Author Jodi Thomas: One True Heart

One True Heart by Jodi ThomasIt’s always a pleasure to have author Jodi Thomas visit Thoughts in Progress because that means we readers get another visit to the charming town of Harmony and get to see what its residents are up to.

Today Jodi joins us to talk about her new release, ONE TRUE HEART, which will hit bookstands April 7. You can pre-order the book on Jodi’s website.

Here’s a brief description of ONE TRUE HEART:

Millanie McAllen is always logical. But after returning to her childhood home, she learns that some things are beyond explanation—like her undeniable passion for Drew Cunningham…
After finding success as a singer on the road, Beau Yates returns to Harmony to make peace with his dying father—only to find the woman he’s been dreaming of for years. But the secrets they discover might be too much for him to bear…
When Johnny Wheeler is charged with his wife’s murder, he turns to the only person who believes he’s innocent. Fortune teller Kare Cunningham’s life has always danced around reality—but Johnny is able to ground her like no other…
As their paths cross in new, captivating directions, the townspeople of Harmony need to learn to love and let go in order to live together in their little slice of heaven.

Please join me in giving a warm welcome to Jodi. Welcome, Jodi.

ONE TRUE HEART is a book I’ve been waiting to write for several years. Sometimes characters sat around the kitchen in my mind waiting for their story to be pulled off the back burner and come to life. For those of you who have followed me through Harmony you’re going to see one of my favorite couples Beau and Trouble. And of those who are new, you’ll meet new characters that I think you’ll fall in love with.

I think I’ve wanted to write this story since I wrote TWISTED CREEK. After all, someone had to move into Luke’s cabin after he moved out and what better than a broken hero.

Millanie McAllen is falling apart. She’s wounded and lost. Drew is an expert at blending in. They have nothing in common except an attraction neither believes they are ready to deal with. When Millie takes an undercover assignment, she needs Drew’s help but his hesitation to talk about himself leaves her wondering how much she can trust him.

Flowing through the stories like soft music is Beau and Trouble’s love story. He’s become a star, worth millions in the music industry, but he never forgets his roots in Harmony. When he returns for his father’s death, he has to find the one girl who believed in him from the beginning. She was his midnight love who picked him up at the back of the bar after he’d played all evening for a hundred dollars. They’d race the moon in her sports car, but he never knew her last name. When he finds her, Beau knows that to win her back he’ll have to go back to being that young kid who loved music so much he’d play for free.

I love it when new readers find me for the first time. It’s like I’m brand new, and they just discovered a Jodi Thomas book. Then after they read one, they check my website or Amazon and discover they have many more to read. I get a real shot of sunshine when they write or call. It is kind of like the feeling you get when an old friend from the past calls. For a moment, you’re sixteen again and giggling.

So, whether you’re a first time reader of a Jodi Thomas book or you’ve been with me through them all, I want you to know that you are the reason I write.

With love, Jodi Thomas

Jodi, thanks so much for visiting with us today and sharing this look at the new story. It’s always fun to find a series where you can revisit with old friends and find new ones.

For those who aren’t familiar with Jodi, here’s a bit of background on her.

A fifth generation Texan who taught family living, Jodi Thomas chooses to set the majority of her novels in her home state, where her grandmother was born in a covered wagon. A former teacher, Jodi traces the beginning of her storytelling career to the days when her twin sisters were young and impressionable.

The stories Jodi has committed to paper have earned her an impressive list of distinguished awards:

· Her first book, Beneath the Texas Sky (1988), won the National Press Women’s Novel of the Year in its category.
· Book two, Northern Star (1990), was named best novel by the (Texas) Panhandle Professional Writers and the Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc., an organization of writers’ groups from several states.
· Book three, The Tender Texan (1991), was Thomas’s first national bestseller and won her the first Romance Writers of America’s RITA, the $1.5 billion romance publishing industry’s equivalent of an "Oscar."
· In 1995, To Tame A Texan’s Heart (1994) received the second RITA for Jodi.
· Book twelve, To Kiss a Texan (1999), was her first novel to score on the USA TODAY Best-selling Books list.
· For The Texan’s Wager (2002), sixteen was the magic number. As Thomas’s sixteenth novel, the book scored number sixteen on the NEW YORK TIMES extended bestseller list.
· Her second contemporary, Finding Mary Blaine (2004), won the National Readers’ Choice Award.
· In July 2006, Jodi was the 11th woman to be inducted into the RWA Hall of Fame for winning her third RITA in the category of short historical romance for The Texan’s Reward (2005).
· In 2009, Jodi received the National Readers’ Choice Award for two of her books: Twisted Creek (2008) and Tall, Dark and Texan (2008).
· In 2010, The Lone Texan won the Reader’s Choice 2009 Best Western Romance from Love Western Romances.com.
· In 2011, Jodi won a RITA for Welcome to Harmony (2010) and the Booksellers’ Best Award for Somewhere Along the Way (2010), Romantic Times’ Romance Pioneer Award, Reviewers’ Choice Award and Best Western Romance for Texas Blue (2011)
· In 2013, Jodi won a Holt Medallion for Wild Texas Rose (2012) and the West Texas Books Festival’s A.C. Green Award
· In 2014, Jodi Thomas won the National Readers’ Choice Award’s Contemporary Single Title for Can’t Stop Believing (2013)

With a degree in Family Studies, Jodi is a marriage and family counselor by education, a background that enables her to write about family dynamics. Honored in 2002 as a Distinguished Alumni by Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Jodi enjoys interacting with students on the West Texas A & M University campus, where she currently serves as Writer In Residence.

Commenting on her contribution to the arts, Jodi said, "When I was teaching classes full time, I thought I was making the world a better place. Now I think of a teacher, or nurse, or mother settling back and relaxing with one of my books. I want to take her away on an adventure that will entertain her. Maybe, in a small way, I’m still making the world a better place."

For more on Jodi and her writing, visit her website and connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

Now for my thoughts on this fun new installment….

ONE TRUE HEART is a charming romance that will have you believing love will find a way.

Author Jodi Thomas does a wonderful job bringing the small town setting to life. Through her vivid descriptions, Thomas pulls the reader into the comfortable atmosphere where friends and family pull together.

The story follows three couples as they find their way to one another. The twists and turns, along with the highs and lows of relationships, makes the storylines plausible and realistic. The characters are likable and well-developed.

Even though ONE TRUE HEART is the eighth installment in the Harmony series, new readers can jump right in without feeling they’re missing pieces of the story. However, they may find themselves wanting to read prior stories to learn more about some of the secondary characters.

This is a delightful, entertaining story that is a must read for the romantic in you.

The Denim Blue Sea by Joanne DeMaio

The Denim Blue Sea by Joanne DeMaioI’m delighted today to be participating in author Joanne DeMaio virtual book tour for her latest release, THE DENIM BLUE SEA.

Joanne, a fellow coffee lover, always brings such interesting characters to life in her stories. You can check out a brief synopsis of her latest book on Goodreads and I’m here to share my thoughts on it today.

+++

Author Joanne DeMaio has a unique writing style that flows rhythmically drawing the reader deeper into the story with the turn of each page. Her latest release, THE DENIM BLUE SEA, is a perfect example of her writing method.

Friends gather at seaside Stony Point of Long Island South for the wedding of denim designer Maris Carrington and architect Jason Barlow. As with most weddings, all does not go smoothly. Maris and Jason are faced with tough choices as they draw closer to their wedding day. Several members of the wedding party are also confronted with their own problems prior to the wedding.

The family and friends come together to help the couple realize their dream. The ups and downs along the way to the alter makes for an even sweeter ending. A long-lost journal enhances the story through adding character depth and insight.

The author’s vivid descriptions and eye for detail places the reader in the middle of the activities. Readers can almost feel the sand under their feet as the story unfolds. An intriguing romance blended with bits of humor, suspense, and inspiration makes this a well-balanced story.

The characters are well-developed, likable and realistic. The mix of different careers and personalities makes for an engaging group that readers can relate to.

THE DENIM BLUE SEA is a feel-good story that will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions. The ride will entertain, inspire and cause you to smile a time or two as you quickly turn the pages to discover what happens.

The Three Little Horses and the Big Bully Donkey-1Here’s a brief description of Liane-Melissa’s first book, The Three Little Horses and the Big Bully Donkey:

A tale (based on the “Three Little Pigs”) about three little horse brothers who suddenly lose their house that is destroyed by a fire. The young horses are totally alone and thrust into the reality of having to depend on themselves and each other against a bully donkey, who wanders the forest wrecking homes and bullying the other animals.

