Waiting For Spring by Amanda Cabot

Sometimes I’m first drawn to a book simply by its cover. In the case of 9780800734602WAITING FOR SPRING, I’m glad I was because I discovered a delightful story between the covers.

The young widow Charlotte Harding is trying to make a life for herself and her young son in Cheyenne in 1886. Her dressmaking shop provides for them and makes it easy for her to care for her son David, who is blind. But Charlotte is hiding a secret, one she fears will be the end for her and David if discovered.

Meanwhile, wealthy cattle baron Barrett Landry is testing the political waters. He hopes to be elected senator of the soon-to-be state of Wyoming. Barrett’s advisors stress his need for a suitable wife with connections. His best choice is Miriam Taggert, whose father owns the local newspaper.

When Charlotte and Barrett cross paths, sparks begin to sizzle. While society says they aren’t a good match, they are drawn to each other. Charlotte fears her secret will be revealed and Barrett has his political career to consider. Other forces unknown to them are also working against them.

Author Amanda Cabot does an excellent job transporting readers to the Wyoming territory with an authentic backdrop of the 1880s through her vivid descriptions. She relates the sights and sounds of the era placing the reader in the midst of the adventure. She gives you a real feel for the people and their lifestyles.

The characters are well-developed. Cabot creates characters you will adore and others you will despises for their underhanded ways. She blends suspense, romance, friendship, family, and sacrifice into a charming story that will tug at your heart strings. She also weaves a spiritual lesson of hope and faith throughout the story.

WAITING FOR SPRING is a delightful historical romance that will be hard to put down. This is the second book in Cabot’s Westward Winds series, but is a stand alone read.

  2. I would think it would be much more difficult to write a historical novel. Lots of research.

  3. It really is a pretty cover - and ties in beautifully with the dress-making job of the MC :)

And, Teresa, you're right that there's a lot of research involved, especially when using real locations. Sometimes it feels intimidating, because I worry about someone telling me I got a fact wrong. But it's wonderful when readers enjoy the historical facts and setting.
