Author Joanne DeMaio’s True Blend

I’m delighted today to share my thoughts on fellow blogger and author Joanne DeMaio’s latest release.

TRUE BLEND by Joanne DeMaio

True Blend coverAuthor Joanne DeMaio tackles the tough question – can a person do something terribly wrong for the right reason – in her latest release, TRUE BLEND.

DeMaio quickly pulls readers into this story when the innocence of a child is threatened. She holds you spellbound as the story unfolds and tugs at your heartstrings every step of the way.

Three minutes on a bright sunny morning turned the world of Amy Trewist, a young widow, upside down in the quaint town of Addison, CT. Her two-year-old daughter, Grace is kidnapped as part of an elaborate bank robbery. As Grace is snatched away, Amy comes face to face with one of the armed men, who urges her to ‘be strong.’

It’s a typical day for George Carbone out with his brother for a day of gambling and fun with their friends. The day quickly turns tragic when George ends up in a bank parking lot just as an armored truck robbery takes place. He does the only thing he knows to do, protect an innocent child at all cost.

George is soon able to return the young girl to her mother and the lives of all three become intertwined. As the days of summer pass away, the trio become closer. But dark secrets, guilt and recurring flashbacks threaten their happiness. It's time once again for George to do the right thing, no matter the cost.

Through DeMaio’s rich descriptions, the scenes materialize before you. As George learns of the intricate plans surrounding the robbery and its aftermath, the events seem to come to life in slow motion making you wonder about the chain of events in real life crimes.

The characters are well-developed, realistic and very likable. DeMaio portrays their emotions in such a way readers will feel their joy and anguish.

TRUE BLEND is a splendidly compiled story of love, honor, compassion, loyalty and strength. It’s heartwarming and suspenseful in a fast pace captivating style. The setting, the characters and their dilemmas will pull you in for a hometown feel of friends and family you won’t want to leave.

Sunday Salon: Silence of the Wolf and Blindsided

Can you believe we’ve come to the final Sunday Salon of March?

I don’t know about where you are, but for me the weather isn’t feeling much like spring yet. I keep hoping the sun will come out and the temperature will go up at least a few degrees.

This week for Sunday Salon I have an interesting paranormal romance to share with you and a fun women’s fiction audio. One of the things I enjoy about author Terry Spear’s paranormal books is that she makes them so realistic and she always has an intriguing plot to keep you guessing. I enjoy author Fern Michaels women’s fiction series for the well-blended characters and crazy antics she combines.

Top off that latest cup of coffee, find a comfortable chair, prop your feet up and relax. It’s time to discuss the books we’ve read or listened to lately.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF by Terry Spear

Silence of the Wolf coverAnyone who skips over author Terry Spear’s Heart of the Wolf series because it’s listed as a paranormal romance is missing out on stories packed with depth and intrigue, fascinating characters, stirring surroundings, and heartwarming relationships.

In the latest installment in the series, SILENCE OF THE WOLF, Spear tackles issues of sibling rivalry, family outcast, and finding acceptance. She shows how some families pull together giving love and support, while others turn on each other thinking only of themselves.

Since the death of her parents, Elizabeth Wildwood has been on her own. Her half-brother and uncle want nothing to do with her because of her ‘mixed’ half-wolf, half-coyote blood. She is willing to risk everything, including her life, to get the evidence of who killed her parents.

Elizabeth ventures into gray wolf territory for the evidence and to write an article on the Silver Town Ski Resort. She finds the town is wolf-run by the Silver brothers and their pack. Her encounter with sub-leader Tom Silver is life changing.

The last thing Tom Silver is interested in is finding a mate and settling down like his brothers. When he has to escort Elizabeth to the slopes for her article, he discovers her scent and memory linger with him long after she’s gone.

When it appears Elizabeth’s life is in danger, Tom and his family are there to protect and help her. It’s a strange new concept for Elizabeth to have someone in her corner. She has to discover who killed her parents and if she can trust someone loves her for who she really is.

The story is heartwarming and funny. It’s filled with suspense and steamy romance. It’s a mesmerizing story of love, family and friendship that will have you believing in wolf shifters. The characters are likable and realistic. The story moves at a quick pace and is hard to put down. Spear has incorporated her vast research of wolves into this tantalizing tale. Her rich descriptions of the setting brings the town to life.

SILENCE OF THE WOLF is the 13th installment in the Heart of the Wolf series, but can be read on its own. New readers to the series won’t be left in the dark and returning fans will be able to catch up with old friends from past installments.

The romance is sizzling, the characters charismatic, and the plot suspenseful for an entertaining, heart-pounding, page turner that will hold you captive until the very end.

