Black Cat and the Secret in Dewey’s Diary

This is another review I should have already shared with you so I’m here with hat in hand (so to speak) with an apology to the author and to you.

My delay had nothing to do with the quality of this delightful book or the author’s writing (just life). I hope you’ll give this book a closer look.

BLACK CAT and THE SECRET IN DEWEY’S DIARY
By Elaine Faber
* Paperback: 264 pages
* ISBN-10: 1940781256
* ISBN-13: 978-1940781259
* Publisher: Elk Grove Publications (September 6, 2019)
* Cozy Animal Mysteries, Women Sleuths

While Kimberlee searches for lost gold coins in Austria, she attracts the attention of a stalker determined to beat her to the treasure. Back home in Fern Lake, Black Cat and Angel face their own challenges. An elderly woman, bent on revenge, threatens Black Cat and Angel's lives, and a man who disappeared twenty-five years ago has returned to Fern Lake with plans to wreck financial havoc on Kimberlee's family.

Here are my thoughts.

If you like riddles, hidden treasure, and suspense, this story will fit that bill. Add in two cute cats and you have a fascinating book you’ll be hard pressed to put down.

The author has crafted two tales into a tantalizing read. One tale takes readers on a murder mystery journey while the other leads you on a quest for hidden World War II treasure. The author weaves vivid descriptions of landscapes to add depth and even more character to this story.

The two lovable cats are realistic and may remind you of felines you know. The cats’ interaction with each other is adorable, while their influence over the humans is entertaining.

This story blends past and present with beautiful settings, enchanting cats, and unique characters for an enjoyable read. Don’t miss this captivating tale of mystery, history, and so much more.

Thanks for stopping by today. Don’t cats (or pets in general) add something special to a story, especially when they guide us where we should be?

Reaching for Balance by Jemi Fraser

It’s a pleasure today to tell you about the recent release of author Jemi Fraser’s REACHING FOR BALANCE, the fourth installment in her Boo Moose Romance series.

REACHING FOR BALANCE

By Jemi Fraser
*Paperback: 247 pages
*ISBN-10: 1777202523
*ISBN-13: 978-1777202521
*ASIN: B08HY7GWNB
*Multicultural Romances, Romantic Suspense
*Product Dimensions: 6 x 0.62 x 9 inches
*Publisher: Jemi Fraser @ Just Jemi Books (Oct. 13th, 2020)

After a shootout, FBI Agent Rebecca Lin has gained temporary custody of her partner’s son while the man battles to survive. Unused to children, Rebecca decides to hide in Bloo Moose, a town she encountered in a previous case. No one in their right mind would ever look for Rebecca in a fishing town.

Gage LaChance runs LaChance lodge, builds boats, and spends as much time in his woods as possible. After the death of his high-school girlfriend he lives life on the surface, never sinking too deep. Life is good and he plans to keep it that way. When the uptight agent he met last spring arrives with a kid in tow, Gage knows something’s up. Agent Lin couldn’t pull off “camping with a nephew” if a tent popped out of her briefcase. Who camps with a briefcase?

Worried about the kid, and drawn inexplicably to the woman, Gage jumps in to help Rebecca learn to relax. Because she lets her guard down, the people looking for the boy find their way to Bloo Moose. Taking off into the woods, they’ll need Gage’s skills and Rebecca’s cool if they’re going to keep the boy safe. The book contains some strong language and sexy times.

Now my thoughts on this entertaining read.

With some stories you suspect the ending is going to be good but it’s the wonderful journey to get there that makes the book hard to put down.

REACHING FOR BALANCE is just such a book. The characters are realistic and fun to follow along with. There interactions are plausible and a mixture of laughs, suspense, and romance.

The author has created a fascinating setting blended with tantalizing characters. Through vivid descriptions the author draws readers into a captivating world with beautiful scenery and unique residents making it a place you wish you could visit in person.

The love/dislike relationship of the main characters, Rebecca and Gage, will have you laughing, holding your breath, and giving a smile of satisfaction. The characters develop, evolve, and seep into your heart with each turning page.

