The Christmas Pony by Melody Carlson

Eight-year-old Lucy Turnbull knows that times are hard in Maple Grove. But as Christmas 1937 approaches, she can’t help but wish (and pray) for a pony, as well as the boarders her mother says they need.

Lucy lives with her mother and grandmother in the small farming community. Since her father’s death, the Turnbulls turned their homePrint into a boarding house to help make ends meet. Picking up supplies in town, Lucy learns a couple are stranded while their car is being repaired. She tells them about their boarding house. One pray answered so surely she will get her pony too.

Lucy doesn’t want just any pony, but the dapple gray pony the Greenburgs down the road have for sale. She and Smoky are friends and she can’t image anyone else taking him.

With the arrival of the couple at the boarding house, life as the Turnbulls know it becomes busy and confusing. The strangers aren’t married, but merely traveling companions on their way to California. The woman wants to become a movie star and the man is looking for work.

Days before Christmas Lucy finds herself making new wishes and prays that could change her world forever.

THE CHRISTMAS PONY is a charming story that can be read in an afternoon. The story is short and so compelling you won’t be able to put it down.

Author Melody Carlson has combined all the right elements for a heartwarming, feel-good Christmas story. The characters are well-developed, realistic and unforgettable. Told from the youngster’s point of view, the story moves at a smooth, steady pace.

Billed as a historical romance, THE CHRISTMAS PONY is also inspiring, a bit suspenseful, and humorous. This delightful tale can be shared with all ages at any time of the year. If you want to believe the impossible is possible, THE CHRISTMAS PONY is the book to reinforce your faith.

Sunday Salon: The Best Friend by Melody Carlson

It’s time for Sunday Salon where we gather to relaxN5CMD00Z and discuss the various books we’ve read during the past week.

Sunday Salon is the perfect time for the inspirational book I have to share with you today. It’s a YA that is the second book in a series, but is a stand alone read.

THE BEST FRIEND by Melody Carlson

thebestfriendLisha Vance can’t figure out what has happened seemingly overnight. One day she has friends and the next they ignore her.

Even her best friend Janelle doesn’t have time for her. Janelle has become friends with her new neighbor, Chelsea Martin. She tells Lisha that she’s just trying to be a good Christian.

When Riley Atkins, a popular cheerleader, pays attention to Lisha things start to change. Before long Lisha makes the cheerleading squad and has a new group of friends. However, she soon realizes the price for popularity maybe far more than she’s willing to pay.

Author Melody Carlson has captured the highs and lows teenagers face when trying to be popular. She weaves in a message without being overpowering.

Protagonist Lisha Vance is a typical teenage girl facing her high school junior year. Her problems are realistic when she loses her perspective and has doubts about her faith. She learns what friendship really means.

THE BEST FRIEND is an installment in the Life at Kingston High series. It’s aimed at young teens but is a thought-provoking read that adults will find refreshing too. The story is a quick read that may remind adults the trials they faced in high school.
