Life is looking up for magazine crafts editor Anastasia Pollack.

Newly engaged, she and photojournalist fiancĂ© Zack Barnes are on a winter cruise with her family, compliments of a Christmas gift from her half-brother-in-law. Son Alex’s girlfriend and her father have also joined them.

Shortly after boarding the ship, Anastasia is approached by a man with an unusual interest in her engagement ring. When she tells Zack of her encounter, he suggests the man might be a jewel thief scouting for his next mark. But before Anastasia can point the man out to Zack, the would-be thief approaches him, revealing his true motivation. Long-buried secrets now threaten the well-being of everyone Anastasia holds dear. And that’s before the first dead body turns up.

Craft projects included.

Now join me in giving a warm welcome to Lois as she answers those questions. Welcome, Lois.

What led you to write a series with a sewing theme?

Lois:

The Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries is a cozy mystery series where my amateur sleuth is the crafts editor at a women’s magazine. I chose this profession for her because I wanted a crafting series where I wasn’t limited to one type of craft, such as quilting, needlepoint, or scrapbooking. Each book in the series features a different craft.

A Sew Deadly Cruise is the latest book in the series of nine books and three novellas. As the title indicates, this one features sewing crafts, but other books have featured decoupage, knitting and crochet, Christmas ornaments, paper crafts, and many other crafts.

How do you go about researching for your books?

Lois:

I’m a news junkie. The ideas for most of the plots and subplots in my books have sprung from actual events I’ve read about or seen on the news. I keep a 3-ring binder that’s crammed with news clippings. Whenever I’m stuck for an idea, I’ll sit down with that binder and start reading through the articles until I’m inspired by one of them.

What's the most unusual thing you've learned writing this series?

Lois:

I’ve learned I can make people laugh. I’m someone who either never remembers the punchline to a joke or totally mangles it. Writing this series has unleased my latent sense of humor. When I began writing years ago, I was penning very dark romantic suspense novels. I had no idea there was this funny person lurking inside me, waiting for the right moment to make her appearance.

List two things you hope readers will take away or remember from reading your book.

Lois:

I hope that my books provide readers with an enjoyable few hours of mystery and laughter. We can all use an escape from what’s going on in the world around us right now. If my books enable readers a few hours of respite from their worries, I consider that a job well done. And if when they finish a book, they want to read another in the series, that’s an added plus.

Lois, thanks for stopping by today and sharing this insight into your writing.
