The characters are likable and realistic. The authors show a professional and personal side to the protagonist giving him more depth. The secondary characters are also well-developed.

The story is told in under three hours but is full of suspense and intrigue. The shortness of the story doesn’t take away from the enjoyment. The action will keep you on your toes as the suspense builds.

CHASE is an entertaining tale perfect for a quick read/listen to when you’re short on time.

You might say this story is a bit like Alien mixed with a sinister form of The Abyss. The suspense is high, the unknown incredible, and the mission extremely dangerous.

Put these elements together and you have one unbelievable adrenaline-fueled thriller enhanced by the narration of David W. Collins. His mannerisms and cadence is spot on. He gives unique voices to each character. Collins boosts the suspense with his vocalization.

This is an enjoyable mix of science fiction and adventure with tidbits of science mingled in. It gives you pause to wonder, ‘what if.’

Through the authors’ vivid descriptions, you feel like you’re on the ocean as the characters ride the waves to race again time. The story moves at a fast pace, but holds you spellbound all the way. The suspense is high as twists and turns keep you fearing the worst.

The characters are well-developed and realistic. They are a mix that you find likable and love to hate.

BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT is a stand-alone story even though it’s a long awaited follow up to a story. New readers/listeners won’t be left in the dark as the authors’ provide enough background details to make the story flow smoothly.

This is a pulse-pounding thriller you don’t want to end. Preston and Child may have delayed 15 years in writing this sequel to THE ICE LIMIT, but it was well worth the wait.

The story is a good mix of police procedure, mystery and suspense. The story flows quickly and smoothly. Told in BookShots format, the story can be listened to in under three hours. The shortness of the tale doesn’t lessen its appeal.

The core cast of characters of the Women’s Murder Club series are on hand, but new readers/listeners won’t be left in the dark not knowing their history. This is a stand-alone story. The characters are likable and well-developed.

THE TRIAL will keep you on your toes until the surprise ending. It’s intense, suspenseful and entertaining.

Author Deborah Heal: I Hear Voices in my Head {+ Giveaway}

Sometimes after reading a good book I can’t remember later whether I actually read it or watched the movie. That’s because a talented author creates word pictures in our minds. They follow the age-old “Show, Don’t Tell” rule. Avoiding most adjectives and adverbs, they choose strong verbs and specific nouns, words that come to the page prepared to work. But consider this little story: 

It was a nice day. Everyone was happy because the weather turned out to be good. Since we made the time pass by doing some interesting things, even the ride was a lot of fun. We got there at lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon having a terrific time. Although everyone was tired at the end of the day, we agreed that we’d like to do the same thing again next year.

No one would remember a book like that for a minute, because there’s no showing at all— not one piece of concrete imagery in the whole thing. It’s as vague as a Jack Handy “Fuzzy Memory” story, only without the humor. (You can read an example of his humor here.)
 
In order to avoid fuzzy writing, I spend considerable time imagining the characters into being before I ever begin to write a novel. I ponder each physical feature and personality trait until, like Pinocchio, they become real boys and girls—at least to me. I can hear exactly how they sound. (Yes, I have voices in my head.) And each character is different, of course. 

Abby, the protagonist of my TIME AND AGAIN history mystery trilogy, started out naive and a little judgmental toward Merrideth, the bratty eleven-year-old she was supposed to tutor for the summer. By the end of the story she has learned a lot about life. Her boyfriend John is not nearly as serious as she and always joking around, so I got a big kick out of him. (I am always immensely amused by what my characters say and do.) Even the secondary and minor characters came alive in my mind: Mrs. Arnold, the salt-of-the-earth neighbor. 

Michael, the little boy with the speech impediment. The spunky octogenarian twins known as the Old Dears and Bertram White, the red-faced wife abuser in UNCLAIMED LEGACY. Ned, the runaway slave and Brother Greenfield, the sweet-natured and wise minister in EVERY HILL AND MOUNTAIN. If I do my job right, the characters and story will come alive in my readers’ minds, too.
 
Of course, there are always things that interrupt the transmission of ideas between senders and the receivers. Perfect communication will only be possible in Heaven. It’s one of the things I most look forward to. In Heaven, no one will ever misunderstand. Everyone will always “get it.” We probably won’t even need words at all. But until then, I do the best I can to write stories that communicate well. 

Then when the writing is done, I publish the book, sending all my characters out into the cold, cruel world, hoping they’ll make friends with readers who will love them as much as I do. Will readers “get them”? Until and unless the book gets reviews, I really have no idea. (Read about the importance of review here.)

But I have discovered a sure-fire way of finding out: have the story turned into an audiobook!

