Psychic

I have a most interesting book to tell you about, as well as a ‘new-to-me’ author I’m delighted to introduce you to. The book, PSYCHIC by T.S. Rose, will be released by Apprentice House Press on June the 7th.

Alpha Moore is telepathic, but her skills amount to far more than just the ability to read the thoughts of others—she can also convince people to change their minds, think differently, and even reverse previous decisions by 180 degrees, though using that amount of energy drains her and she is still wracked with guilt knowing that her talents contributed to her own mother’s death.

As Alpha hides away in a care home for young people, Sunday, another psychic, traces her thoughts and reports her existence to the head of an institution. Joining up with Sunday and this institution, Alpha must then help to unmask a mole in the organization and avert a terrorist attack that threatens a train, desperately hoping that her and Sunday’s gifts together can avert the impending tragedy.

Combining sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and thriller elements into one hard-to-put-down thrill ride, PSYCHIC has adult and YA crossover appeal and weaves in real-life issues of populism and racism.

Now let me tell you a bit about the author before they have so graciously answered some questions about writing and the book. Set in Britain, it is written by a mother-daughter duo who live in London.

T Rose is the daughter of S Rose, her co-author. T is an accomplished writer. Having earned five academic prizes, she graduated from Queen Mary University (London) before becoming an English teacher. Over the years, she has worked with various charities focusing on promoting reading as well as organizing events and activities to help children and adults in need.

She was born in England and now lives in a rural town surrounded by trees and nature, but which also lies only twenty-five minutes by train from the bustling metropolis of London.

S Rose was born in South Africa, but partially schooled in Germany and the UK. She lived for a while in Kissimmee, Florida, but now lives near London. She has published a gardening story for young children, as well as a fantasy tale for young adults.

Her career as a Town Clerk, working for the good of the community, keeps her exceptionally busy, so writing takes place during stolen moments just before bed.

Please join me in welcoming T.S. Rose to Thoughts in Progress. Thanks for joining us and answering these questions.

How do you work together as writers?

Sharon writes the overall plot, and breaks it down into chapters, then Sharon and Tammy each take a chapter to work on. Tammy is better at dialogue scenes, whilst Sharon tends to focus on the high action elements. Because Sharon proposes the initial plot, she tends to put a first face to the characters, but before writing Tammy will tear these apart, sometimes changing the sex of a character, getting rid of one altogether, or rewriting their backstory. Tammy, being considerably younger than her mother Sharon, is more in touch with youthful characters. She also teaches at a secondary school, and is in contact with students every day, so her feel for the language of the younger generation is excellent. Sharon’s strengths lie in the creation of intricate plots, with twists and turns that leave the reader spinning. Once a chapter is written we both review this together.

Do you ever fight about your work?

Yes, but because we appreciate each other’s strengths and weaknesses we leave the final decision to the person with the best skill in that area. We tend to fight like adults, proposing points, debating our viewpoints in a grown-up manner. Sometimes we have to sleep on it, before coming to a resolution. It has meant that the typical mother/daughter relationship has had to alter to a relationship that is more collegial. It’s been a great experience for us.

Of those outside your family, who has had the most influence on your life?

In terms of worldwide figures, Sharon has met and worked with Nelson Mandela, who will always be a great influence on her thoughts. For Tammy, it’s King Ludwig II, Von Bayern. Whilst being a dreadful ruler, who ignored the threats of war to his country, he focussed on romantic projects, creating a number of wonderful architectural buildings, and his palaces still remain as great natural treasures and tributes to peace in Bavaria.

Given unlimited resources what would you do to make the world a better place to live in?

Less politics, more ability to create cross country/cross continental think-tanks to solve the world’s problems. For example, a radical solution to global warming could be found with this approach. Africa cries out for being reforested, but only a cross country approach could achieve this.

Who is your favourite author?

Tammy – Oscar Wilde, Sharon – Stephen King. For Sharon, reading has always been a great love. She absorbed hundreds of books in her childhood – anything from war stories to cowboys, and from horror to romance. Stephen King has to be a favourite author, who influenced much of her writing style. Tammy is more academic in her reading, and for her Oscar Wilde offers the sense of humour she seeks.