While this is the fourth book in the Bloo Moose Romance series, it can be read as a standalone. However, don’t be surprised if you have a strong desire to read the other books in the series based on the quirky, lovable characters you encounter.

This is one of those books you’ll want to finish before you put it down, while at the same time wishing that the story would never end. A mixture of suspense, family ties, and romance makes this the perfect read.

Thanks everyone for stopping by today I hope I’ve piqued your interest in this book, as well as the series. Do you ever wish you could visit locations described in books you read?

Murder, Just Because (+ Giveaway)

I am beyond thrilled to welcome author Yolanda Renee to Thoughts in Progress today so we can talk about her latest release, MURDER, JUST BECAUSE.

This mesmerizing thriller is the fifth installment in the author’s Detective Quaid Mysteries series. If you’d like to learn more about the book (and the author) you can follow along on her virtual Blog Tour at MCBook Tours.

The author is offering an awesome tour-wide international giveaway. More information on the giveaway is listed below.

MURDER, JUST BECAUSE
by Yolanda RenĂ©e
◊ Genre: Mystery, Thriller, Suspense
◊ Publisher: Yolanda Renee
◊ Series: Detective Quaid Mysteries
◊ Paperback: 291 pages
◊ Print & eBooks
◊ ISBN-10: 0985820632
◊ ISBN-13: 978-0985820633
◊ Contains explicit sex & graphic violence
"While this book does contain explicit sexual language and graphic violence, it could easily be taken from the daily headlines. The content is plausible and realistic as we look at the world around us. The events in the book are not overly done but give a pragmatic look at the terrifying actions killers can and sometimes do take."

It was a matter of beginner’s luck, but rookie detective Steven Quaid’s career and reputation as an elite investigator skyrocketed when he captured one of the most sadistic serial killers in Alaskan history: Stowy Jenkins, AKA the Snowman. But that was ten years ago.

And now…Jenkins is back. Escaped from prison and on the move, his bloodlust is stronger than ever, and his methods of torture are even more horrifying than before. As his bloody rampage continues and the number of mutilated bodies mounts, terrified Alaskans increasingly doubt Quaid’s ability to catch the killer again. The detective’s reputation is on the line, and he’s going to need a lot more than luck, because this time, Jenkins is driven by more than the thrill of a random kill.

This time, it’s more personal. He’s out for revenge…and his ultimate target is Quaid. In a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, Jenkins starts picking off the people in Quaid’s life…slowly, gradually tightening his circle of corpses and drawing ever closer to the most important person in Quaid’s life...his wife. Can Quaid do the impossible again? Can he outmaneuver the killer, or has the detective's luck finally run out?

Now I’d like to share my thoughts on this captivating story.

While we are faced with a real global pandemic the likes of which might have been envisioned by Stephen King or the late Michael Crichton, we can still enjoy a gripping murder mystery.

Events throughout MURDER, JUST BECAUSE easily relate to daily real-world headlines where a killer preys on unsuspecting victims. The author does an excellent job of putting the reader in the middle of the action. Her vivid descriptions can cause the readers to feel the emotions of the events for both the victims and the killer, as well as the detective.

The story moves at a good pace holding your attention from beginning to the chilling end. The author blends bits of humor and touches of romance throughout the story giving readers a chance to catch their breath before the next surprise. The rich details of the setting bring the story to life and paints a beautiful picture of the area as the tale unfolds.

MURDER, JUST BECAUSE reminded me there are monsters in the real world and how easy it is for them to target people (especially women) even when we think we’re being careful. This story is violent, graphic, and terrifying but not overly done. While it may not be a read for everyone, it will be an eye-opener for those who do. All the elements included are necessary and make for a realistic, heart-pounding story. It will keep you on the edge of your seat holding your breath as you anticipate the next move.

This story is one of those you don’t want to read at night when you are alone, but you can’t put it down because you are drawn into it. You can’t stop yourself as you say, ‘just one more page’ or ‘just one more chapter’ hoping to see who wins – killer or detective.

