Guest Blogger: Kandy Siahaya

Please join me in welcoming author Kandy Siahaya as the special guest blogger here at Thoughts in Progress today as she makes a stop on her virtual book tour.

Kandy’s latest release is MAKING LIGHT OF BEING HEAVY.  Here’s a brief description of the book: “These days everyone has a society-driven mindset and totally forget to laugh, especially at themselves. This may be cliche but the author truly believes that laughter is the best medicine and thinks everybody should laugh every day. Period. Over the years as a person blessed with the fat gene, Kandy has been in many situations where if she could not find humor she probably would end up on the couch in the psychiatrist s office. This book is about as politically incorrect as it gets for such a subject but it is also based on reality. This is a reality that many women have just like Kandy but do not think they can (or should) at times just laugh about it. Her intention when she started writing this book was to hopefully give insight to many who could never relate but at the same time perhaps provide a different perspective to women just like her. It is a point of view that has given her the strength to live her life happily and project these feelings onto everyone she comes in contact with. She has a great sense of humor and a quick wit and guarantees you will be laughing (and thinking) with each chapter of MAKING LIGHT OF BEING HEAVY.

With a topic that most of us can relate to, Kandy joins us to talk about “dieting two weeks at a time…”

So according to an article on Lemondrop (Exactly How Long Can A Woman Actually Resist A Klondike Bar), the average woman can last 19 days on a diet before cheating. The article failed to mention which attempt at a diet this actually was….if it was the first attempt in a while then probably 19 days is just a tad bit exaggerated. Usually for me it will take a coupe of attempts before the diet will really stick at which point I usually try to do a two-week on and then a few days to a week off and then two-week on sort of routine so you actually see an end in sight which is easier to follow through with then a never-ending diet. The Scarsdale diet has always been a favorite of mine and works without a doubt the best. I detailed this diet in my book, MAKING LIGHT OF BEING HEAVY.

The article also mentions that the dieter will spend on average
$250 on dieting paraphernalia including workout clothes, exercise equipment, magazines, books, gym memberships, etc. prior to the begin of a diet three times a year. Again, not true for this professional dieter. My main focus when I am going to be starting a diet is what I am NOT going to be able to eat for two weeks at which point I will promptly indulge in exactly that.

For all of us who are professional dieters, we already have the books, the clothes, the equipment, and so on. Heck, we have had it for years and if these other women are spending $250 each time they start a diet then they are just plain crazy. As a professional dieter, my main goal is to get geared up for the diet letting myself know that I will not be missing a thing because I just ate it and, besides, two weeks is definitely doable. If I do happen to buy a new piece of exercise equipment it will be a new hula hoop for $3.99 at Wal-Mart because my current one has a kink in it!

Oh Kandy, these sound like diets I’ve been on before. Thanks so much for guest blogging here today and sharing your thoughts on dieting.

What are your thoughts on dieting? Do you have to buy new exercise equipment and workout clothes when you diet?

  2. Great point that laughter is such an important thing--not to take everything so seriously. Great idea for taking some of the stress out of weight loss!

  3. Mason - Thanks for hosting Kandy.

Kandy - Thanks for your wisdom about body image, weight loss and the need for laughter. Humour really is essential for sanity, and it's good to be reminded of that.

  4. I think lifestyle change wins over diet every time.

  5. I have tried to steer our family meals into being healthier without using the D word! Sometimes actually saying I want to diet just sets me up for failure, when really, I should be more cognizant of what I eat all the time!

  6. I know many people that suffer from constant dieting. My husband he's always looking for new ways to lose weight and will often drop lots of money on products.

  7. What I really like here is your attitude, I can sense you're smiling as you go through the diet process, keeping humor a part of it. Kudos to you!

  8. Humor is a must. I've done the Scarsdale Diet before, and it worked for me, too.

  9. We are buying an elliptical machine to plop in front of the TV for Christmas. The gym was an expense we could do without and you can buy a good used exercise machine for cheap on Craigslist.

  10. Oh my - I am so on the side of humor. It has gotten me through a wealth of bad stuff over the years.

Great post, and I thank you!

  11. What a great book. How people react to you definitely depends on body image but someone is always enticed by a smile or laughter. Speaking of laughter, I had a chuckle about the elliptical in front of the tv for Christmas. I had mine in front of the tv and moved it into the garage for the holidays - I probably need to move it back in front of the tv or maybe the kitchen - hmmm food for thought (excuse the pun)

  12. Kandy, I agree that laughter is the best medicine. I laugh a lot but even I tell myself sometimes that I'm taking things too seriously.

  13. Love Kandy's attitude. I love to laugh and I do like to eat. I'm bad about watching my diet. Sometimes I have attempted to go on a regimen, but it usually only lasts about a day until I start craving fast food. Then I satisfy my craving and postpone the diet plan until I can find a better one.

Good guest post and thanks to you Mason for introducing us to Kandy.

  14. I love that Kandy finds the humor in dieting. It is rather sad that there are so many fad diets out there as opposed to lifestyle changes and realistic eating books.
