Silence and noise

When you’re working in the house, yard or garden do you like to hear noise or do you like peace and quiet?

For me when I’m working in the house, 99.9% of the time I like to have a noise. Usually the TV is on or the radio or sometimes an audio book is playing. When I’m in the yard or the garden, there are times I like to listen to nature. But if I’m weed eating or mowing, nature doesn’t stand a chance. During those times I enjoy having my MP3 handy and listening to an audio book.

Somehow when I’m listening to an audio book the yard work doesn’t seem quite as bad nor take quite as long to do. The same is true for traveling. Listening to audio books helps relieve stress and is an added bonus when you’re stuck in traffic.

As writers do you want your books turned into audios, if they’re not already?

I’m always looking for new audios and thanks to Anna and the folks at the Hachette Audio Books I have several new titles to offer in a giveaway. I have three copies of each title. The giveaway is open to residents of U.S. and Canada only and no post office box addresses can be accepted per Hachette’s guidelines.

To enter the giveaway, send me an e-mail (mcbookshelf@gmail.com) with “Win and the book title” in the subject line. In the body of the e-mail be sure to include your name and mailing address. (Just so you know, I never share this information or use it for anything else.) The deadline to enter is 8 p.m. on Friday, June 4.

Here are the great new audio books:

  1. Mason - How funny that you would mention that. I often wonder whether or not I'm a better writer in silence or with noise. I think I prefer to write in silence. I focus better, and the reason is that I'm very attuned to music. If there's any music on, I pay far too much attention to it, and not enough to my writing.

Would I want my writing in audio form? Sure! People savor books in all formats - why not audio?

  2. I have to have a little noise...I think I've conditioned myself. Birds chirping at the feeders is usually enough, or some lyric-free music on the satellite TV...New Age or Classical. :)

  3. Mason, I need noise. Silence is too scary. :) I have the TV on sometimes when I'm not watching. Not good.

I love audio books. Now that's the right kind of noise.

  4. When I work, I like silence. I seem to be too easily distracted by TV or even music. When driving, I'd love an audio book since it would save me constantly switching radio stations to find something I could sing along with.

  5. When I'm writing, I prefer silence so that I focus on only the words. Sometimes, but not often, a little soft background music plays, but like Elizabeth says, lyric-free. And even then, it's only when I'm in a writing mode that isn't too challenging.

  6. Margot, the silence does help sometimes when I'm trying to write too, but I usually have noise somewhere. If a good song is playing I begin listening to it without realize it.

Elizabeth, I like the New Age and Classical too. I can't have anything with lyrics.

Teresa, audio books is the right kin of noise but then I have to stop and listen. With the TV playing in the background, I don't really care what they're saying. :)

Helen, I switch stations too much too that's why I listen to audio books.

Joanne, lyric-free music is the best. I find lyric-free music very relaxing.

  7. Noise in the house. And like you, depends on what I'm doing outside. If I'm relaxing or reading, I prefer quiet. Otherwise, noise. Preferable music outside, but I'm always up for audio books while doing housework. And of course I'd love my work turned into an audio book!

  8. Silence silence everywhere or I can't hear myself think, that's my policy. But I"d still love to win one of these books for my daughter who listens to audio books in the car. Also, they're great for long road trips. I love an audio book then.

  9. Mason, depends on my mood. I actually like the peace and quiet most of the time. Allows me time to think. There are times tho, I like music. TV in the background drives me NUTS. I will turn on tunes when I'm doing weedpulling or cleaning the Dane Pens.

Sometimes the music helps occupy one part of my brain allowing the other part to work out a problem.

Oh I saw Queen Latifah'a Put on Your Crown, last night in People Mag. It's all about self esteem too. How to tap into it. I'm wanting to get that one.

  10. I love background noise when I'm working outside or cleaning, but I need silence when I write. :-)

  11. I have to have absolute silence when I work. I also prefer silence when I'm cleaning, working in the yard, etc. I guess maybe it has something to do that I like the mindfulness aspect of focusing on one thing at a time.

Do I want my book on audio? I would love that! I think as writers, the more formats we can make our books available in, the better.

  12. It depends on what I'm doing, but I like it quiet when I'm doing something that I have to think about. When I'm doing something mindless, I do enjoy an audio book.

  13. I prefer silence to the TV, but I work well with music playing as well.

  14. I like noise too. Pure silence is a little disconcerting because it's so unusual. :)

I still haven't listened to an audio book - although I've got several in my classroom for my kids to listen to.

  15. When I'm doing housework I turn on the Rock 'N Rock. When I'm working in the yard, I'm like you, I love to listen to books on tape. Though when I'm writing it has to be quiet. Strange, I know, but I guess my muse is silence. :0)

  16. I like to have my dog whining by my side for attention. No, wait, I hate that. I'd like silence, just can't remember what it sounds like :-)