BLINDSIDED by Fern Michaels

Blindsided coverLaughter, excitement, suspense, a bit of danger and a lot of revenge run amuck when the ladies gather at Pinewood.

The ladies of author Fern Michaels’ Sisterhood series aren’t ones to fade quietly into the background. Though it has been awhile since the ladies were called upon to dispense their own brand of justice, they are always ready for a new challenge.

Narrator Laural Merlington does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. Her distinct mannerisms and vocalizations have you believing there’s more than one narrator. She does a great job of switching not only genders, but vast age differences. Merlington adds enjoyable dimensions to the characters and enhances the author’s story.

This go-around only the older members of the Sisterhood are called into action at the request of Maggie Spritzer, an honorary member of the Sisterhood and former editor-in-chief of The Post. Maggie senses something is not right with two Maryland judges. She believes the judges, identical twins Celeste and Eunice Ciprani, have a moneymaking racket going on by sending youthful offenders to ruthless boot camps on charges that deserve far lesser sentences.

Powerful and merciless, the Ciprani twins run their town with an iron fist. Taking them down won’t be easy, but then the Sisterhood has never backed away from a challenge. Maggie, Myra, Annie and the gang come up with a plan that brings justice to the innocent and deals severely with the very guilty judges.

Once again Michaels has crafted a story of suspense, intrigue and laughter. The main characters are well-developed and likable, while the villains possess all the traits you hate for a well-balanced group. The story flows smoothly and quickly with a few surprises along the way and a good blend of humor woven throughout.

The steadfast band of friends once again continue their renowned brand of dispensing justice for an entertaining and spellbinding story.

BLINDSIDED is the 22nd installment in the Sisterhood series. It can be read/listened to on its own. However, to get a better grasp of the Sisterhood and their actions, a few earlier installments in the series should be read/listened to.

This story will have you laughing, holding your breath and cheering for the underdog. Can’t wait to see what happens next with the Sisterhood.

Blindsided by Fern Michaels, Sisterhood Series Book #22, Performed by Laural Merlington, Brilliance Audio, @2014, ISBN: 978-1480566156, Unabridged, 8 Discs, Listening Time: 10 Hours

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I do appreciate you each and every time you drop by. Hope you’re having a wonderful Sunday and find time to enjoy a book. What’s on your nightstand to read this week?

WILDE RIDERS (An Old Town Country Romance)

FOUR WILDE BROTHERS…ONE WILDE COUNTRY BAND

I'm delighted to be participating in author Savannah Young's WILDE RIDERS Blitz. In celebration of the blitz, Savannah is ofering an awesome giveaway. Please see the end of the post for details.
WILDE RIDERS is the first novel in a spicy new contemporary romance series about four sexy brothers, their small-town bar and their local country band. WILDE RIDERS can be read as a STAND ALONE NOVEL or as part of the SERIES.
Cooper Wilde spent his entire adolescence counting the days until he could escape rural northwest New Jersey. Now at 26, he can’t believe he’s coming back. But his late father’s bar, Haymakers, is in financial trouble and his older brother, Jake, has asked for Cooper’s help.
Riley Smith, 25, is fresh out of her Ivy League MBA program and wants to make an impression on her employer, H & C Bank. Her first solo assignment is a fraud investigation on a business loan they made to Haymakers.
Even though Old Town is less than 90 minutes from New York City, Riley feels like she’s stepped into another world in this remote, one-bar town. Riley can’t wait to do her business and get back to the city as quickly as her sports car will take her…until she meets Cooper Wilde. He’s not like the other guys in this rural town and Riley feels inexplicably attracted to him.

