It’s October in Cobble Cove, and
Alicia is busy preparing for the library’s Halloween party when she learns that
John’s aunt from Florida has died and that John’s cousins and their spouses are
coming to town to bury their mother. The day after the funeral, the caretaker’s
son is found dead by John’s grandfather’s gravestone, from a blow on the head.
The only witness seems to be Sneaky the library cat, who, having left the library,
turned up at Alicia’s door with blood and dirt on him.
As Alicia, Gilly, and Sheriff
Ramsay investigate, a generation of family secrets is uncovered. Are one of the
guests staying at the inn a killer? Will the humans solve the crime, and can
Sneaky, Kittykai, and Salem, the inn’s guest cat, team up to help?
Now for an excerpt for your reading pleasure.
She turned toward her son.
“Your turn, Johnny. The boy shot her a glance that reminded her of her husband
when he was avoiding something. “Why do you need to measure me for a ghost
costume?”
“I know it’s only a sheet,
Johnny, but I don’t want it to be too long that you’ll fall over the hem, and I
need to find out where to cut the eye holes.”
Johnny shrugged and stood
in front of her as she measured his height. “Just hold this here,” she instructed
placing one side of the tape at the top of his head.” As she finished, John
walked through the door. She noticed immediately that something was wrong. He’d
been at his father’s house taking advantage of the pleasant fall weather to
touch up the exterior painting. He wasn’t whistling as he usually did when he
came home, and there was no smile of greeting when he saw her.
Rolling up the tape
measure, as Carol ran back into the room, she asked her two children to go
watch TV in the den while she talked with their father. Johnny ran off behind
his sister, glad to be free again.
“John, what’s wrong. You
look upset,” Alicia said after the kids were out of earshot.
“Mac got a call while I
was painting. It was from his niece in Florida. His sister Gwendolyn, who’d
been in a nursing home down there, passed away. They’re bringing the body up
here for the funeral. Mac’s niece and two nephews will be coming to Cobble
Cove. Mac is making arrangements with Gilly for them to stay at the inn.”

ReplyDeleteEvery library should have a cat.
I wish that my cat talked to me rather than at me, but love the idea of a furry, purry sleuth.
Thank you both.
Your post came through. Thank you for your comments, and I agree that every library should have a cat. Unfortunately, mine doesn't because some patrons are allergic. It's great that I'm able to have a library cat in my series.
DeleteThanks so much for hosting a spot on my book tour and featuring my excerpt.
ReplyDeleteSuch a clever title and fun concept! Best wishes for your release, Debbie.
ReplyDeleteThis does sound like a fun read, and I do like the title! I like stories with family secrets in them, too. Oh, and Sneaky is a great name for a cat! Thanks for sharing, Mason.
