October is the perfect time to unveil the debut covers from the upcoming Whitechapel Paranormal Society series.  Keep reading for a chance to win a $15 Amazon Gift Card.

New Victorian Gothic Horror Series Set in London's East End.

The Whitechapel Paranormal Society is coming in 2017.  Until then, we have these gorgeous covers from Phatpuppy Art Studios and Sacred Oaks Press.

Eeper Weeper Whitechapel Paranormal Society Victorian Horror by E.J. Stevens

Eeper Weeper (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5) by E.J. Stevens

The great and prestigious man of science, Doctor Jameson Foster Hadley had somehow made a mistake. I wasn’t good and I wasn’t normal. His experiment had failed.

The tedium and terrors of Josephine "Jo" Hadley's existence within the stone walls of London's Bethnal Asylum are interrupted by a strange visitor, Cora Drummond, a woman who demands to interview one of the asylum's most insane residents. The patient's rantings include tales of ghosts and demons, but it is the bizarre, near-riotous muttering of prophetic nursery rhymes that follow Jo throughout the asylum wards that is most illuminating to Miss Drummond.

Eeeper Weeper, chimney sweeper. Had a wife, but couldn't keep her...

Days later, Jo and her adoptive father receive an invitation to attend an exclusive tea at the prestigious Whitehall Club. But the request for Jo's attendance is more than it might seem. She has caught the attention of a secret branch of government working directly for the queen.

Will Jo Hadley's unusual talent for inciting prophetic nursery rhymes prove useful to the crown? She is given one chance to demonstrate her worth to the Special Paranormal Research Branch, but this is one mission that even the most highly trained operatives might not survive.

Eeper Weeper is a prequel short story in the Whitechapel Paranormal Society series by award-winning author E.J. Stevens. One for Sorrow (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #1) takes place six years after the prequel short story Eeper Weeper (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5). The Whitechapel Paranormal Society series is a Victorian horror (dreadpunk) series set in London's East End.

One for Sorrow Whitechapel Paranormal Society Victorian Horror by E.J. Stevens

One for Sorrow (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #1) by E.J. Stevens

Afternoon tea had served us up a demon.

It is six years since Josephine "Jo" Hadley joined the ranks of the Special Paranormal Research Branch and three years since the S.P.R.B.'s mission was terminated. After their superiors declare that the supernatural threat is quelled, Jo and her colleagues returned to civilian life with varying degrees of success. But when Jo, Edith, and Flan cross paths with a slogoth demon there is no escaping the terrible truth. The supernatural threat was never defeated.

One for sorrow. Two for mirth. Three for a funeral. Four for a birth. Five for Heaven. Six for Hell. Seven for the Devil, his own self.

Demons and necromancers went into hiding within the labyrinthine warrens of Whitechapel, but after three years of secretly feasting on the souls of London's East End, they are back stronger than ever before. Will the Whitechapel Paranormal Society rise up from the ashes of the S.P.R.B., or will all of London become the Devil's playground?

One for Sorrow is the first full-length novel in the Whitechapel Paranormal Society series by award-winning author E.J. Stevens. One for Sorrow (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #1) takes place six years after the prequel short story Eeper Weeper (Whitechapel Paranormal Society #0.5). We will be having launch parties in homes all over the country. If you might be interested in having the Slightly South of Simple tour to come to your house (or town!) don’t hesitate to email me at kristy@kristywoodsonharvey.com for more information!”

Wondering what SLIGHTLY SOUTH OF SIMPLE is all about. Here’s a brief description:

From the next “major voice in Southern fiction” (New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand) comes the first in an all-new series chronicling the journeys of three sisters and their mother—and a secret from their past that has the potential to tear them apart and reshape their very definition of what it means to be a family.

Caroline Murphy swore she’d never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father’s death, her mother selfishly forced her to move—during her senior year of high school, no less—back to that hick-infested rat trap where she'd spent her childhood summers. But now that her marriage to a New York high society heir has fallen apart in a very public, very embarrassing fashion, a pregnant Caroline decides to escape the gossipmongers with her nine-year-old daughter and head home to her mother, Ansley.
Ansley has always put her three daughters first, especially when she found out that her late husband, despite what he had always promised, left her with next to nothing. Now the proud owner of a charming waterfront design business and finally standing on her own two feet, Ansley welcomes Caroline and her brood back with open arms. But when her second daughter Sloane, whose military husband is overseas, and youngest daughter and successful actress Emerson join the fray, Ansley begins to feel like the piece of herself she had finally found might be slipping from her grasp. Even more discomfiting, when someone from her past reappears in Ansley's life, the secret she’s harbored from her daughters their entire lives might finally be forced into the open.
Exploring the powerful bonds between sisters and mothers and daughters, this engaging novel is filled with Southern charm, emotional drama, and plenty of heart.