I was so relieved and gratified that my narrator Michelle Babb “got” my TIME AND AGAIN history mystery trilogy. She turned the words I had put on the page into living, breathing characters doing real actions. In some cases with minor characters, she “got it” even more than I did, interpreting the character more fully than even I saw them.
 
Deborah, thanks for joining us and sharing your insight into bringing characters to live. I have to agree that if an author does an excellent job, it’s sometimes hard to remember if it was a book or movie.

      “’Tis none of your concern.” Anora noticed him stiffen a little and the look of disdain on his face. She added, “His intentions are honorable if ‘tis any of your business, but what of yours?”
      Niall was the one she had to worry about. The Highlander with the hot-blooded gaze and the heated touch. Matthew had never been more than just a friend. If he'd ever looked at her or touched her the way this man had, she might have been married to him already. She shook her head at the very notion.
      “If my purpose was other than honorable, you would have known about it long before this.” A hint of teasing shown in his eyes as Niall's mouth curved marginally.
      Her traitorous heart did a little leap. “You are leaving after supper, are you not?” He could not mean to stay any longer than that.

THE HIGHLANDER by Terry Spear

I’ve often thought the only thing that could make one of author Terry Spear’s books better would be to hear it read by someone with the accent of the country it is set in.

Narrator Rosaline Ashford proves my point in Spear’s THE HIGHLANDER. Ashford does an excellent job bringing the characters to life. Her accents and mannerisms enhances this delightful story.

Spear has a way of placing the reader/listener in not only the area she’s writing about, but also the time period. Her eye for detail and vivid descriptions surround you as the story envelopes you. Her characters are realistic and captivating holding your attention until the end.

Sent on a mission to locate a Frenchwoman of nobility and escort her to Craigly Castle for safety, Niall MacNeill and his friend, Gunnolf, encounter another Highland clan also seeking the woman. The other clan, however, wants to sell the woman to the highest bidder. Following a battle with the others, Niall and Gunnolf are separated. Niall takes refuge in a sheepherder’s cottage to rest and heal.

The sheepherder turns out to be Anora, a shepherdess, who enjoys living alone and doesn’t like Highlanders. She does tend to his wounds and offers him shelter for the night. As he learns more about her, Niall believes he has found the woman he was seeking. He must take her to the castle for her own safety, but will he lose his heart and happiness in the process?

Spear creates a strong-willed heroine with a feisty outlook and a tender heart. She combines that with a sexy Highlander, perils of danger, a touch of mystery, a dash of humor, and a steamy romance for a well-balanced story.

The story flows smoothly and quickly keeping readers/listeners spellbound. THE HIGHLANDER is the fifth book in the Highlanders series, but can be read on its own. This is an intriguing and amusing tale of romance with a touch of chivalry.

Whimsey: A Novel on Audio, Plus a Giveaway

WHIMSEY is a story of hope and affirmation, about families and best girlfriends, connections and feelings. It's about the things in life that make us happy and the things that scare us to death. And the people who walk through life with us. 

The cover of WHIMSEY is eye catching and so intriguing. I ask Kaye to tell us about how it was created and how the images relate to the story.

Kaye:
I love the cover so much. Again, this image was with me almost from the beginning. In the novel, a great deal of the story revolves around the character of Aunt Zoe. Aunt Zoe lives in a house in Whimsey that is the house many of us dream of. It's a beautiful Queen Anne Victorian style home, but not one that is the least bit intimidating. It's a welcoming, loving place where the protagonist, Emma, spent a lot of her time during her growing up years and where her friends felt free to come and go at will. Aunt Zoe's home reflected her open, generous heart and that big front porch always seemed to have enough chairs and good food to welcome everyone who happened by. 

The ghostly image you see is Great Aunt Elizabeth who is also a key figure in the story. She's being greeted by Pyewacket the cat and Fred the corgi. The little pixie you see there is Earlene. Earlene is just a mess and a bit of an imp. She has a fondness for tight fitting designing clothes and Louboutin stilettos. 

I went on line to some of the royalty free image sites and purchased a license for the images and then turned them over to a friend of mine who is a brilliant designer, Jill Harman Smith. She worked her magic and we came up with THE perfect cover. 

Mason - What can readers look forward to next from you? 

Kaye:
For the readers who enjoyed Whimsey, they can look forward to the second book about Whimsey, which I'm now working on. There are 5 women who I refer to in the book as "The Wicked Women of Whimsey." They each have a story and I hope to share them all.

The winner will be selected by Random.Org and I will notify the winner by email with the subject line ‘Thoughts in Progress Whimsey Audio.’ The winner will have 72 hours to respond to the email with their mailing information or to notify me they’ve already won the book elsewhere. If there isn’t a response in 72 hours, a new winner will be selected.
