Sunday Salon: July Audio Releases

It’s time once again for Sunday Salon where we take a break and share our thoughts on the books we’ve read.

This week I want to share some interesting audio releases. Whether riding in a car, washing dishes or doing yard work, time seems to go by quicker if I’m listening to an audio book.

Penguin Audio has a number of great releases coming out this month. Here’s a few of the audios that are in my TBLT (to be listened to) stack.
VERY BAD MEN (ISBN: 9780142429372) by Harry Dolan and read by Erik Davies.

Seventeen years ago a trio tried to pull of the perfect crime - the armed robbery of the Great Lakes Bank. The scheme went horribly wrong. A sheriff was paralyzed and all 3 young men went to prison.

Nearly 2 decades later the trio has served their time and are trying to put the crime behind them. However, their paths cross with Anthony Lark, a tormented loner obsessed with the robbery and bent on killing each of the trio. Lark writes a manuscript detailing his murders and announcing his next victim. This manuscript draws editor David Logan and police detective Elizabeth Warshkey into Lark’s twisted world. Meanwhile, there are men working behind the scenes to make sure that the secrets of the robbery remain buried at any and all cost.

This book is available in unabridged CDs, digital downloads and hardcover.
RULES OF CIVILITY (ISBN: 9780142429273) by Amor Towles and read by Rebecca Lowman.

This is a sophisticated and entertaining debut novel by Towles about an irresistible young woman with an uncommon sense of purpose.

The novel presents a fresh take on the classic American story of someone rising from humble immigrant beginnings to reach great heights. This time a strong woman, Katey Kontent, is at the center. The story also offers an indelible portrait of New York City just as the Depression was beginning to end. Katey finds herself in a glittering new world where she experiences first hand they poise secured by wealth and station, but also the aspirations, envy, disloyalty, and desires that reside just below the surface.

This book is available in unabridged CDs, digital downloads and hardcover.
A GOOD HARD LOOK (ISBN: 9781101494103) by Ann Napolitano and read by Debra Monk.

Set in Milledgeville, GA, in the early 1960s, the story examines what it means to live life to the fullest no matter what hand you’re dealt.

This book channels celebrated author Flannery O’Connor who, crippled by lupus at 25, was forced to leave New York City and return to her family farm, Andalusia, in Milledgeville. It also looks at the lives of several people as they chart their own courses in life. They are all forced to look at themselves and face Flannery’s observation that the truth doesn’t change according to one’s ability to stomach it.

This novel is available as an unabridged digital download and as a hardcover.
THE PARADISE PROPHECY (ISBN: 9781101500996) by Robert Browne and read by Scott Brick.

In this first installment of an apocalyptic new series, Browne’s novel tempts thriller readers and fantasy lovers alike. Part supernatural thriller, part hidden history, part action adventure, THE PARADISE PROPHECY is reminiscent of bestsellers like THE DA VINCI CODE.

The story begins with the knowledge that the War in Heaven has come to earth. Browne’s 2 misfit anti-heroes are about to find out how catastrophic the war can become.

This novel is available as an unabridged digital download and as a hardcover.
Also available in digital download are THE LAST LETTER FROM YOUR LOVER by Jojo Moyes and read by Susan Lyons, SAVAGE NATURE by Christine Feehan and read by Karen White, and SPELL BOUND by Kelley Armstrong and read by Johanna Parker (coming July 26).

  1. Mason - Thanks for sharing what's in your TBLT pile. You're quite right that time goes faster if you're listening to something. You've got quite a variety of books there, too, and I look forward to your reviews of them.

  2. Wow, these all sound good...too bad that I don't enjoy audio! I think I would consider listening on a car ride, but otherwise, I'm too impatient. I like the visual experience.

    Thanks for sharing....
