Sunday Salon: Words Spoken True by Ann H. Gabhart

Coffee_and_newspaperSunday Salon is a time to relax, sip on your favorite beverage, and get comfortable with something good to read. Today I’m sharing a book that could be considered two reads in one as it’s a book about newspapers.

WORDS SPOKEN TRUE by Ann H. Gabhart

While I didn’t grow up in the newspaper business, I did venture into right out of high school and spent the next 35 years there. I think that’s one reason I was immediately drawn to author Ann H. Gabhart’s current release, WORDS SPOKEN TRUE

9780800720452This is the story of Adriane Darcy who grew up in her father’s newspaper business. She had ink in her veins and wanted to write about news that mattered. It was 1855 in Louisville, KY, making it a bit ore challenging for Adriane than it is now.

A killer is lose in the city slashing up young women by the river and Adriane is determined to get the scoop sometimes without thought to her own safety.

Her father’s paper, the Tribune, is the leading paper in Louisville. However, a hotshot young editor, Blake Garrett, takes over a competing newspaper and begins a controversial new style of reporting. The battle for readership between the 2 papers intensifies. It doesn’t help matters that Adriane and Blake are drawn to each other despite being enemies.

To add to her problems, Adriane’s father has given his permission for her to marry Stan Jimson, the son of a powerful local businessman. She doesn’t love Stan, but his father holds the keys to the Tribune’s future. She feels loyalty to her father and the newspaper despite the loss of her own happiness.

Gabhart weaves an intricate tale of mystery, love, and loyalty amidst a backdrop of historical facts. She vividly portrays the emotions one feels when pursuing a story. She captures the drive that pushes reporters to find the truth. In addition, Gabhart shows the power newspapers once held while including bits of Louisville’s volatile political and civil unrest in the 1850s.

Adriane is a strong-willed, independent protagonist readers will fall in love with. WORDS SPOKEN TRUE is a refreshing, delightful and inspiring read.

  1. Thank you for your lovely review of Ann's wonderful book! Ann's characterizations and story line details are fabulous. I am an ole newspaper gal myself. I sold advertising and wrote a cooking column. I enjoy promotion and marketing. I also worked at our local radio station, and I loved writing ad copy! We have a great regional newspaper here from the "big city" in my home area. I have it right here beside me, and I am about to devour it along with some fresh coffee and biscuits and gravy!

As always, I so enjoy visiting your blog and reading your posts. You are one of my "go to" reviewers. You always shine a light on such interesting books and talented authors. Thank you : )

The cover of "Words Spoken True" is very beautiful with its many shades of brown. It brings to mind the sepia tint of old photos.

  4. The cover is really appealling and Words Spoken True is certainly the kind of book I enjoy, thanks Mason.

This week I read a first cozy mystery by a man who usually works for newspapers, magazines and promotion. Larry D.Marshall wrote: Her Book of Shadows. Loved it.
Scott Riker, american sleuth living and working in Quebec with wife and daughter has to find a missing teenage girl and then, to protect her.
Very well written, good pace, wit, humor, honesty and caring.

  5. Mason - What an interesting-sounding book! I really like historical novels, and this one sounds lit it's got solid suspense in there as well. And I love that perspective on the news business.

  6. It does sound like a great read. I worked as a proofreader at one of our newspapers when I was much younger. :)

I love reading a story where the MC is a reporter or writer.
