Author Carol Kilgore: Solomon’s Compass Release Day

I’m especially delighted today to welcome author Carol Kilgore back to Thoughts in Progress. Today is extra special because it’s the release date for Carol’s second novel, Solomon’s Compass.

Some of you may know Carol from her intriguing blog, Under The Tiki Hut or from her first novel, In Name Only. Carol has a lot going on this month as she participates in the amazing A to Z Blogfest and is on tour for Solomon’s Compass.

First, let me give you a brief synopsis of Solomon’s Compass:

A missing belt—her uncle’s prized possession. The lure of buried treasure. And a sexy former SEAL who makes U.S. Coast Guard Commander Taylor Campbell crazy. What more could any woman want. Right?
Taylor is in Rock Harbor, Texas, on a quest to unearth her uncle’s treasure—a journey far outside the realm of her real life. There’s one glitch. Taylor's certain the buried treasure was all in Uncle Randy's dementia-riddled mind. Now he’s dead.
Former SEAL Jake Solomon is in Rock Harbor under false pretenses to protect Taylor from the fate that befell her uncle and the other members of a tight circle of Coast Guardsmen called the Compass Points who served together on Point boats in Vietnam.
Jake is definitely not supposed to become involved with Taylor. That was his first mistake. Taylor is attracted to Jake as well, but she refuses to wait for him to locate the killer when she knows her plan will force her uncle’s murderer into action.
But the killer's actions are just what Jake is afraid of.

Now Carol joins us to answer her own questions. You see, I asked Carol to answer 3 questions she’d like to answer that have never been asked of her before. Let’s see what she has to say:

Answers to Questions You Never Asked

I’m so happy to be blogging here today. Thank you for hosting me, Mason. I’m especially thrilled because today is the release day for my second novel, Solomon’s Compass, and it’s always best to share happy times with friends.

During the writing of my novels, I sometimes think things like I hope nobody asks where this came from or I wonder if anyone will ask how I know this or I’ll bet someone asks if anyone can really do that.

As it turns out, readers usually ask about everything EXCEPT the things I think they will!

So today I thought I write about three things I thought readers would ask but haven’t. To be fair, not many have read Solomon’s Compass, since it’s just releasing today (duh), but no one has asked in an interview.

About In Name Only
How did you come up with the hydrogen isolator?
I knew someone would call me out on this. Especially a reader who has even a passing acquaintance with physics. But nary a peep. I spent weeks pouring over articles in science journals and reading Physics for Dummies Airheads.

Finally I understood barely enough to cobble something together that halfway made sense to me. But obviously it wouldn’t work orcompassfinalnew web someone would have already done it. Now that I write this, I think I may have actually written about this in a blog post one time, but no one ever asked me about it. Or called me out.

About Solomon’s Compass
Who was the most fun to write – Taylor or Jake?

I’m certain no one will ever ask this question because the answer is completely obvious. The answer is Jake. His words rolled straight out of my brain and onto the screen with little or no thought or effort. I felt as if I’d known him for a long time. Truth: I fell a little in love with Jake. Sshhh…don’t tell anyone. Especially don’t tell Jake Smile

About Me
What do you hope readers take away from reading your books?

I believe one of the themes that turns up in all my books is that people and events are not always as they appear. So it’s good not to make instant judgments of people – for good or bad – because  of their circumstances or the way they look.

Another theme is love is important. Not just romantic love, but all kinds of love. If readers take away one or both of these and remember them for a while, I’m happy.

Carol, thanks for joining us today and CONGRATULATIONS on the release of Solomon’s Compass. I so agree with you about not making instant judgments about people. I know for most part, first impressions do say a lot, but there can be so many reasons to cause their actions that day.

Now for those who don’t know Carol that well, let me give you a little background. Carol is an award-winning author of several published short stories and many essays and articles. Solomon’s Compass is her second novel, a blend of mystery, suspense, and romance she calls Crime Fiction with a Kiss – always at least one crime; always a love story.

Carol and her Coast Guard husband live in San Antonio, Texas, with two herding dogs that like nothing better than pack time on the patio. For more on Carol and her writing, visit her website, check out her blog, find her on Facebook and Twitter, and look for her on Goodreads and Amazon.

Thanks everyone for dropping by today. Be sure to wish Carol ‘Happy Release Day.’ What is something you wish someone would ask you, but no one never has?

  5. Great interview and the never-asked questions were fun. I had to laugh about physics for dummies, I doubt if I could understand it even with that. Congratulations again, Carol!

  6. I'm not sure how well I truly understood it either - LOL. I took what I thought it meant and twisted it into something I could better understand and ran with that.

  8. This was a good idea, Carol. It's funny how people never seem to react to our books (or blog posts, for that matter) as we expect them to.