EXCERPT

The drive into New Jersey is exhausting. My only saving grace is that most of the traffic is going into the city instead of out of the city like I am. You’ve got to love those bridge and tunnel guys. I wouldn’t date one but I have a little bit of respect for them. The commute into Manhattan turns a nine hour work day into an eleven hour one, if you’re lucky.
I can feel my stomach start to knot as I get further away from the city and further away from civilization. Pretty soon I’ll be in the sticks surrounded by woods and farmland. I can almost smell the manure that will no doubt take days to completely rid from my nasal passages. I pray that I don’t run into any animals, especially cows, which are huge, smelly and completely freak me out. The only live animals I ever care to see have to fit comfortably in a handbag, like a Chihuahua or Teacup Poodle, for example.
I have an appointment with a man named Jake Wilde. He asked me to come early, before the place opens at noon, so he can give me his full attention. I try to imagine what someone named Jake Wilde would look like and all I can come up with is an old gunslinger like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven.
As I pull into Old Town the place looks exactly like I thought it would. The buildings in the town square are old and I image the place hasn’t changed much in the last hundred years or so.
Haymakers is just past the town square, down the hill from the deli, next to the gas station. Those were the exact directions I was given, in those words. I take that to mean the town only has one gas station and one deli.
When I pull into the parking lot, there’s only one other vehicle sitting there. It’s an old beat-up Dodge Ram. Nothing like fitting the country bumpkin stereotype like a glove. Then I have a brief moment of panic and wonder if it’s safe to park my BMW in the dirt lot. Then I remind myself where I am. Who is going to mess with it in the middle of the day? A stray deer from the woods out back? The only thing I probably have to worry about is it getting dusty.
I take in a deep breath. I have to be thankful there’s no manure smell yet. The quicker you do this, I remind myself, the quicker you can get back to the lovely asphalt jungle you call home.
I’m hit with a gust of wind as soon as I get out of my car. How is it possible that Old Town is even windier than lower Manhattan? I didn’t think I’d ever find a place windier than Wall Street. Even the Windy City didn’t seem this windy when I had business in Chicago.
When I enter the bar, I try to smooth down my thick hair, which I know is probably a complete mess from the gust. I’m surprised by the homey feel of the place. How could someone like me possibly feel at home in a country bar? Even if I was wearing jeans and cowboy boots, if I even owned jeans and cowboy boots, I wouldn’t fit in at a place like this.
I hear someone clear his throat and I turn to see a guy about my age, mid-twenties, standing next to me. I can’t help my surprise when I see he’s wearing khakis and a polo shirt, like he just stepped off of a golf course. He looks as out of place in this country bar as I feel.
“Are you Jake Wilde?” I ask.
The guy gives me the faintest hint of a smile but it’s almost as if it pains him to give that much. His deep brown eyes look even more distressed and I can’t help but wonder what’s behind those sad eyes.
He rakes his fingers through his thick dark hair. “A little windy out, isn’t it?”
My hand automatically goes to my hair and I try to casually flatten it down again. I imagine I must look like I just stepped out of a wind tunnel.
“Your hair looks fine,” the guy tries to assure me. But he’s got that hint of a smile on his face again and it makes me wonder if he’s lying just to make me feel better.
“I’m Cooper Wilde,” the guy says as he offers a hand.
I don’t know why I suddenly feel nervous about shaking it. It’s a business meeting. That’s what people do. But the way this guy is looking at me gives me the feeling that he might be interested in more than just business.
But I’m not, I remind myself. Not only because I’ve all but sworn off men, I’m here to do a job. I’ve been working for H & C Bank for two years and this is my first solo assignment as a lead investigator. If I continue to do well, I’ll be well on my way to becoming a Vice President before I turn thirty. I don’t need a man to throw me off my career trajectory. And definitely not some guy in a country bar in rural New Jersey.
I take his hand and give it a quick shake but I can’t bring myself to look into his smoldering eyes again. “I’m Riley Smith.”
          “I figured that,” Cooper says.
          “Why is that?”
That hint of a smile has returned to his face again. “We don’t often get women in business suits in the bar.”
I’m not sure why I’m suddenly overcome with the urge to get a real smile out of Cooper Wilde. I don’t know even know the guy but it somehow seems important. I get the feeling he hasn’t really smiled in a while and it’s long overdue.
Not that I’ve had much occasion for real smiles myself lately.

The Mid-Atlantic Sex Ring is in ruins after Abby’s interviews with the police. The organization is eager to exact their revenge before her testimony dismantles the multi-million dollar operation for good.
Abby’s safety rests in the hands of former US Marshal, Jerrod Quinn. Serious-minded and obsessed with protocol, Ethan Cooke Security’s newest agent finds himself dealing with more than he bargains for when he agrees to take on his beautiful, free-spirited client.
As the trial date nears, Abby’s case takes a dangerous turn. Abby and Jerrod soon discover themselves in a situation neither of them expect while Jerrod fights to stop the ring from silencing Abby once and for all.

