A Giveaway of LOVE AND CAPITAL by Mary Gabriel

9780316066112_388X586"A rich, humanizing portrait of the Marx family... A saga as richly realized as a fine Victorian novel." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review

That’s just one of many reviews about author Mary Gabriel’s most fascinating new book, LOVE AND CAPITAL: KARL AND JENNY MARX AND THE BIRTH OF A REVOLUTION.

Thanks to Anna and the great folks at Little, Brown and Company, I have 3 copies of this intriguing new book to giveaway. Please see the end of the post for the giveaway guidelines. Now for a bit about the book.

The beginning of the book paints a bleak picture of weary poverty on the London streets, then juxtaposed with brilliant minds hard at work with their respective masterpieces: Dickens creating David Copperfield, Charles Darwin studying barnacles, and Karl Marx plotting the overthrow of kings and capitalists because he could see the poverty almost as clearly as the poor souls on the streets.

Brilliantly researched and wonderfully written, LOVE AND CAPITAL is a heartbreaking and dramatic saga of the family side of the man whose works would redefine the world after his death.

Drawing upon years of research, acclaimed biographer Mary Gabriel brings to light the story of Karl and Jenny Marx's marriage. We follow them as they roam Europe, on the run from governments amidst an age of revolution and a secret network of would-be revolutionaries, and see Karl not only as an intellectual, but as a protective father and loving husband, a revolutionary, a jokester, a man of tremendous passions, both political and personal.

In LOVE AND CAPITAL, Mary Gabriel has given us a vivid, resplendent, and truly human portrait of the Marxes-their desires, heartbreak and devotion to each other's ideals.

  1. It sounds very interesting. I think it could have been just a history book but managed to take it to a whole new level.

  2. I'm always interested to know more about people living before us, especially if their life and ideas changed the world.
Thanks Mason, it is the first time I hear about this book that seems very interesting.

  3. Mason - Oh, this sounds like such an interesting perspective on the way that the needs of working people seemed to get attention from all sorts of different quarters at roughly the same time. Thanks for sharing this with us.
