2.     Victor Bayne from Jordan Castillo Price’s Psycop series. A medium scarred by his experiences—he was hospitalized as a teen, until they realized he really could see dead people—and now working as a cop, he’s an engagingly flawed narrator with a very hot boyfriend!

3.     Percival Whyborne from Jordan L Hawk’s Whyborne & Griffin series. He’s a powerful magic practitioner in an alternative Victorian age and, although not actually British, is certainly repressed enough to be! He’s also engagingly flawed.

4.    Harry Dresden from Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files. He’s a down-at-heel private eye—who does magic. And you have to love that strong, witty first person narration.

5.     Felix Castor from Mike Carey’s eponymous series. Dark, haunted and flawed.

Candice Gilmer from Night Owl Reviews shares her ‘Top 5 Beach Reads.’

For the beach, (or in my case, the lake), that’s my time to catch up on all the books I’ve downloaded to my device. I prefer books that are fun and funny. They can get serious as I get wrapped up in the world, but especially if it’s a new-to-me book, I like it to be lighter and a bit more fun.

As far as some of my favorites to read, here’s a standing list of romance novels I love to read (in no particular order) and I’ve read over and over because I love them.

•    Katie MacAllistar’s Improper English. This book makes me laugh every time. The heroine is a little self-obsessed, and horribly accident prone, but I can totally relate to her antics.

•    Any of the Bridgerton Series by Julia Quinn. I can pick one of these up, any of them, truly, and read them because not only do they crack me up, but the characters bring me to tears… Every time!

•    Tasha Black’s 300 Moons series. Well, they’re stand-alone shifter books, but they’re a series.  Love them. Shifters, spells, and magic, oh my!

•    JC Andrijeski’s Quentin Black series is also awesome. Mystery. Gritty, A hero to squeal over… Yeah. It’s got it all.

•    Anything by Theresa Romain. I love me some historical romance. I can’t write it to save my life—too many details I can screw up. Fairy tales? That’s a different story, though, but historicals have always been a love of mine. Especially fun historicals.

So there you have it. My beach reads.

It’s not that fancy, and like most books, I found them all by random shopping, but it’s a list of just some of the books I love to read, whenever I get a second to relax. (Though that doesn’t happen as often as I’d like, lol) 

Linda Winfree shares her ‘Top 5 Beach Reads.’

1) Once and Always by Judith McNaught – actually, just about any historical by McNaught, but I love the last few chapters of this book. Love.

2) Lucy Monroe’s Harlequin Presents – it doesn’t matter which one, they are all amazing mind-candy. Monroe writes the best grovel ever.

3) Sleepless at Midnight by Jacquie D’Alessandro – love this whole historical series. Smart heroines and infatuated heroes. Intrigue and secrecy – what’s not to love?

4) The Big Girl’s Guide to Buying Lingerie by Amie Stuart – hilarious and hot cowboy romance. I adore all of Stuart’s cowboy romances.

5) Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer – because every list needs at least one great nonfiction read and it doesn’t get much better than this!

“You know Rose, trust my experience, don’t dwell on guilt. I can tell that you’re not comfortable in your own shoes for living with that Bruce guy and not forgetting about… what’s his name?”

As much as I hate to admit it, Meghan, a perfect stranger has a point.

“You ran into Bruce’s arms after Virgil rejected you, twice if I heard you correctly. What’s the big deal? You chose Bruce and he chose you. You’ll figure things out if or when Virgil is back in the picture. This is not the time, and maybe you won’t feel the same when you guys meet again. Or maybe you’ll want to break it off with Bruce. When she says it like this, it sounds so simple.

“Has Bruce ever complained?” I shake my head no. “See, you’re both getting something out of this relationship. Think positive. Enjoy yourself.”

“Meghan’s right, Rose. You’ve been depressed enough for a lifetime!”

“Listening to you… and again, sorry for eavesdropping… let me tell you, stop judging yourself. I bet you think you’re a bitch for using Bruce in a way.”

That’s a way to put it. Let’s see where she’s going.

“In his own way, he’s using you, too. We’re all using people one way or another. You shouldn’t care what other people think. Nobody would question your behavior if you were a guy. They’d call you a Don Juan or a manwhore and look at you in awe. And it’s not like you’re even screwing the whole neighborhood. Look, you only got one life. One chance to test and learn. You will screw up eventually, we all do. But you got back on your own two feet the first time, didn’t you?”

Sure, Guillaume ruined a year of my life because I let him.

“You should have the upper hand. You’re in control of your own life.”

Am I? She sees my doubtful pout.

“Seize the day.” That does ring a bell. I succeeded in forgetting my own motto from Bret Easton Ellis’ book Rock’ n’ Roll, deal with it… “Every girl should. You’re an Amazon, strong, independent. Embrace your life as it is, Rose.”

More words of wisdom. And with that she strides to the cash register. She thanks us for the nice chat and says she’ll see us around, eventually.

“Take care girls.” She waves at us, smiling. Hopefully she’ll have fun with her boyfriend tonight…

As for me, I do miss Virgil. I love my life here but if I had the choice between this and a go with Virgil, I wouldn’t hesitate. I want him completely, flaws included. Demi should know this to understand where I’m coming from.

Why hadn’t I thought about this before? I’m glad I told her. She doesn’t judge. She doesn’t berate. She doesn’t pretend.

Tell us three behind the scenes facts about TESTING THE BOSS.

Mallory:
1 - Evelyn is named after the author Evelyn Adams. Without her help and support, I probably would not be a published author now.
2 - The cover model on TESTING is the same guy who's on TOUCHING. I just loved him so much and, since the characters are brothers who look alike, I made it work.
3 - I was recently in New York City for a few days (previously I'd only been in the city for a few hours at a time). So this is the first book where I could use real life experience to describe the city.

What’s the last book you read and loved?

Mallory:
One of my author friends, Cali MacKay, just published the first part of this really cool project called FORBIDDEN about a woman who turns to a mysterious artist on a private island to keep her safe from her deranged ex. Except the mysterious man is actually a set of twins and she starts falling for both without realizing it. Cali's been telling me all about the story as she was writing it and I couldn't WAIT to get it and read for myself.

Out of all your heroes, who do you want to keep for yourself?

Mallory:
I think Simon from TEASING THE BOSS might be my favorite. Something about a sexy, redhead nerd alpha. Who also likes dogs…

Your next book TAMING THE BOSS will be the final book in the Billionaires in the City series. What are some of the things going through your mind at seeing this series end?

Mallory:
I'm really more excited than anything. Partially because I don't feel like the series is ending, I feel like I'm opening a new chapter. I can't give too many details yet, but the next series will be a little different in tone, but will still have the strong characters and bite of humor and suspense that the BITC series had. So I'm 100% thrilled to bring this new world to my readers. 

What’s next for Mallory Crowe?

Mallory:
The last book in the Billionaire's in the City series, TAMING THE BOSS, is coming out January and that shows the Devereaux's dedicated assistant, Cali, going to northern Maine to drag back the black sheep of the family. Needless to say, he doesn't make things easy for her in the best way possible.