Easter Hair Hunt by Nancy J. Cohen

This is another review that I have been remiss in sharing with you. Again, it had nothing to do with the book – I thoroughly enjoyed it and this series.

* Series: The Bad Hair Day Mysteries (Book 16)
* Paperback: 302 pages
* Publisher: Orange Grove Press (March 10, 2020)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0999793276
* ISBN-13: 978-0999793275

While the Easter holiday has already been observed this year, the mere mention of it suggests many things to different people. One of the major fun icons of the holiday is the Easter Bunny.

Author Nancy J. Cohen has crafted an intriguing and zany way to feature the Easter Bunny in her latest cozy murder mystery, EASTER HAIR HUNT.

Hairstylist Marla Vail has to put her amateur sleuthing skills to work when she discovers a dead man in an Easter Bunny costume with a stolen Faberge egg nearby. To compound the mystery Marla’s client, Blinky was supposed to be wearing that costume and is now nowhere to be found. This all takes place on a wealthy estate, Tremayne Manor, where there is much more going on than meets the eye.

Despite being seven months pregnant, Marla can’t help but get involved in the case. She provides some useful assistance to her detective husband, Dalton.

As the plot thickens and the case unfolds, Marla and Dalton still find a way to share quality time with each other and their family. With the Easter holiday to celebrate, Marla cooks for her family providing some delicious recipes for readers to try. As Marla’s family core evolves, the characters grow and develop creating a bonding relationship with readers.

The author once again gives readers a tantalizing murder mystery to solve while renewing acquaintances with her delightful characters. The book is the 16th installment in the Bad Hair Day Mysteries but can be read on its own without leaving readers in the dark.

The story moves at a good pace and holds your attention to the very end. The characters are well developed, a bit quirky, and might remind you of real people you know. The plot will draw you in and could have you grinning a few times before the end.

This story will fill you reading basket with entertainment, charming characters, plot twists, tasty recipes, and a cozy murder mystery to solve.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. Do you enjoy holiday-themed stores? Have you read any of the Bad Hair Day Mysteries? Ladies, isn’t that a great name for a series?

Receiving a complimentary copy of this book did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Now my thoughts on this heartfelt story though I don’t think I can do it justice with my words.

When dealing with a person who has dementia you don’t always know what to expect, what to do or what to say. Author Jemi Fraser has summed up those feelings, along with some trial and error events, in her release, DANCING WITH DEMENTIA.

The author shares her family’s struggles and bright moments of coming to terms with her mother’s dementia, as well as medical issues faced by her stepfather. In this touching account, the author doesn’t hold back any punches as she explains the journey from realizing what was happening to reaching a new normal where the entire family can be as happy as possible given the circumstance. She notes the struggles of having the disease diagnosed while many of the symptoms can be thought of as just what happens when one gets older.

If you have ever had to or if you are currently carrying for someone with dementia, this is a must read. It will help you understand you’re not alone in the issues you face and the choices you make. If your life hasn’t been touched by this terrible disease, this is a must read. It will help you see the signs and know what some of the hurdles you can face will be.

The author has also shared the humor and delight that can still be found when faced with this disease. She explains that laughter is sometimes the only way to go to help you cope with what you are faced with.

There are tips and helpful hints throughout the book. The author has laid her heart on the line sharing the ups and downs her family has faced and continues to face.

This is a heartfelt, tender story that needed to be told and shared as more and more face this situation. The author shares this story with insight and gentleness while faced with a difficult personal experience. You may need a box of tissue handy if you are tender-hearted as the author takes you on a profound journey into how dementia impacts not only the individual, but their family and friends.

Brewed Awakening by Cleo Coyle

This is a post that I should have shared with you early last month but due to sickness in the family (I’ll talk about that in a later post), crazy work schedules and the holidays I’m running a month behind.

*BREWED AWAKENING
*By Cleo Coyle
*Series: A Coffeehouse Mystery (Book 18)
*Hardcover: 368 pages
*Publisher: Berkley (December 3, 2019)
*Language: English
*ISBN-10: 0451488873
*ISBN-13: 978-0451488879

First, let me share a synopsis of the story:
When coffeehouse manager Clare Cosi awakens on a bench in Washington Square Park, she has no idea she's been missing for days, or that her friends and family have been frantic with worry. Now that she's back, everyone is overjoyed, including a handsome NYPD detective who claims to be her fiancé. But to Mike Quinn's crushing distress, Clare doesn't remember him, or much of anything about the last fifteen years of her life.
Clare's missing memory is tied to a crime she witnessed. An acquaintance of Clare's elegant employer--and fellow member of an exclusive Gotham circle known as "The Ladies Who Brunch"--invited Clare to her posh hotel to sample gourmet wedding cakes. After their indulgent tasting, they headed to the parking garage, where a camera captured a masked figure with a gun confronting the hotel heiress with Clare looking on. Did the kidnapper take Clare, too? The camera went dark, just like Clare's memory. Soon authorities grow suspicious. Is Clare really a victim? Or merely acting like one? Evidence is mounting that she set the woman up.
To clear her name, Clare must find a way to reclaim her memories and rescue the heiress before this high-stakes crime ends in tragedy. Otherwise, instead of walking down the aisle, Clare may find herself perp-walking to prison as an accomplice to kidnapping and murder.

Now for my thoughts:

Tackling realistic issues and adding a dose of mystery topped off with delicious recipes is what this author does with creative writing and fascinating characters.

Just when you might think a long-running series could begin to get stale, the author takes you on an intriguing journey fraught with twists, turns and surprises. Readers get an in-depth look at the characters as they traverse through danger and mystery. The plot might also give you pause to wonder what if you were in protagonist Clare Cosi’s place.

As the story unfolds readers are drawn into the world of the protagonist who has lost her short-term memory. Told from multiple viewpoints, the story is filled with humor, intrigue, alluring characters (old and new) and a well-rounded tale of excitement. The family atmosphere of The Village Blend is felt as the group tries to help Clare each in their own unique way. The colorful and quirky characters that make up the coffeehouse add depth to the story. Whether you are a returning fan or new to the series, you can follow along as the story unfolds.

Fast-pace and entertaining, this story will hold you spellbound from beginning to end. An extra bonus to the plot’s drama is the tasty recipes and helpful tips included at the end. You don’t have to be a coffee lover to enjoy this book (and the series), just a fan of heart-pounding murder mysteries.

******

I'd like to say a special thanks to Author Cleo Coyle (the writing team of husband and wife, Alice Alfonsi and Marc Cerasini) for the opportunity to read this delightful book. I've been a huge fan of the Coffeehouse Mysteries since the first book and have learned so much about coffee and preparing it. Thanks guys, y'all are the best!

Thanks everyone for stopping by today. I hope you’ll add this to your reading list for January if you haven’t already read it. Do you enjoy books that make you stop and say, “Wow, what would I do if that happened to me”?

My Mostly Happy Life

Let me start by apologizing. This review is long overdue and should have been shared with you last year.

I apologize again for that. The delay wasn’t because of the book or the author even though I don’t think I can ever do the author’s work justice by my reviews (she’s super talented). I just got caught up in my own world of events, thought I had done it and then let it slip by. When I realized I hadn’t posted a review, unfortunately I let it slip by again. Just wanted you to know this is a “must read” book even if the review is extremely late.

* My Mostly Happy Life, Autobiography of a Climbing Tree
* By Shelly Reuben
* Paperback: 292 pages
* Publisher: BookBaby (April 27, 2018)
* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0988418150
* ISBN-13: 978-0988418158

My thoughts ….

Have you ever looked at a tree and wondered how old it is? Ever wondered about the changes that might have happened around that tree or what could have happened to the tree itself throughout its life span?

The writing has a smooth, rhythmic flow that takes the reader on a mesmerizing journey. The characters are strong, believable and well developed. The plot holds your attention from beginning to end. The reader becomes a part of the story feeling the complex emotions throughout the story.

 *****

  Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you will check out this book. It’s an amazing story and I’ve been amiss in telling you about it. Have you ever had any thoughts about a tree or did or do you have a favorite tree you go to when you want to relax?