Read an excerpt from JUSTICE FOR ABBY:

The black bag was ripped from her head, along with several strands of her hair. Abby blinked against the bold light of the naked bulbs hanging from the low ceiling. She glanced around the dingy space in shock as her gaze traveled from girl to girl—six young teens, dirty, bruised, and malnourished, staring up at her through bland eyes while they sat or lay on filthy mattresses on the dirt floor. “What—”
“In.” Victor shoved Abby into a small, windowless room, slamming the door, locking her in with a rusty scrape of something sliding against the heavy metal barrier.
She walked on shaky legs to the wooden chair in the corner and collapsed to the uncomfortable seat, clutching her arms around her waist, shivering as she bit hard on her bottom lip while tears rained down her cheeks. Where was she? What was this place? She shuddered, remembering six sets of listless eyes holding hers. Nothing good was happening here.
She covered her face with trembling hands and gave into her sobs, relieving the worst of her dread, wishing for nothing more than to be home with Lex and Livy. Thinking of her sister and niece, she forced away her tears, taking several deep breaths of stale air. If she wanted to see her family again she needed to pull herself together. She couldn’t get herself out of this—whatever this was—if she didn’t think. There had to be a way out. Her eyes darted around the barely lit space, searching for a weapon, another exit, anything.
The door opened, and she rushed to her feet as a tall, well-built man stood haloed in the beam of light from the room beyond. Abby blinked as he stepped forward. “Renzo?” She bolted from the corner and fell against her friend’s firm chest as a wave or relief flooded her. “Oh, thank god.”
His strong arms wrapped around her.
“I’m so glad you’re here. I don’t know what’s going on. I need help. Can you help me?”
“What happened?” He eased her back some, but she refused to release him from her grip.
“My family—we were on our way home from Virginia Beach. We stopped at a rest area, and two men grabbed me and brought me here.”
“You were with your sister and niece?”
“Yes, Alexa and Olivia. I think they’re okay, but I need to call and make sure. Will you get me out of here?”
     “Of course.”
She could hardly believe she was leaving. “Thank you. Thank you.” She hugged Renzo again as tears of gratitude flowed free. “I knew this had to be some sort of mistake.”
“Come on, let’s get you home.” He wrapped his arm around her waist and walked with her to the door. “Oh, wait.” He stopped.
     “What?”
     “I can’t let you go.”

Did you enjoy the excerpt? Would you like to read more? You can read the first chapter on Cate’s website, www.catebeauman.com, or you can finish the whole book here!

Join me in welcoming, Cate as she tells us about the inspiration behind JUSTICE FOR ABBY.

JUSTICE FOR ABBY is one of my favorite stories in The Bodyguards of L.A. County series (Okay, they all are, but I really love Abby and Jerrod!). I truly enjoyed writing their adventure. Oftentimes I found myself caught up in Abby’s rollercoaster ride as she heals from her experiences as a survivor of the Mid-Atlantic Sex Ring. At times I cried with her, and at others, I laughed. She’s so strong and sweet, but she’s vulnerable and struggling. Enter Jerrod Quinn, the perfect man to provide her protection and help her overcome her ordeal in his own quiet way.

Although Abby’s story is one of fiction, sex trafficking is a very real crisis for millions of young women, men, and children all over the globe. My idea for this novel came after a night in front of the television watching crime television. A segment showcasing the mysterious disappearance of a young woman named Amy Bradley bothered me greatly. She vanished from a cruise ship in March of 1998 while vacationing with her family. Unfortunately, Amy has yet to be found, but she is believed to be alive, stuck in the horrific world of human sex trafficking. I immediately began my research into this very troubling epidemic and shortly after wrote Forever Alexa, the story of Abby’s sister dealing with the aftermath of Abby’s disappearance. My readers have requested Abby’s story, and I felt the need to share her experience.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Abby and Jerrod as much as I enjoyed writing these two fantastic characters.

Cate, thanks for sharing the inspiration behind JUSTICE FOR ABBY. Knowing the backstory adds intrigue to the story for me.

Now Cate shares more about writing this latest installment with the Unofficial JUSTICE FOR ABBY soundtrack.

Music always plays a huge part in my writing process. With two boys and two dogs in the house, music helps me “get lost” in my story. I typically listen to Pandora or YouTube and put together a playlist of songs that I feel represent the characters or the situations they face as the novel unfolds. Here are a few of the songs that I had on “repeat” while I created Jerrod and Abby’s story! You can listen to them on my website www.catebeauman.com.

The soundtrack, of sorts, for Justice For Abby:
· Applause by Lady Gaga
· Safe and Sound by Capital Cities
· She Is by Ben Rector
· I Should Go by Levi Kreis
· The Other Side by Jason Derulo
· Why Don’t You Love Me? by Hot Chelle Rae ft. Demi Lovato
· We Owned The Night by Lady Antebellum
· Stars Go Blue by Tim McGraw
· Open Your Eyes by Snow Patrol
· Come Back by Pearl Jam
· By Your Side by Tenth Avenue North
· Everything Has Changed by Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran
