid-fifties with the highest success rate among chief inspectors, and famous Mia Krüger whose instinct is infallible. Despite her ingenious investigative skills, Mia has quit police service and is now, in the beginning of her thirties, dealing with a personal crisis. Could you tell us something about these main characters and about their relationship?

Bjørk:

It’s a bit funny because when I came up with the story – the plot – none of these characters existed. But I felt that the story was so gruesome and terrifying that I needed the best investigators ever, to be sure this murderer was caught. Mia came to me alone on an island, where she had hidden herself from society and decided to end her own life. She had lost her whole family, including her twin sister Sigrid to a heroin-overdose. Holger Munch is Mia’s opposite in a way, an intelligent but much calmer man, and the two of them have had a very close relationship in the past. Munch had recently lost his job, and the case brings them back together, which turns out to be a very good thing for the both of them.

Gabriel Mørk is an important member of Holger Munch´s team: He is a young computer nerd and hacker and has just started working in the homicide division. How does the story benefit from telling part of it from Mørk´s point of view?

Bjørk:

I love this character, and telling some of the story from his point of view was very important. Gabriel in a way becomes you, the reader, because he has never been a police investigator, has never worked on any cases, and so looking through his eyes it is almost as though you enter the investigator’s world yourself. He asks all the questions and thinks how you might think, if you where put in the same position. I felt using Gabriel’s voice brought the story come closer to you, the reader, than it would have otherwise.

Could you tell us some details about your research, for example how you made yourself familiar with police work and psychological profiling?

Bjørk:

When it comes to the police work I just tried to remember everything I had ever read, books from real cases, and crime novels, or what I had seen on films and in TV-series, and then work from there. Regarding the psychological profiling, I did no research at all. I just tried to be Mia Krüger and do and think as she would. It was pretty scary at times, but I think it worked out quite well.

I’M TRAVELING ALONE impresses with well-conceived scene changes. Settings, rooms, objects and especially the places where the corpses are found are charged with symbolic meaning. Would you agree that your thriller is influenced by your work as a playwright in these aspects?

Bjørk:

I think this novel is influenced by everything I’ve ever done – my plays, my novels, and also the lyrics I’ve written for my music. I’ve always tried to put an extra layer of meaning behind everything, trying to create images that would be colorful, symbolic and very visual, to give the reader the best experience possible every step of the way.

The closer Mia comes to solving the murders, the more she is confronted with her own past. Did you always plan for Mia´s own tragic history to be this essential to the whole plot?

Bjørk:

To be honest, no. The plot and the story came first, and Mia’s character and story came later. But as I started writing, it became more and more clear to me that these two were interwoven in a way that I hadn’t planned at all. I knew who the murderer was but I actually had no idea that Mia was so involved as she turned out to be. At several points while writing the novel, I tried to write as fast as I could, I often stayed up for days, because I myself was very exited to know what was going to happen next. In the end, when the murderer confronts Mia with the real truth, I actually had no idea this was going to happen, or how all the pieces of the stories were so interconnected, before I wrote it.

You give an exact description of the psychological condition and inner development of your main characters. How important is the series of murders and solving them (or crime in general) for the characterization of your protagonists?

Bjørk:

I have thought of this myself, and I think it’s a very difficult question to answer. The characters to me are so rich and interesting that one might think that writing about them without the crimes surrounding them would be possible, but then again, why not have it both ways? I think the combination of their psychological condition and inner life, and the crimes, is sort of the perfect way to get to know, and enjoy these characters.

Even the psychological condition of your minor characters is precisely characterized. Focusing on the lives of young children, you show what kind of experiences might cause emotional damage or mental disorders. Does your thriller convey some sort of social criticism in this aspect?

Bjørk:

The answer to that is a definitive yes. Before I started to write this novel, which is my first genre-novel, I decided that I wouldn’t do it if I couldn’t also in some way portray my views on society in it.

Among the internationally acclaimed and successful contemporary crime novelists there are Scandinavians like HÃ¥kan Nesser and Jo Nesbø. Do you consider your thriller to be part of a literary tradition in this genre?

Bjørk:

I think so, yes, this novel has a lot of the same dark-noir feeling that Scandinavian crime-writers are known for. When that is said, I wanted to give it something extra, try to do something new, maybe go psychologically deeper, and involve social criticism in a way that would maybe make it in part a literary novel, as well as a thriller.

I’M TRAVELING ALONE is the first volume of a planned series about the investigator duo Holger Munch and Mia Krüger. Could you tell us a little about the second thriller and what you are currently working on?

Bjørk:

I am currently writing the second thriller, deep in it at the moment actually, trying to get the characters to do what I want them to do, which is not always easy because they always seem to want to go their own way. Holger Munch is still trying to get over his ex-wife. Mia is out on suspension, needing a psychiatrist’s evaluation before she is allowed back to work. Then a seventeen-year-old girl is found naked in the woods, laid out on a bed of feathers, surrounded by a pentagram of lights, with a white flower in her mouth. I think that is all I want to say about that, for now…

Sinful Science {+ Giveaway}

It’s a pleasure to be participating in author Frankie Bow’s Great Escape Virtual Book Tour for her latest release, SINFUL SCIENCE.

As part of the tour, the author joins us to talk about her writing. In addition, she is offering a tour-wide giveaway for print copies of THE MUSUBI MURDER and THE CASE OF THE DEFUNCT ADJUNCT. Please see the end of the post for additional giveaway details.

Here’s a brief synopsis of SINFUL SCIENCE:

A graduate student from Hawaii visits the tiny bayou town of Sinful, Louisiana to investigate the effects of the oil spill on the local wildlife. Sinful resident Fortune Redding, who happens to be a CIA operative hiding out from a ruthless arms dealer, worries that the nosy newcomer might blow her cover. But he discovers something that even Fortune couldn’t have predicted, unleashing forces that will go to any lengths to protect Sinful’s darkest secret.