What is your favourite genre?

Sharon – anything, but especially science fiction/fantasy. Tammy – horror.

Politics are a big part of PSYCHIC. In your opinion, does government/democracy work?

No, it’s deeply flawed, with political parties creating political spin that masks the truth about everything. The only good part about it is that it is better than any of the other alternatives, and it does leave people with the ability to think for themselves, should they choose to. Sadly, many people don’t, they just absorb the sound bites as gospel.

CassaDark – Mystery in Space

I'm delighted today to welcome author, fellow blogger, friend and Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh to Thoughts in Progress to talk about his latest release, CassaDark.

Welcome, Alex. What are your thoughts on “Mystery in Space.”

When most people want to wrap themselves in a mystery, they reach for a book in the mystery or thriller. But that’s not the only genre capable of boasting a mystery or two. Multiple mysteries reside in my latest science fiction book, CassaDark. The hero, Bassan, encounters many unknowns.

Let me highlight some!

The first revolves around a man Bassan meets on Procura Space Station. He’s a Kintal like Bassan, but who is Zendar really? Is he telling the truth when he claims the people on his planet are dying? What does he really want and can he be trusted?

Once Bassan reaches Zendar’s planet, Ugar, the mystery continues. In the settlement of Jaree, he wonders–where are all the dying people? Zendar had shown him visions of hundreds ill. Where are they?

Then Bassan begins to question the true motivation of the leaders of Jaree. Why do they really need him? What secrets are they hiding? Bassan’s unique connection to ancient Kintal technology–does that come into play?

I could keep going, but I don’t want to reveal too many of the mysteries! Suffice to say, there are many unknown layers and not all of them truthful.

So, if you fancy a bit of mystery in space, please check out CassaDark.

Alex, thanks for sharing this. CassaDark is a great combination of mystery and science.

CassaDark
By Alex J. Cavanaugh

“Cavanaugh returns to the world of his Cassa Series…for a fourth inventive space opera.” – Publisher’s Weekly

His world is unraveling…

Bassan’s father is stepping down from command. His best friend almost dies when Bassan freezes. Now, he’s being sent across the galaxy to speak at an important conference. Despite saving the eleven races years ago, he’s paralyzed by doubt. Could things get any worse?

Once there, new acquaintance Zendar convinces Bassan to visit his planet for a humanitarian mission. Bassan’s special connection to ancient technology is the key to saving Zendar’s people. One problem though—it’s a prisoner planet.

On Ugar, he discovers things aren’t so straightforward. As each truth reveals itself, the situation grows more desperate. If he can’t find the right answers, he might die along with Zendar’s people. Can Bassan summon the courage to be a hero again?

Becoming Brooklyn (+ Giveaway)

Becoming Brooklyn
By Amanda Deich
Publication date: January 5th, 2021
Genres: Contemporary, Science Fiction, Young Adult

Eighteen-year-old Brooklyn never knew her father. Rex Blackburn died in the 9/11 attacks four months before she was born.

And even though she never met him, she always dreamed about what he must have been like before he died. In her mind, he was a hero.

Little did she know.

After an attack at a 9/11 memorial gala, Brooklyn learns her father had been a member of an elite, anti-terrorism, military task force, made up of a very select group of people who had superhuman abilities. On the day the towers fell, he died using his power to save people.

The Army believes she inherited his gift, and Brooklyn is invited to train at West Point in order to hone her skills. Knowing deep down she is different than anyone else her age and wanting to learn more about a father she never knew, she readily agrees to become a cadet at the prestigious military academy.

She and five other 9/11 babies strengthen their superhuman abilities and spend weeks preparing themselves for their future in the army, fighting terrorists at home and abroad. And in the process of training, they identify with their deceased parents in a way they never knew they could.

Brooklyn knows she’ll go to war someday, but when terrorists find out about the group’s gifts, they don’t bother to wait.

