When Love Calls By Lorna Seilstad

If you enjoy being transported back in time to the early 1900s for a coverstory of love and determination then you will adore WHEN LOVE CALLS by Lorna Seilstad.

The first installment in Seilstad’s new series, The Gregory Sisters, focuses on the eldest sister, Hannah Gregory.

Hannah’s parents have died and she has had to leave law school in order to care for her two younger sisters, Charlotte and Tessa. Just as she has found a job, the bank forecloses on their family farm. The sisters are forced to move into a small cottage, taking only a few of their possessions with them.

Hannah’s job is as a switchboard operator. Sounds easy enough but the Hello Girls must follow strict, sometimes bewildering, rules. Following rules is one thing Hannah isn’t good at. Throw into the mix the bank’s handsome young lawyer Lincoln Cole and you have the makings of a delightful story.

Lincoln tries to assist the sisters in small ways, but Hannah won’t accept charity and is determined to repay him for his help. But she finds she does need his help when a friend gets in trouble with the law. Hannah is determined to care for her sisters, but will she do it at the cost of her own happiness?

The author has an eye for historical details that places the reader in the midst of the early 1900s. She has created characters that are likable, well-developed and realistic. She has crafted a story that combines love of family, determination, and friendship with a delicate romance and a tinge of inspirational foundation. The results is a charming book that will remind readers how sweet romance can be.

Hannah is feisty and resilient as the protagonist, but her sisters also play large roles in the story and add to the colorful storyline. Seilstad’s endearing characters will have readers longing for the next installment in the series. WHEN LOVE CALLS, a feel-good story you don’t want to miss.

  2. I used to relieve a receptionist (in the 60s) who was also the switchboard operator with all those cords that you connect people with - no easy task. How times have changed the past 100 years.