Please join me in giving a warm welcome to Frankie. Welcome, Frankie.

When Amazon’s Kindle Worlds opened up the opportunity to write and publish in Jana DeLeon’s Miss Fortune world, I jumped at the chance. I’ve read and loved all seven (so far) of the Miss Fortune books, which chronicle CIA operative Fortune Redding’s adventures going undercover as a retired beauty queen in the tiny bayou town of Sinful, Louisiana.

But first, I had to do my research. I live and write in Hawaii, and the Miss Fortune series is set in Louisiana. I dug in and researched weather patterns, wildlife, and language.

And I found something entirely unexpected. A characteristic New Orleans inflection known as “Yat.”

Now, I’ve been to New Orleans a few times. I’ve bundled up to watch the Mardi Gras floats, sweated through sultry summer nights, savored fresh-shucked oysters and sugary pralines and those innocent-tasting frozen cocktails known as Hurricanes. How could it be that I’d never heard Yat spoken?

The thing is, I probably had. But to me, it just sounded like a New York accent. As National Geographic reporter Caroline Gerdes puts it, “People from New Orleans do not speak with a Southern drawl.”

Yat, which is derived from the phrase “Where ya’at?” evolved in parallel with the New York accent. In the 19th Century, both New Orleans and New York attracted a similar mix of European immigrants, resulting in similar variations on spoken English.

If you are interested in a more technical perspective on the Yat dialect, check out this post on dialectblog.com for a discussion of non-rhoticity, monophthongization, and the tense-lax split.

Or if you’re looking for more casual reading on the Pelican State, check out the Miss Fortune adventures on Kindle Worlds by Riley Blake, Shari Hearn, Morgan Draper, Sam Cheever, Leslie Langtry, Mary Hiker, and more.

Frankie, thank you for visiting with us today and sharing this insight into your writing.

The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones

What happens when the Grim Reaper loses her memory?

If the Reaper is Charlotte “Charley” Davidson, then you find her waiting tables in a little diner in Sleepy Hollow, NY, and going by the name Janey Doerr.

Narrator Lorelei King does a superb job giving distinct voices to the numerous characters. King’s cadence and flare with vocals enhances this tantalizing tale. King’s spot on performance adds depth and dimension to Charley and the gang.

Charley wakes up in the alley behind the diner with no memory. The diner owner gives her a job and she begins trying to figure out who she is and why she can see dead people. Before long she gets to know a new waitress named Cookie and a number of regular customers who all seem to know more about her then she does herself. Charley finds herself especially drawn to the sexy, mysterious customer named Reyes, who is always around and soon becomes a short order cook at the diner.

When the family of a nearby shop owner is held hostage by thieves, Charley/Janey can’t help but get involved. With the help of a teenage ghost, Charley/Janey is determined to free the family even if it means she could get killed. On her quest to help others, Charley learns who she really is.

Author Darynda Jones continues to blend mystery, the paranormal, humor, romance and suspense with a story that will hold you captive. The characters are quirky and likable.

The story flows fast with twists, turns and a few surprises. The paranormal seems every day through the rich descriptions of the author.

THE DIRT ON NINTH GRAVE can be read/listened to on its own. However, for a deeper understanding of the characters and the plot, the series should be read/listened to in order.

With the trio of Jones, King and Davidson you will be laughing out loud one minute and on the edge of your seat in suspense the next.

The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones, Charley Davidson series (Book #9), Narrated by Lorelei King, Macmillan Audio, @2015, ISBN: 978-1427264046, Unabridged, 8 Discs, Run Time: 10 Hours

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope I've enticed you to check out the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. It's a fun series.

Each deals with his own demons. Each has life changing experiences. Each finds out the importance of friendship and family.

EXCERPT:

“Johnny! Goddamn it! Get down!” Richard yelled from his belly, the brush barely hiding him and the other four men on this clusterfuck of a mission. Just as the sound of gunfire erupted, Johnny hit the ground, not even a twitch from his body as bullets whizzed by like a thousand angry, deadly bees.
Richard kept his stomach French-kissing the ground as he crawled over to the young man who was in his charge. Blood covered Johnny’s chest and head.
“Sonofabitch! Johnny, don’t you dare die on me! Do you hear me? Johnny!”
Richard sprang to a sitting position and looked at the clock. The red digital numbers 3:00 am stared angrily back at him.
He ran a shaky hand through the small stubble of hair on his head. Like so many other mornings he woke up drenched in sweat from undying memories: memories of gunfire, yelling, children crying. Memories of clear unblinking eyes and permanent looks of fear frozen into faces as still as marble. The stench of death. Vietnam.

Grace thinks of herself as a "Jill" of most trades and is not afraid to learn new things. "If you can't learn something new each day, there's something wrong," she says.

The ideas for her Acorn Hills series stem from her growing up years as well as the issues she has had to overcome along the way. "I've developed a new romance category...for the over 50 crowd...I'm calling it the salt and pepper genre. My books deal with real life issues, overcoming adversity, maintaining a positive outlook, and so much more. Just because we are 50 years old or older doesn't mean that life stops. We all still want attention and affection and adventure! We want to experience all life has to offer. We use our age as wisdom to share with those around us. We are sexual, sensual, and sensible," Grace explains.

Augustine was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in July of 2003. Her thoughts on that "It may slow me down, but if I can at all do it, I will. Sitting and feeling sorry for yourself isn't the answer...living your life with an open, joy-filled heart is."
