Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog, Says Be a Buddy Not a Bully by Charmaine Hammond

In this day and time when we hear so much about youngsters being bullied, finding a way to talk to your children about it is essential.

Toby, the Pet Therapy Dog coverAuthor Charmaine Hammond tackles that subject in her children’s book – TOBY, THE PET THERAPY DOG, SAYS BE A BUDDY NOT A BULLY.

In this charming story Hammond, using the pet therapy dog Toby, teaches youngsters respect, kindness and the importance of being considerate of others. She uses Toby as an example as to what youngsters should do if they are bullied or see someone else being bullied.

The story is beautifully illustrated by Rose Anne Prevec. The artist captures the emotions of the situation and depicts them in colorful drawings.

This delightful book will entertain youngsters, while educating them on ways to ‘be a buddy, not a bully’. The book will also help adults in starting a discussion on this topic with the youngsters in their home.

TOBY, THE PET THERAPY DOG also offers questions adults can discuss with their youngsters, rules for being a buddy, and tips on performing ‘acts of kindness’. This story is easy for youngsters to follow and would be a good addition to any library.

  1. Mason - Bullying is an important issue, nad children need to learn when they're young how to interact with each other so as to prevent bullying. So I'm glad that there are books out there that hep children sort through this issue. Thanks for sharing this one.

  4. Good topic to discuss with the children. As I look after my three grandchildren (under the age of three) we constantly have to address the issue, but mostly they are respective of each other.

    1. Ann, anyone who cares for youngster, especially that young, has their hands full. It sounds like you have good control and I'm sure the youngsters will learn a lot from you. I'd image that while they may fight among themselves, when it comes to someone else picking on one of them, they would all be there to help.

  5. This sounds like a great book for kids. Unfortunately so much bullying with adults, the children learn from them even when they have taught what is right. I will look for this one. I haven't seen any therapy dogs.

  6. Really enjoying this conversation. We love helping build character development and Toby has such a powerful way of demonstrating what unconditional, non judgmental acceptance is. When we present at schools with Toby 100% of the students join our kindness mission, doing one random act of kindness by end of day to make our world a better place. Amazing how a dog can inspire change and the energy of children in making the change is ever so powerful. :) charmaine, author
