Lou Belcher: Pet Blogger

It’s my pleasure to welcome author Lou Belcher back to Thoughts in Progress as the special guest blogger.

Lou is the author of THE ZEN OF MAX, but she’s here today to talk about another one of her passions - pet blogging. Lou is a blogger, writer, editor, and photographer. Almost two years ago, she gave her cat Max a blog and Twitter site in hopes of breaking through the trouble she was having finishing a book about him. Now, Max's blog has taken on a life of its own with Max's voice and personality coming through loud and clear. Today's post is about her start as a pet blogger and the purpose she has found in this endeavor. Lou is here to talk about “Pet Blogging: A Labor of Love.”

I didn't set out to be a pet blogger. Initially, I dipped a toe into the blogosphere by starting Brevard Art News (a blog about art in Brevard, Florida) and Florida Book News (a blog about Florida writers, their books, writing organizations and events).

Instantly, I found I enjoyed the process of blogging. Therefore, it was only natural when I reached a sticking point in a book I was writing that I put up a blog in an attempt to get un-stuck.

You see, before my cat Max died in 2008, I had started a book about him. After he died, I just couldn't work on it. One day, I decided I had to finish it. To ease back into writing about him, I gave Max his own blog.

It did the trick. At first, my writing was a bit stiff, so I set out to find other pet bloggers. I (or Max, that is) began to talk to them by commenting on their blogs and through chatting with them on Twitter (@MaxTheQuiltCat). Soon enough, Max found his voice.

Max's blog is diverse. He blogs about daily events, such as the time a fish fell from the
sky near a local restaurant and the staff made Lucky (the fish) into their pet. That day, Max put out an alert to all cats to get out in their yards: "Fish are falling from the sky!" He also blogs about pet products, writes book reviews, and blogs about anything that has anything to do with dogs, cats, and pets of all varieties. He loves to write poetry, but he doesn't do it that often. And, he writes short stories in the first person where he is the hero, of course.

There are pet blogs in many formats. At MaxTheQuiltCat.com, Max blogs in the first person. That works well for him. Other bloggers blog about their pets in the third person, and still others blog by posting photos or drawings with captions or youtube videos.

No matter the format, pet blogs seem to have several common threads: to raise awareness on how valuable pets are, to inform others about the connectedness of all species, and to help raise funds and/or find forever homes for animals who need them. In addition, I've found one important common factor: pet bloggers really care about one another. They are quick to help each other, to send followers to one another, and to offer assistance when another blogger seems to be having a rough patch.

Of all my blogs, I consistently find Max's the easiest and most fun to write... of course, that might be because he practically writes it himself. Please feel free to visit Max and
leave comments for him. He loves to hear what others think. http://www.maxthequiltcat.com

Lou, thanks for stopping by and sharing about Max’s blog. I think pet blogs are a great part of blogdom. There are several pet blogs that I try to visit daily and you’re right, they are very caring people.

Here’s a little background on Lou. She started her writing career through editing and has written four non-fiction books. Recently she wrote Ready, Set, Tweet: A Speedy Guide to Twitter. The book was well-received, but she would not recommend writing a book about current technology. Ready, Set, Tweet was published in February 2010. It provided detailed instructions on how to get up and going on Twitter. A mere six months after publication, Twitter changed its format, making the new book obsolete.

Lou began blogging several years ago. Two of her blogs are specifically designed to help artists and writers. Two are personal blogs about her writing and photography, and almost two years ago, she became a pet blogger when she set up Max’s blog. One of the purposes of Max's blog is to support animal adoption efforts through periodic posts about animals needing homes and through donating a portion of the proceeds from her book, THE ZEN OF MAX (A MEMOIR OF GREAT WISDOM AND MANY NAPS) to agencies devoted to finding forever homes for pets. THE ZEN OF MAX is available through Amazon.com. The link for that is: http://www.amazon.com/Zen-Max-memoir-great-wisdom/dp/1456310992/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_3

I’ve read a number of cozy mysteries, as well as books in other genres, that include pets as minor characters. What are your thoughts on including pets in your writing - books and blogs?