I’m Kristy, wife to the boy whose eye caught mine across the restaurant nearly a decade ago. I pronounced him my husband and haven’t looked back since – or doubted my intuition ever again! We have the most incredible four-year-old boy that is pure joy.
I’m a Southerner through and through, a North Carolina girl who loves all four seasons – especially fall in Chapel Hill, where I went to college (Go Tarheels!) and summer in Beaufort, where we spend every free moment.
I blog at Design Chic about how creating a beautiful home can be a catalyst for creating a beautiful life. And I’m blogging right here about absolutely everything else!

Kristy’s first women’s fiction novel, DEAR CAROLINA was released on May 5, 2015 from Berkley/Penguin Random House, and her next novel, LIES AND OTHER ACTS OF LOVE was released this Spring by Berkley/Penguin Random House.

Blurb:

I, Virgil, know that people prefer to remember the happily ever after ending rather than the dark side in every fairytale. I know better. I learned about the dark side of those stories and the consequences. The fairytale I inherited from the Irish star-crossed lovers didn't turn out so well the first time. I had a shot at bringing the souls of the monk and the witch back together last summer and I failed miserably.
How foolish of me to believe in the awakening of the princess thanks to the handsome prince's kiss when I am no prince! Sharing our true nature with Rose, my clueless soulmate, is a necessary evil. I am on a mission. I trust my soul and our attraction to succeed. I don't trust Bruce, her providential knight in shining armor. He's not who he claims to be. Rose can't be with him. She can only fight our chemistry and her growing magical powers for so long. I need to step back into her life. Woo her, with a vengeance. I'm deadly serious.
I, Rose, used to be numb, until I discovered what it was to feel again, thanks to Virgil. He messed up my mind and overwhelmed my heart with unknown sensations. For once, I was willing to welcome some of those irrational emotions. It's unfortunate that Virgil's indecisions sent me to New York with my summer fling.
How foolish of me to believe in the perfect fairytale Bruce offered me when I am no princess! Some say I am an Amazon. My mind is content with my life but my heart yearns for the wolf to change its course. What if I decide to be an Amazon princess? I'm deadly serious.
Could we actually be soulmates, brought back together by an ancient spell, destined to embrace this unorthodox fairytale and a happy ending?
          That would be deadly wicked.

DEADLY EVER AFTER can be found on Goodreads and Amazon Kindle.

Now for an excerpt from this tantalizing book.

“You know Rose, trust my experience, don’t dwell on guilt. I can tell that you’re not comfortable in your own shoes for living with that Bruce guy and not forgetting about… what’s his name?”

“Virgil.” The six letters roll down my tongue like honey. I love saying his name. I love his name. A peculiar name for a peculiar guy. Inspired by Dante. Virgil, the guide through Hell.

As much as I hate to admit it, Meghan, a perfect stranger has a point.

“You ran into Bruce’s arms after Virgil rejected you, twice if I heard you correctly. What’s the big deal? You chose Bruce and he chose you. You’ll figure things out if or when Virgil is back in the picture. This is not the time, and maybe you won’t feel the same when you guys meet again. Or maybe you’ll want to break it off with Bruce. Take this one step at a time. Thinking about Virgil doesn’t mean you don’t have feelings for Bruce. And even if you don’t, at least you have great sex.”

When she says it like this, it sounds so simple.

“Has Bruce ever complained?” I shake my head no. “See, you’re both getting something out of this relationship. Think positive. Enjoy yourself.”

“Meghan’s right, Rose. You’ve been depressed enough for a lifetime!”

“Listening to you… and again, sorry for eavesdropping… let me tell you, stop judging yourself. I bet you think you’re a bitch for using Bruce in a way.”

That’s a way to put it. Let’s see where she’s going.

“In his own way, he’s using you, too. We’re all using people one way or another. You shouldn’t care what other people think. Nobody would question your behavior if you were a guy. They’d call you a Don Juan or a manwhore and look at you in awe. And it’s not like you’re even screwing the whole neighborhood. Look, you only got one life. One chance to test and learn. You will screw up eventually, we all do. But you got back on your own two feet the first time, didn’t you?”