They bring the war to West Point.

Now here's an excerpt for your reading pleasure.

I was still shaking when Liam crawled off of the ground and clung to me in an embrace. He was wheezing, but other than that, he seemed okay.

Different, but okay.

And I felt different, too. Altered, somehow. Like I was an actor cast in a part I never wanted to play.

I studied him, exploring those eyes that had grabbed hold of me from day one and refused to let go.

And I saw something new.

I saw hate.

His jaw clenched. He left my side and walked purposefully toward the body of the man trapped under the bench. He grabbed the knife that was resting on the ground next to the body and without hesitating, he strode toward the man who had choked him and had threatened to hurt me.

“Stop, Liam,” I commanded.

He wasn’t listening.

“STOP!”

I ran to him now. He was still intent on reaching the monster.

Finally, I caught his elbow.

“You’re a healer, Liam. Not a killer.”

That role had been filled by me.

“You are a healer,” I repeated, making him look me in the eye.

And just like that, Liam stopped. His look softened, as if he was seeing what he was doing for the first time.

“Christ,” he mumbled, first dropping the knife, then dropping to his knees.

And instead of trying to reach the body of either man, he reached for me, instead.

We stayed like that for a moment, lost in a place we’d never visited before: one where we’d done the worst kind of things.

Jacob shuffled out from the shadows and walked briskly to the first man I’d attacked, who was trapped under the bench.

I’d almost forgotten he was there.

Jacob kneeled, pressing his neck for a pulse. “He’s gone,” he declared.

I didn’t know if I was relieved or upset.

“I- I’ll go find someone to come help,” Jacob offered. He seemed thankful when I nodded my assent.

“I’m sorry,” Liam said as Jacob left. He’d turned his back to me, and his voice was a quieted whisper. His shoulders fell forward as he spoke. “I’m sorry I was going to – to do that to him– in front of you. What I was feeling – what I was thinking when he threatened to hurt you – I-I’d never felt or thought those things before. When he said that about how he was going to show you how pretty you were…” He spun toward me, his face masked in pain.

“That image was worse than anything I could ever imagine."

"I don’t know what’s happening to either one of us – who we’re turning into,” Liam continued. His eyes looked more silver than green, as if he’d been shocked into becoming someone – or something – else. “But I do know that I don’t want to ever see you in danger again.”

I closed my eyes for a moment and considered how nice that sounded – a danger-free life.

He grabbed my hand. “But Brooklyn, if we have to be in danger, if we are going to be part of this world, then I need you by my side.”

In that moment, I wanted more than anything to kiss him, to reassure him I felt the same way.

But I never got the chance.

Jacob returned. And just as he entered the room – before he could warn Liam, and before I could even utter a word, a knife flew into Liam’s back.

“Sorry I break up this… this romance,” the man whom I’d thrown into the wall snarled, tearing the knife out of Liam’s flesh, catching his body and holding it hostage. “But I’ve got job to finish.”

Now join me in welcoming several of the authors to Thoughts in Progress today. Given the times we are living in, I’ve asked a few related questions. Has your writing been affected by Covid-19? If so, in what ways and if not, how are things the same? Do you think it will have any influence on your next book? Any suggestions for others trying to write during this difficult time?

Welcome, Tyler.

Ugh, Covid.

I love to write. But to pay the bills, I'm a high school math teacher (yes, I really teach math) Covid devastated my writing time down to almost nothing because I had to do so much extra planning to put all my lessons and tests online and make everything virtual-friendly. I was just glad we were able to finish the year--we did what we could to make our seniors' last months fun, if not unique and definitely memorable.

Over the summer I was able to write--thank goodness for the IWSG contest! And yes, the state of the world influenced my story--living in such turmoil, I thought this would be the perfect time for an alien invasion! I also finished the rough draft of my 4th Pop Travel sci-fi detective thriller. But all book events were cancelled, so sales went to zero. I have been so thankful to be teaching in-person since day one this year, putting up with the masks and still doing a ton of extra work for those who've had to quarantine (had to do that twice myself!) It's totally been worth it! But it's taken a major toll on my writing. Sometimes I want to throw in the towel.