Sunday Salon: First Reviews of 2011

It’s time for Sunday Salon where we gather around our computers to share some of the interesting books we’ve read recently.

This being the first Sunday Salon of 2011, I’d like to tell you about the last book I read in 2010 and the first book I finished in 2011. In keeping with encouraging others to read, New Year’s Eve I gave books to my young cousins so they each had a new book to begin 2011 with. The last book I read in 2010 was among those I passed on to them.

SOPHIA’S DREAM by Land Wilson

This is a delightful book to help parents explain to young children the environmental impact on the earth in a manner they can understand.

Sophia befriends the moon and one night notices that he is blue. When she asks what’s wrong, the moon tells her to visit him in her dreams. That night Sophia dreams of flying to moon and there she can see what he sees - earth in despair because of dirty water, land and air. The moon explains how one person can make a difference in helping the earth.

The book is beautifully illustrated by Sue Cornelison. The illustrations have a magical quality and would make beautiful pictures for a child’s room.

Author Land Wilson delivers an important message in a way children will remember and learn from. Be sure to check out the book trailer at the end of this post.

Sophia‘s Dream by Land Wilson, Illustrations by Sue Cornelison, Little Pickle Press, @2010, ISBN: 978-0-9829938-1-1, Hardcover, 32 pages

FTC Full Disclosure - I won this book from the The Blood-Red Pencil. I wasn’t asked to do a review of the book, but thought it would be a wonderful addition to any child’s library and wanted to share my thoughts on it. Receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

Now a book I started in 2010 and finished 1-1-11.

THE ZEN OF MAX (A MEMOIR OF GREAT WISDOM
AND MANY NAPS) by Lou Belcher

This was a book I looked forward to reading but had reservations about at the same time. The reservations came from me being tender-hearted, not from my uncertainty about the subject or the author's writing.

Author Lou Belcher shares her thoughts on living with her cat, Max, for the majority of his 18½ years of life. The author began the book before Max’s passing, but didn’t finish it until several years afterwards.

This is a must read for any cat (or animal) lover. If you are ’owned’ by a cat, you will be able to relate to a number of Max’s adventures. In fact, during most of the time I was reading THE ZEN OF MAX, I was comforted by my two darlings (Little One and Gum Drop) taking turns lying in my lap.

The author tells how Max came to be a part of her life and how the bond between them grew. She also tells how Max gave love and support to her ailing mother prior to her passing away. In addition, the author explains how Max became known as 'Max the Quilt Cat’ and includes several photos of Max at different stages of his life.

Throughout the book are 'Lessons Learned’ from Max. Two of my favorites are:
* “Sometimes when you think someone is pretending to love you more than they do, they end up loving you as much as you could hope for.”
* “Sometimes it’s enough just to be touching someone else.”

Max and Lou - their journey is one of laughter, love, learning, and a few tears. Yes I did have to have a box of tissue handy, but for the most part it’s an uplifting and funny book. It will tug at your heart strings while making you appreciate your four-legged furry family that much more.

THE ZEN OF MAX is a wonderful example of how we can learn love, understanding, and patience from our cats.

Max now has his own blog, www.MaxtheQuiltCat.com and a portion of the proceeds from THE ZEN OF MAX will go to agencies devoted to finding forever homes for pets.

The Zen of Max (A Memoir of Great Wisdom and Many Naps) by Lou Belcher, CreateSpace, @2010, ISBN: 9781456310998, Paperback, 128 pages

FTC Full Disclosure - This book was sent to me by the author. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.

Now here’s the book trailer for Sophia’s Dream, enjoy.

Guest Blogger, Lou Belcher

Painting of Max by Susan Kessler
It’s my pleasure to welcome author Lou Belcher as the special guest blogger here today at Thoughts in Progress.

Lou’s latest release is THE ZEN OF MAX (A MEMOIR OF GREAT WISDOM AND MANY NAPS). Here’s a brief synopsis: “It's the story of an ordinary cat and the extraordinary difference he made throughout his life. In addition to recounting the many noteworthy events of their life together, THE ZEN OF MAX conveys the many universal lessons Lou learned from Max.

