Eight-year-old Lucy Turnbull knows that times are hard in Maple Grove. But as Christmas 1937 approaches, she can’t help but wish (and pray) for a pony, as well as the boarders her mother says they need.

Lucy lives with her mother and grandmother in the small farming community. Since her father’s death, the Turnbulls turned their home into a boarding house to help make ends meet.