This warm-hearted tale promotes strong values and has a fun premise. Written and humorously illustrated in vivid color throughout by Liana-Melissa Allen, the story is a proven winner for reading aloud to children.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Liana-Melissa Allen is a young author and illustrator of children's books and books for youth. She has written, illustrated and published six books. Her most recent one is the colorfully illustrated children's book "Donkey's Kite", the second book of "A Horse Valley Adventure" series. The first was "The Three Little Horses and the Big Bully Donkey". The lovable cartoon characters, Max, Lax, Jack and Donkey makes them a favorite of first and second grade students. She is now working on her third book of "A Horse Valley Adventure".

The magical world of fantasy has inspired Liana's imagination since as long as she can remember. Part of this was fueled by her dad reading aloud to her every day when she was younger. As a result, reading is her primary passion along with music. These two passions feed her imagination into stories and drawings, which she joyously sketches out into storyboards for a potential book.

Liana-Melissa is also a dedicated classical/jazz pianist, and mostly enjoys older music, especially from the big band era and the 1940's, 50's and 60's. While playing the piano, her imagination often leads to a great amount of improvising. Frequently, Liana will improvise a theme for one of the stories she is writing. Capturing this improvised music became a priority, which ultimately resulted in theme music for "A Horse Valley Adventure". The "Horse Valley" theme will be used for a short animated video featuring her Horse Valley characters.

Liana-Melissa loves to hear from her young readers. Please visit her website at

Writing a Novel in 15 Minute Increments {+Giveaway}

The Bookseller by Cynthia SwansonI’m delighted to have author Cynthia Swanson joining us today to talk about writing her debut novel, THE BOOKSELLER, in 15-minute increments.

Thanks to Cynthia and the lovely Meg at Tandem Literary, I have a print copy of THE BOOKSELLER to give away. Please see the end of the post for more details.

An IndieNext Pick for March, THE BOOKSELLER ponders the tantalizing question, "what if." The story follows a woman in early-1960's Denver who must reconcile her reality with the alternate world of her dreams.

Kitty Miller, a single woman in her late 30s, owns a bookshop with her best friend Frieda. Kitty begins to have nightly dreams of an alternative reality in which she's a married woman with children (and no more bookstore). Reminiscent of Sliding Doors (the 1998 movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow), The story explores the butterfly effect - how one small change of circumstance can set off a cascade of entirely different events. It's a fast, engaging read that is great for discussion and introspection.

For those who enjoy mid-century design, you'll love the 1960s clothes, music, architecture, and books that make up the backdrop of the story.

Now, please join me in giving Cynthia a warm welcome to Thoughts. Cynthia, welcome and please tell us how you can really write a novel in 15-minute increments.

It’s the classic paradox: the more time we have, the less likely we are to use it wisely.

When I wrote first draft of my novel The Bookseller, time was in very short supply. I had a freelance technical/marketing editing career and a house that was under construction. My twins were in kindergarten. My youngest child, at three, was up and at ‘em every morning before the birds started singing - precluding the possibility of rising early, making myself coffee, and serenely writing fiction while my kids slept. I know a lot of authors work that way, but it wasn’t an option for me.

So when did I write? Well. Writing had to happen in very small increments, whenever I could squeeze it in during the day. Sometimes that meant I got in only fifteen minutes of writing time per day.

“That seems impossible,” people have said to me. “It takes me fifteen minutes just to settle into my work day. I’d never get anything done if I only had fifteen minutes.”

Ah. Yes. But that’s because their work days are eight hours long. Fifteen minutes is a small percentage of an eight-hour work day.

Fifteen minutes, however, was often 100% of my fiction-writing day.

So how did I do it? To begin with, I’m blessed with the ability to write very fast - when I set my mind to it. If I’m really cranking, if I’m focused, I can write 1,000 words - that’s about four double-spaced pages – in an hour.

The first draft of The Bookseller was 50,000 words. (The final copy was double that.) Those first 50,000 words - when I do the math, it took me around 50 hours to write them.

That’s not much more than a typical employee’s full-time work week.

“Sure,” one might say. “But how good could those words be, really?”

The answer is: not very. But that’s beside the point. I aspired to write 250 words in 15 minutes - 1,000 in an hour - and that meant one thing was key: no stopping. No going back and re-reading. No taking out my thesaurus to search for the perfect word. No getting online and doing research. All that came later, in successive drafts.

With time being so restricted, for that first draft I just got the basics down and kept going.

When I got stuck, I’d make a note of the problem and move on. Sometimes I discontinued entire sections, or I’d have to expedite my way out of a sub-plot, because I had no idea how to resolve something. I didn’t allow myself to get hung up on that; I made a note, let it go, and forged ahead.