As a memoir, it shows the humorous and touching sides of life over the almost two decades they spent together. As a book of personal growth, it will touch your heart and offer words of wisdom from an unexpected source.”

Lou is also a fellow blogger and she joins us today to answer some questions about her writing.

Mason: How did you come up with the idea of writing a book about Max?

Lou: Max just had such a big personality, as a writer I couldn't resist writing about him. Toward the end of his life, I felt an urgency to put the highlights together while he was still with me.

Mason: Did you finish then?

Lou: No, the book was unfinished when he died in 2008. He was 18 1/2  when he died and had been with me for 16 of those years. I just couldn't work on the book for quite a while. I don't know if you have experienced it or not, but when you lose a pet, it takes quite a lot out of you. Anyway, I put the book aside for about a year.

Mason: What prompted you to finish it?

Lou: In 2009, I started working on it periodically, but just couldn't get back into it fully. I always intended to finish it but wasn't in a great hurry. So, I wrote the Twitter book as many of the local folks who followed my blogs were having trouble getting up and going on Twitter.

When I signed up to participate in a two-day book fair during the ArtWorks Festival in Eau Gallie, Florida, I intended to take
the Twitter book to that. With the Twitter book obsolete, I suddenly had all the motivation I needed to finish Max's book. I threw myself in gear, spent many late hours and finished THE ZEN OF MAX with just enough time to send it to my designer and to the printer.

Mason: What has surprised you the most about the reaction to THE ZEN OF MAX?

Lou: Everything. I'm having great fun with it. Other pet bloggers have been very supportive and have blogged about the book. I'm certainly grateful for that. It went over well at the book fair. And, I've had a couple of signings since then. At those, people not only want a signed copy of the book, but requested to have their pictures taken with Flat Max (a life-size image of him I take with me to signings) too.

I guess I'm most pleasantly surprised that people don't think I'm the crazy cat lady, but they have embraced the purpose of the book... to spread a smile or two and to tie those smiles to a few lessons learned.

Mason: Can you give us an example of a Lesson Learned?

Lou: Well, sure. As the title of the book hints, Max was devoted to his naps. So, here's a Lesson Learned regarding naps: Embrace life—the conscious and the unconscious parts—fully. That was Max. He did everything with full gusto.

Another Lesson Learned that is one of my favorites: Sometimes there is no perfect answer. You just go with the most logical solution and hope for the best.

Lou, thanks so much for guest blogging here today. And yes, I do understand the heartbreak and loss one suffers from losing a family pet. It does take a lot out of you.

Now for a bit of background on Lou. She started her writing career through editing. Initially, she worked as a book editor for an on-line publishing company and then began working on her own as a freelance writer, editor and photographer. Lou has written four non-fiction books. Most recently she wrote READY, SET, TWEET: A SPEEDY GUIDE TO TWITTER. The book was well-received, but she would not recommend writing a book about current technology. READY, SET, TWEET was published in February 2010 with detailed screenshots and detailed instructions to illustrate how to get up and going on Twitter. A mere six months after publication, Twitter changed its format, making the new book obsolete.

Lou began blogging several years ago. Two of her blogs are specifically designed to help artists and writers. Brevard Art News (http://www.brevardartnews.com) is devoted to bringing attention to the works of the artists and their organizations in Brevard County, Florida. The other blog is Florida Book News (http://www.floridabooknews.com). It is devoted to helping Florida writers get the word out about their books or about their organizations.

Lou also has two personal blogs: Writer's Creative Studio where she blogs about the writing process and inspiration and Lou Belcher Gallery where she participates in several on-line photo challenges and displays her photography.

It's only logical that when Lou set up a blog for Max (http://www.maxthequiltcat.com), she ensured that it supported animal adoption efforts through periodic posts about animals needing homes and through donating a portion of the proceeds from THE ZEN OF MAX to agencies devoted to finding forever homes for pets.

THE ZEN OF MAX is is available through Amazon.com. The link for that is:
