Sunday Salon: The Midwife of Venice by Roberta Rich

TSSbadge3It’s time once again for Sunday Salon - a time to gather and discuss the assortment of books we’ve encountered during the past week.

With Mother’s Day next Sunday, I have a book I’d like to share that would make a great gift for the mother who likes to read. It’s one of those that tugs on your heartstrings.

THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE by Roberta Rich

157216870Throughout Venice, Hannah Levi is well-known for her abilities as a midwife. She has even designed secret ‘birthing spoons’ to aid in difficult deliveries.

When a wealthy count asks for Hannah’s help with his wife who has been in labor for days, Hannah is briefly torn. Her mission is to help, but a Papal forbids Jews from giving medical treatment to Christians. To add to the conflict, the payment the count is offering would ransom her husband, Isaac, who has been captured at sea.

Hannah’s decision begins a string of dilemmas as she tries to free her husband. There are twists and turns along the way to make you wonder will the couple ever be reunited.

The story flows smoothly transporting readers to the seedy streets of Venice in 1575 and beyond. The heroine encounters one hurdle after another, but refuses to give up. The characters and the setting will hold you spellbound.

THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE is author Roberta Rich’s U.S. debut, but hopefully won’t be her last. The author’s website is www.robertarich.com