In subsequent versions, once that first draft was complete, these issues generally resolved themselves. Either that, or I found their part of the storyline wasn’t necessary in the first place, and I removed it completely.

Writing this way takes discipline and focus. Neither are my strong suits, but I find that when I’m in the groove, nothing makes me happier than my fingers flying on the keyboard, transmitting what’s in my head onto the printed page.

That kept me going. Often for only fifteen minutes at a time - but nonetheless moving in the right direction.

Cynthia, thanks so much for visiting with us and sharing this look at your writing. Your 15-minute working periods just goes to prove, if you want to write you will find the time.

Here’s a bit of background on Cynthia (in her own words) for those who aren’t familiar with her.

My name is Cynthia Swanson...and I'm a writer and designer.

I started out in college (a long time ago) majoring in Architecture, because I have always loved design, and I thought I needed to pursue a "practical" career. But after 2 years, I went back to my first love - writing - and changed my major to English. I was a freelance technical/marketing writer for many years.

All the while, I aspired to a creative writing career. Now that I have a debut novel coming out, I concentrate on writing fiction and personal essay.

Still, the design world continues to draw me in. I especially love mid-century design, and I'm constantly thinking of ways to enhance and improve our mid-century home. I'm also thrilled to discuss home design projects with others.

Praise for THE BOOKSELLER:

"This is a stunner of a debut novel, astonishingly tight and fast paced. The 1960s tone is elegant and even, and Kitty/Katharyn's journey is intriguing...This will especially resonate with fans of the movie Sliding Doors and the authors Anna Quindlen and Anita Shreve." (Library Journal, starred review)
"Dexterously traversing past and present, fact and fiction, Swanson's clever first novel ingeniously explores the inventive ways the human spirit copes with trauma." (Booklist)
"What if? These words tantalize and haunt us. In The Bookseller, writing with a sharp-tinged empathic pen, Cynthia Swanson takes us on a startling journey where a woman is thrust into the alternative world that might have been, had she made different choices." (Randy Susan Meyers, author of Accidents of Marriage)
"Cynthia Swanson's The Bookseller is both a delightful and haunting exploration of identity, love and loss. With great style and compassion, the author asks the age-old question: 'What if my life were different?' The answers in this affecting debut novel are truly surprising." (Joanna Hershon, author of A Dual Inheritance)
"I inhaled The Bookseller. I loved both of Kitty's worlds, and refused to put the book down until I saw how the tension between the two worlds resolved. A deeply satisfying read." (Ann Napolitano, author of A Good Hard Look)

Obsession in Death by J.D. Robb

Obsession in Death by J.D. Robb - Thoughts in ProgressWhen a series reaches its 40th installment, you have to wonder if the spark is still going to be there.

Author J.D. Robb demonstrates that the 40th book can still keep you on the edge of your seat while it keeps you guessing about the villain. OBSESSION IN DEATH is Robb’s latest (and 40th) installment in her In Death series featuring Lt. Eve Dallas.

Narrator Susan Ericksen continues to do a superb job bringing the various characters to life. Her inflection and pace gives each character their own unique voice. Her mannerisms heightens the emotions of the story adding depth to an already suspenseful thriller.

When Lt. Eve Dallas of the NYPSD finds out she has an obsessed fan who is willing to kill for her, she is determined to put a stop to it. With each killing, the murderer leaves Eve a message from her ‘true and loyal friend’ stating they are helping Eve fight justice when the system lets her down.

Eve has to play a delicate and psychological dance with the killer because she knows in the end, the killer will turn on her as she’s not grateful for her ‘true and loyal friend’s’ gifts.

Robb once again blends the hard-boiled cop of the lieutenant with the slowly softening side of Eve. Combining with the usual mix of characters, Robb adds humor, friendship and romance for a well-balanced story.

OBSESSION IN DEATH is suspenseful and moves at a steady pace keeping your attention focused on trying to figure out the killer. With twists and turns, the ending comes with a surprising conclusion. This long-running series continues to surprise and entertain.

Obsession in Death by J.D. Robb, In Death Book #40, Narrated by Susan Ericksen, Brilliance Audio, @2015, ISBN: 978-1480593053, Unabridged, 11 Discs, Run Time: 13 Hours and 27 Minutes

Horse of a Different Killer {+Giveaway}

Horse of a Different Killer by Laura MorriganIt’s a pleasure to welcome author Laura Morrigan to Thoughts in Progress today to talk about her new release, HORSE OF A DIFFERENT KILLER, and cute animals.