Sure, Guillaume ruined a year of my life because I let him.

“You should have the upper hand. You’re in control of your own life.”

Am I? She sees my doubtful pout.

“Seize the day.” That does ring a bell. I succeeded in forgetting my own motto from Bret Easton Ellis’ book Rock’ n’ Roll, deal with it… “Every girl should. You’re an Amazon, strong, independent. Embrace your life as it is, Rose.”

More words of wisdom. And with that she strides to the cash register. She thanks us for the nice chat and says she’ll see us around, eventually.

“Take care girls.” She waves at us, smiling. Hopefully she’ll have fun with her boyfriend tonight…

As for me, I do miss Virgil. I love my life here but if I had the choice between this and a go with Virgil, I wouldn’t hesitate. I want him completely, flaws included. Demi should know this to understand where I’m coming from.

Why hadn’t I thought about this before? I’m glad I told her. She doesn’t judge. She doesn’t berate. She doesn’t pretend.

Sign of the Green Dragon ..… Revealed

I’d excited and thrilled to be a part of author C. Lee McKenzie’s cover reveal for her upcoming release, SIGN OF THE GREEN DRAGON.

Doesn’t the cover just grab you and transport you to a magical place where you want to learn more? Here’s a synopsis of this fascinating new middle grade novel.

This hasn’t been the best year for Sam, and it just got worse. Right when he thought he’d found a permanent home, his finicky guardian tells him he’s shipping Sam off to private school. This means Sam won’t bat for his team, and if he doesn’t, Haggarty Elementary won’t win the baseball championship again this year. His two teammates, Joey and Roger, are determined to stash him in their secret cave—at least until he brings in the winning run.
While the boys explore the hideout, an earthquake crumbles a wall, revealing a hidden room—and it’s not empty. A dragon-carved chest opens to reveal a human skeleton, its hand-bones clutching a note with a crudely drawn map. At the top of the map is scribbled, 1859.
Sam, Joey and Roger learn about a treasure lying in wait, if only they can locate something called the Dragon Twin, reveal the truth about an old murder, and return a person named Mei Ling to her ancestors in China.
The boys are up for the challenge. But how? They only have the map showing the way to an old mining town, and some strange symbols they can’t understand. None of them can make sense of the note. Who’s Mei Ling? And what the heck is a Dragon Twin?
With time running out before he’s sent packing, Sam and his friends set out on an adventure that has much higher stakes than any baseball championship—one that gets them into trouble with a modern crime, pits them against ancient Chinese dragons, and reveals the true meaning of treasure for each of them.

SIGN OF THE GREEN DRAGON doesn’t release until August, but you can mark it ‘Want to Read’ at Goodreads and pre-order it now at Smashwords, Barnesand Noble, and Kobo.

Hound's Bite Book Excerpt

“Are you saying we should run?” I asked, eyebrows raised.  “Because you should know me better than that.”
“What he’s saying, Princess is that you woke up something too big for the three of us to defeat alone,” Torn said.
That made me pause.  We’d fought faerie queens, pyro demons, a lovesick necromancer, and a psychotic lamia, to name a few.  I may not have come through those battles unscathed, or with all my guts still on the inside, but with my friends at my side, and a new arsenal of wisp powers at my fingertips, I felt nearly invincible.
I looked to Ceff, hoping he’d grab his trident and join me for some quick monster cleanup.  I may not be on the clock for this one, but I didn’t let hungry fae prowl the streets of Harborsmouth.  And if Torn was right, I’d somehow let this one follow us out of Faerie.  No way was I turning tail, no matter how tired I was.
But Ceff didn’t reach for his weapons.
     “We need allies,” he said.
“And larger weapons,” Torn said, with a wink.
The cat sidhe looked excited, which was a clue that I wasn’t going to like the answer to my next question.
“And what monster do we need to gather our allies and weapons against?” I asked.
“Haven’t you guessed yet, Princess?” Torn asked, eyes gleaming.  “We’re not just facing one howling beast.”
Ceff turned to me, closing the space between us.  In the moonlight, I could see my reflection in the dark pools of his kelpie eyes—eyes that were tight with worry.
     “What are they?” I asked.
Ceff’s voice was low and reverent, and tinged with the taint of fear.
     “The Wild Hunt.”

I was born in Utah, but grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri, the fifth of seven children. I attended Southern Virginia University and Brigham Young University, where I studied English and Theater. I now live in Idaho with my husband and four children.

I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself.

My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.
