Around The World

Have you ever thought about where your words go?

I know it sounds like an odd question, but just how far do our words travel once they are placed in blogdom?

If you're an author, thinking about your words going around the world may not be any thing new. But for the non-writer, it can be mind boggling.

If you are of the a certain generation (over 40), there was a time when the concept of sharing thoughts with others around the world in a matter of minutes would have been laughable.

I am fascinated by the fact that what I'm writing now can be read by people all over the US and in other countries within a matter of minutes after I post it. Knowing that I can correspond with other bloggers in so many different states and countries is awesome. Once upon a time corresponding with someone in another part of the US would have taken weeks, while other countries would have been months.

We have definitely come a long way. What about the generation coming along now? What will their communication be like in 30, 40 years? What do you see for the future of communication? What would you like to see?

  1. Hi Mason .. they certainly go around the world in less than 80 days! The interesting thing I find is the different 'takes' we have on words .. and what people in other countries haven't seemed to pick up on .. or don't take time to think about ...

I hope the next few generations will be able to read and write .. and will want to improve themselves ..

Not sure what I want to see! though!! Cheers for now - looking forward to everyone's comments .. Hilary

  2. Mason - It is amazing isn't it how easily we can communicate now, and how quickly words travel. When I was young, you couldn't even make an international telephone call without effort. Now, it's milliseconds. And the Internet certainly didn't exist. In fact, not very long ago, I had the experience of having a Skype discussion with a colleague in Shanghai (I live in CA) where we were going over the same document. You couldn't do that even twenty years ago.

That easy communication makes it very easy to forget sometimes just how powerful words are....

  3. So true. I've had my share of bloggers email or say in the comments that my words moved them, encouraged them and even made them laugh. We both know there are those behind the scenes we never hear from. It's fascinating and wonderful.

I can't imagine that communication could be any faster than it is today, but I'm sure it will be.

  4. It's wild, isn't it? Not sure where it will go next. Being able to talk to someone on the other side of the world through Facetime, which is visual and free, is really amazing.

  5. The internet is indeed awesome! And with my chronic fatigue, it offers a wonderful opportunity to travel around the world in the most relaxed fashion :)

And I do think about who reads my words - so much that I added a flag counter to my blog recently to see where you all come from. It is fun to check who was there every morning.

  6. I think it's exciting the things we can do today but sometimes wish we were back in simple times. The world is a crazy place and goodness knows what it will be like in 40 years. Quite scary really.

  7. It really is amazing how connected the world can be. It gives me so much hope for the future. If we can get along so well online from so many different places, we've got to be able to translate that into the real world.

  8. Interesting post. I have actually thought about this. It is fun to check the stats every so often to see where people are from that check out my blog. It amazes me how many different countries have been represented. It really is awesome to think about that my words are being read in different countries of the world.

  9. I have often thought of the same questions but honestly can't come up with an answer.

Look how far we have come in less than 10 yrs. It is mind boggling.

I can't even begin to fathom what changes will happen in the next 10 years.