Laura’s latest release is the third installment in her Call of the Wilde Mystery series. With a protagonist that is an animal behaviorist, Laura joins us today to talk about cute animals. In addition, thanks to Laura and the delightful Danielle at Penguin Group, I have a print copy of HORSE OF A DIFFERENT KILLER to giveaway. Please see the end of the post for more details.

Please join me in giving Laura a warm welcome to Thoughts as she tells us about five adorable animals.

guest post

Laura, thanks for visiting with us today and sharing this look at those cute animals. I’ve not heard of these before so it fun learning about them.

Now for those who aren’t familiar with Laura, here’s a brief background on her.

Spending the first years of her life on a Costa Rican coffee farm blessed Laura Morrigan with a fertile imagination and a love for all things wild.

Later she became a volunteer at a local zoo, helping out with everything from “waste management” to teaching an elephant how to paint. Drawing from her years of experience with both wild and domestic animals and her passion for detective novels, Laura created the Call of the Wilde series.

She lives in Florida with her husband and far too many cats, loves the Blue Angels, wearing flip flops in November, and thunderstorms. For more on Laura and her writing, visit her website and connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Here’s a description of HORSE OF A DIFFERENT KILLER:

Animal behaviorist Grace Wilde’s psychic ability gives her insight into the minds of all kinds of creatures. If only humans were as easy to read…
Dead men may tell no tales, but they can screw up your life with a few phone calls. Grace’s abusive ex-brother-in-law, Anthony Ortega, needs her help—at least that’s what he said on the messages he left before his sudden death. Grace is inclined to let the matter rest in peace, but when her sister is named a suspect, Grace decides to get to the bottom of the cryptic calls.
Her only lead is Ortega’s fiancée, who believes that he had arranged to surprise her with the purchase of a Frisian gelding named Heart. The horse was being stabled at the R-n-R Ranch—but was taken in the middle of the night. Now, with her sister in trouble and a missing horse on her hands, Grace hopes the information harnessed from her psychic skills will be enough to rein in the killer…

Now for my thoughts on this fun new cozy….

Stories involving animals quickly draw me in and author Laura Morrigan’s HORSE OF A DIFFERENT KILLER is a good example of just such a tale.

Morrigan’s protagonist, Grace Wilde, has a deep connection with animals. The author conveys that respect and love Grace feels through her writing so the reader also feels it. While you don’t have to be an animal lover to enjoy this book (and series), those who appreciate animals will feel the connection.

The characters are charming and likable. The secondary characters enhance the story and form an interesting group of friends for Grace.

Moving at a good pace, HORSE OF A DIFFERENT KILLER is an intriguing mystery that will hold you spellbound as you follow this unwavering amateur sleuth on her journey to find a killer.

Author Leslie Budewitz: The Nose Knows {+ Giveaway}

Assault and Pepper by Leslie BudewitzMy delighted today to welcome author Leslie Budewitz to Thoughts in Progress to talk about ASSAULT AND PEPPER, first installment in her new Seattle Spice Shop Mysteries series from Berkley Prime Crime.

Leslie is joining us today to talk about an experience we’ve all had at one time or another. In addition, thanks to Leslie and the lovely Danielle at Penguin Group, I have a print copy of ASSAULT AND PEPPER to giveaway after I share my thoughts on this fun new release. Please see the end of the post for more giveaway details.

Now, please join me in giving Leslie a warm welcome to Thoughts. Welcome, Leslie. Tell us what the nose knows.

You’re sitting in a classroom—or a conference room, or a darkened theater—and all of a sudden, you find yourself thinking about your college boyfriend. You think Good heavens, I haven’t thought of him in years, but you look around anyway, more than half expecting to see him. The new arrival notices your puzzlement and you mention that you thought you smelled a familiar cologne. “Oh, Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene,” he says. “I’ve worn it for years.” And you think, that’s it—that was his cologne, too.

It’s an experience we’ve all had. As Pepper Reece, the protagonist of ASSAULT AND PEPPER puts it,

“My staff turned thoughtful, summoning their own ideas of fall. They say the sense of smell is the most intimately linked of all our senses to memory, and I believe it. One whiff of a familiar scent, even one we haven’t encountered in years, can transport us to a time and place long forgotten, even before we consciously recall the memory.”

