Showing Support

racism-clipart-can-stock-photo_csp7008446Isn’t it amazing how people come together sometimes in support of a cause, project or celebration?

I think it’s a good thing when people try and help their neighbor/fellow man (woman) in some way. Like when a community goes all out to celebrate a founder’s day or some such event.

With that in mind I want to tell you about an event I learned of this past week. I’m sure this probably goes on in a lot of areas, but this is my first time learning about such an event that I can participate in.

Got ya wondering, don’t I? Well the Alabama Tourism Department is hosting a 10-day Alabama Restaurant Week Aug. 14-23 (yeah, I know there’s only 7 days in a week, but they want to celebrate a bit longer). This is an event where restaurants throughout the state sign up and offer a lunch and/or dinner menu at a special price. It’s a great way for locally owned and operated restaurants (especially small mom and pop operations) to get noticed and for customers to enjoy tasty meals at special rates.

In the spirit of coming together to support each other, I hope you’ll pop over and visit the new food blog a friend of mine recently started. The site is The Surprised Gourmet and his latest post gives more details on this special restaurant event. You’ll also find some tasty dishes he has prepared. Be sure to check back often as he’ll be adding various new recipes weekly.

In celebration of the weekend and the dog days of summer, I hope you have a chance to visit your favorite restaurant. Or perhaps you’ll have a chance to discover a new favorite place and meet some new friends.

Thanks for dropping by today. Have a great weekend. Does your hometown or state sponsor a restaurant event like this? Do you have a locally owned and operated restaurant (or other type business) that you enjoy visiting?

  1. We have a similar event in the summer months. A food fair. The restaurants participating come to one of the local parks and cook and serve their food there...

    1. Elephant's Child, that sounds like such a fun event. Outdoors with food, family and friends - now that's the way to enjoy summer.

  2. Oh, M ason, that sounds like such fun! It sounds like a fantastic way for local restaurants to get some publicity (and some new fans) and for people to explore new places. Glad you shared this.

  3. I don't think our state does anything like that. They should though. Some of the best restaurants in our town our individual and family-owned.

  4. Restaurant weeks are spectacular! We have two. One in March (to celebrate the end of winter), and another in November (to celebrate the end of the month-long Halloween craziness). There’s also A Taste of Salem and a Local Seafood Festival. We like to eat here. :)