And that's my advice - DON'T GIVE UP! Don't give up on writing for anything. Even if you can only write a little each day or only on weekends (like me) It's a part of us. Sharing stories is essential!

Keep writing.

Welcome, C.D.

My writing has been affected primarily by the total destruction of my schedule. I've been working from home in my day job for the last year, and you would think that losing that hour-long commute every day would give me extra time. But guess what? That commute WAS my writing time. That was an hour each day I could stick in my headphones, open my laptop, put my head down and write. (I was on a bus, obviously, not driving. I'm not that bad). I haven't been able to use my extra time at home as constructively as I would like, because my kids are doing virtual school from home. They're in kindergarten and grade 3, so they need a lot of assistance, and the work from my day job gets pushed late in the evenings, leaving me with less free time (and writing time) than I had before.

The good news is that the pandemic doesn't affect the actual content of my writing much. My current series is a teen adventure/horror set in 1990s Canada (picture Degrassi High meets Stranger Things), so I don't feel that I have to include any of our modern day political, social or health complications. I know many writers, who are trying to keep their stories "modern" and "current," feel obligated to include references to the current world situation. I'm glad I don't have to deal with that, because it's very hard to incorporate such events honestly and fairly while you're in the middle of it. If you don't include mention of people wearing masks and keeping social distancing, it may seem jarring to many people who have lived that reality non-stop for the last 12+ months. If you include it at all, your story will seem dated and jarring in a couple of years once we've (hopefully) moved past this. None of that even touches the potential can of worms you could be opening in the ongoing masking and vaccination debates. To be safe I'm just going to keep writing about events and periods that are at least 30 years old.

If I had to give any advice to other authors trying to write and publish right now, it would be to go easy on yourself. Things will change rapidly day-to-day, and deadlines and word counts are going to come and go. There are millions of things that will weigh on you right now, probably far more than usual, so of course your productivity is going to suffer. There will be days when you won't have the energy or the mental state to do good work. That's okay. Don't blame yourself for it. Write whatever you can, when you can, even if it's just a few words here and there. Read, watch TV, exercise, do whatever you can to keep yourself sane and alive so when life starts turning around you will be here and ready to get back to doing good work and writing all the words.

C.D. Gallant-King is a Canadian writer currently residing in Ottawa, Ontario. Check him out on Twitter (https://twitter.com/CDGallantKing), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/cdgallantking) or his blog (http://www.cdgallantking.ca/)

Welcome, Charles.

Covid-19 has given me the impetus to put my hand to something I had always dreamed of: science fiction and epic fantasy. My previous books were contemporary thrillers (Mind Virus and The Devil’s Son) and historical fantasy (Simon Grey), both of which required extensive (and expensive!) research on location. Now, any further work in any genre that requires real-world research has been put on hold, so I’ve been focusing on work set in worlds that exist only in my imagination. The planet Ogygia in “Resident Alien” is one, and the other is a high-fantasy setting called The Hundred Realms, which I hope you’ll be seeing more of soon!

When the situation allows me to resume writing contemporary thrillers, I see myself making a passing mention of Covid-19, but not really letting it shape the story. It’s had enough influence on our real-life stories, and the only means of escape into a pandemic-free world we’ve had has been fiction.

To others who’ve been trying to write during this time, I’d say: Let the Muses guide you. It could be that this a fallow year for you, a time to rest and replenish before you’re expected to be back to full productivity. It could be that you, like me, are using this opportunity to focus on a new genre. But whatever form it takes, keep plying your craft! One thing this year has shown us clearly is that the world needs its artists and storytellers more than it knew.

These days, I’ve often recalled an old story about three little mice. One of them spends the autumn building a shelter, one spends it gathering food, and the third fritters away its time playing music and making up stories. When winter comes, you can probably guess what happens…

They all survive. Thanks to the first, they don’t freeze. Thanks to the second, they don’t starve. And thanks to the third, they don’t die of boredom.