The smell triggers the feeling of being back in the past—in that place, with that companion. It’s called olfactory memory, and it’s very real. Scientists believe that the olfactory nerve—the one responsible for our sense of smell—was one of the first cranial nerves to develop, perhaps because the sense of smell is critical to personal safety, especially in those early days of homo sapiens. I suspect that primacy may explain why we often make the jump—we look around for the old boyfriend—before consciously noticing the triggering scent.

Smell, of course, is an essential part of cooking and eating. It’s a safeguard—we smell the rotten meat or deadly berry, or the moldy cottage cheese, and know it’s dangerous. It’s a clue that the food is ready to eat—a ripe cantaloupe has a distinctive aroma, as does the perfectly grilled steak. And we all know the acrid odor of a pot left on the stove too long!

Smell is inviting. Real estate agents often tell their clients to bake cookies or light a scented candle before a showing, to evoke the sense of home.

Would we enjoy eating so much if not for the aromas? The senses of taste and smell are closely linked. There is probably not a functional nose on the planet that doesn’t perk up at the smell of bread baking. The mouth waters and the tummy starts to rumble as the digestive juices get ready to go to work. Many a spouse has been drawn out of bed by the aroma of coffee brewing, those tiny molecules more powerful than the thought of more sleep. And I don’t know about you, but one whiff of a brownie and I’m starving, even if I’d just sworn I wasn’t hungry.

People who lose their sense of smell often lose interest in food. Conversely, an old adage says “Beware of the old cook”—a worn or overused sense of smell can lead to a heavy hand with spices.

And for readers like us, the aroma of a favorite tea—the smoky-bergamot of Earl Gray or the citrus and cinnamon of Pepper’s Seattle Spice Shop tea—sets the mood for a good long read.

Have you had the experience of being transported by an aroma? Do tell!

Leslie, thanks so much for joining us today. The sense of smell does play such a large part in our daily lives even though we sometimes take it for granted.

Here’s a brief description of ASSAULT AND PEPPER from the cover:

Pepper Reece, owner of the Seattle Spice Shop, thinks she can handle any kind of salty customer—until a murderer ends up in the mix…
After leaving a dicey marriage and losing a beloved job in a corporate crash, Pepper Reece has found a new zest for life running a busy spice and tea shop in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Her aromatic creations are the talk of the town, and everyone stops by for a cup of her refreshing spice tea, even other shopkeepers and Market regulars.
But when a panhandler named Doc shows up dead on her doorstep, a Seattle Spice Shop cup in his hand, the local gossip gets too hot for Pepper to handle—especially after the police arrest Tory Finch, one of Pepper’s staffers, for murder.
Tory seems to know why she’s a suspect, but she refuses to do anything to curry favor with the cops. Convinced her reticent employee is innocent, Pepper takes it on herself to sniff out some clues. Only, if she’s not careful, Pepper’s nosy ways might make her next on the killer’s list…

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES!

Here’s also a bit of background on Leslie for those who aren’t familiar with her.

Leslie Budewitz is the author of the Spice Shop Mysteries and the Food Lovers Village Mysteries, both from Berkley Prime Crime. She is the only author to win Agatha Awards for both fiction and nonfiction—the 2013 Agatha Award for Best First Novel, for Death al Dente and the 2011 Agatha Award for Best Nonfiction, for Books, Crooks & Counselors: How to Write Accurately About Criminal Law & Courtroom Procedure (Quill Driver Books).

She lives in northwest Montana with her husband, a musician and doctor of natural medicine, and their cat Ruff, a cover model and avid bird-watcher.
For more on Leslie and her writing, visit her website and connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

Now for my thoughts on this entertaining new mystery….

If you enjoy being transported to a different area while you’re reading, then author Leslie Budewitz’s ASSAULT AND PEPPER is the perfect read. The author gives you an intriguing murder mystery to solve while also taking you on a trip to Seattle and the Pike Place Market.

Budewitz’s eye for detail and vivid descriptions places the reader in the middle of the area where you can practically smell the aromas and hear the activities bustling about. She keeps the story at a steady pace with twists and turns to hold you captivate until the end.

The protagonist, Pepper Reece, is a well-developed, likable character that has realistic traits readers can relate to. The protagonist is strong and determined with a soft side for her friends. The secondary characters are varied and engaging adding depth to the story.

Highlighted with facts and quotes at the beginning of each chapter, ASSAULT AND PEPPER is a delightful start to what promises to be a charming series readers will eagerly look forward to revisiting time and time again.
